Battle of the Gut.

Quote  |  Reply

I'm 15 years old. I'm approximately 5'5 and I weigh 107 pounds. I understand I am not overweight but I feel as though I need to loose a few pounds. I'd like to weigh 100-101. People say I'm small but I feel as though my stomach is extremely noticeable. I run almost everyday (5-7 miles) and I eat healthy for the most part. These past few months, however, I've had quite a few binging episodes and I can't seem to loose any weight. I'd really like to have a body that I am proud of and comfortable in my own skin.

Does anyone have a few weight loss tips to share? Anything is appreciated(:

Hey! I'm 5"9 and 118 pounds. I'm also very thin but I have a problem with my stomach too. So i get it! But you shouldn't be focused on losing weight because if you want a toned tummy you have to lose a lot of body fat (which it sounds like you have already done) and gain some ab muscles, and since muscles weigh more than fat, you could gain weight, but have a nicer body! Also, if you aren't getting your reccomended and nutricious calories, your body goes into starvation mode (even if it doesn't seem like it, trust me) and it holds onto the food that you do eat, especially in binging episodes. You could be the skinniest girl with the flabbiest tummy! (That's totally what I'm going through) so keep your calories in a good range, find some fun workouts to so, and treat yourself every once in a while but only in moderation :) Hope this helped! Good luck gorgeous

I've been feeling extremely self-conscious lately. I'm going to try to focus more on loosing body fat than my essential body weight, though, I think I'll feel better mentally weighing seven pounds less. Thank you for your encouraging words and advice.(:

Losing weight is not sustainable