whey protein added to diet

Quote  |  Reply

hi all,

after analyzing my diet, i am able to keep my calories at my target for the 1.5lbs/wk weight loss rate, however my diet appears to be mainly made up of carbs and fat is it ok to drink 100% whey protein drinks as part of my meals to get the recommened amount of protein each day?

Also i am severely lacking in some of my vitamins (VITAMIN A) and minerals, is a multivitamin supliment ok to take daily to correct this, i know it seems like a lazy way to get the nutrients i need but i have very little time to cook a meal that will meat my dietery requirements.

Supplements like whey protein powder/drinks and multi-vitamins are perfectly fine, but remember that they are supplements, not meant to be a main source.  Try to work out meals with more veggies or fruits that have vitamin A, and more foods with lean protein.  Good luck!

Hey Go to Sam's and Buy your whey. Go to Vitamin shop get a Males Multi and yow will be good.

Hey I posted this up for someone else: my advice is once a week, go buy healthy food, roast some veggies in the oven, broccoli, carrots, turnips, onions, asparagus, zucchini, peppers, place in containers in your fridge so you have it available. buy baby carrots and salsa to snack on, rice cakes, cottage cheese, go lean cereal, greek yogurts, cut up salad stuff so its easily available to you, bake some chicken or fish, or have some easily available proteins in the fridge, it will make CC ALOT easier (you get a lot of vitamins, veggies, calcium and low cals in like that) make some quinoa with spinach and store in container also (really healthy). having good food around helps you make good choices. Its also easy to have it already made in the fridge (if you eat left overs)

Try different brands of whey to find the one you like best and use it to boost your protein count. You can sometimes get individual packets to try. I found an unflavored one i like and add it to my coffee and yogurt. It turns my coffee into a 26 gram protein drink without changing the taste of the coffee. (I make up half a pot! I love coffee!)

I've been watching Net Carbs.  The best and only NO Carb protien drink I've found is Isopure Zero Carb.  The come in several flavors and actually taste good!  Also Quest Protien bars are also a great way cure hunger in between meals or after a workout.

Get some sweet potatoes. You can put one in the microwave (I use potato setting, not sure how many minutes) nuke till you can stick it. I use a lot of cinnamon, but you could use other spices nutmeg or even a little Stivea, It taste good, it only takes a couple minutes and you get loads of vit A and fiber and potassium. I am addicted to them.

I could not make it if I did not have my refrigerator full of good food cooked ahead, all ready for me just to put together, warm up and eat.  I always have cooked brown rice and black beans on hand, also cooked lentils, baked or curried chicken.  Oh yes, quinoa...and fish is always on hand in my freezer to steam mostly in a bed of vegies and served with brown rice.

Found a recipe online for a cereal that is now being prepared every few days in my kitchen... Six different grains, sauteed in a little butter, add water and salt and just let sit all night.  The next morning, check if it needs any more water, cook up for as long as necessary, usually a few minutes and enjoy.  I have a cup or so of this delicious breakfast every morning.

Of course, some people would call this good food prepared ahead "leftovers" :-)  Way to go, nothing like doing a little planning.

would you please share the link or recipe for the cereal?  Thanks

I use BlueBonnet Vanilla Whey Protein drink mix.  It only has 3 carbs per serving and is sugar free.  It tastes good and I purchase it on Amazon for about 1/3 what my health food store sells it.  I mix it with almond milk and add some strawberries.  Yum! Yum!  I also use it when I make my almond pie crusts.

thanks guys some excellent responses here, i will go and by some powder tomorow on my first day off work.

When I first started on CC I discovered my protein intake was super low also.  I now have a protein shake once or twice a day.

Definitely make your own.  You can toss in all kinds of goodness.  I have a variety of frozen fruits (no sugar added) that I toss into mine.  A cup of fresh spinach blended in adds half your RDA of Vitamin A and I can't even taste it under the chocolate.

I use Met-RX Ultimate whey protein powder (available at netrition.com)  It gives me the biggest protein bang for my calorie bucks.  It is also lower in sodium and carbs than many others.

Besides whey- try hemp, pea, rice and other protein sources- non  GMO, and aim for some"real" food protein sources- fish, temphe, and if you arent vegan leanest unprocessed organic buffalo, elk, chicken, egg whites, etc. I am a pescatarian and love fish and pea protein. A multivuitamin is fine, so long as it is a truly balanced one.

I love the Met-RX Amino 3000!! Great for quick recovery and simple way to add amino acids :)

Go to "101cookbooks.com" and click on "breakfasts/brunch", the recipe is under Toasted Four Grain Cereal.

The cereal combination that I am using now is different, because I added some more grains.

I usually make a batch at a time, which lasts me several days.

One Tablespoon unsalted butter    150 calories

1/4 cup each of the following grains:

Barley flakes      &nb sp;       80 calores

Quinoa flakes      &nb sp;     80

Old fashioned oatmeal   80

Steel cut oatmeal      &n bsp;   150

spelt      &nbs p;       & nbsp;      &nbs p;        147

farro      &nbs p;       & nbsp;      &nbs p;       & nbsp; 160

rye berries      &n bsp;        ;        142

Melt butter in a heavy large saucepan.  Add the grains/cereal and toast in the butter until it smells heavenly.  Add some salt to this.  Then pour some boiling water over it and let it boil for a minute or so, stirring well.  Turn off the heat and let it just sit all night.  In the morning, check if it needs any more water or salt, cook for a little while and serve.  This makes a total of 980 calories.  About six sevings at 165 calores per serving.  Not bad at all.

I usually serve it with either yogurt, soy milk or almond milk, a little apple juice, some fruit as blueberries, bananas, apple, and almonds or any nut you wish.

Enjoy,

ok so i found the perfect source of protein to add to my diet,

i will be drinking coconut water from now on, which luckily for me grows on trees here in the caribean even in my own back garden :),

it has 30 calories per 250ml, 23g of protein, 8g carbs plus lots of potassium which was another nutrient i was very low on,

i ended up drinking a little too much of the stuff today i replaced all my drinks with it as its actually very nice,

i drank 1.5l of it so i had a huge protein boost today.

btw this water is from green coconuts it is clear like water and very clean tasting not the white milk from the older brown coconuts.

I use coconut water to flavor my tap water.  Always looking for nutritious, good tasting ways to get my 8 glasses down. lol

i havent started tracking my water intake yet i have managed to get my calories right now so im working on my nutrients atm i don't want to be skinny and sick,

so water intake is next, i know i don't drink much water each day so i will be having to increase that although i guess it's a logical thing to do right now does the logged water have to be pure water or can i use some of the coconut water as this? i will only drink bottled water in this country i still do not trust tap water here.

Unsweetened, unsalted, decaf, non-dairy liquids count toward water as far as your body is concerned.

Water helps a lot to keep you feeling full and to flush the body daily.

Good strategy.  I increased my water first ... starting from zero. LOL I balanced my carbs proteins and fats next.  Then attacked nutrients one at a time.

If you're going over too too much on protein, you can flavor your bottled water with the coconut water.  I bet you could even use it as some of the liquid in cooking. :)

I've been thinking about coconut water all day. LOL  My box boasts no protein at all.

So, I'm not sure about the protein.  From what I can find, coconut water only has 1.7g to 2g protein in 1 cup. 46 calories per cup.  That is the liquid part of the coconut.

Not sure where you got your numbers, but I'd like to see them.

Not All Processed Foods Are Created Equal
Fact: a diet containing whole, fresh fruits and vegetables is one of the best for a healthy mind and body. Although true, it can be hard to keep food fresh at home for longer periods of time, and if you have no time to shop every few days, boxed and canned foods become appealing. We often hear about heavily processed frozen dinners and processed foods worth avoiding, but there are minimally processed foods that do pack a lot of nutrition and may be worth having in the fridge or cupboard.
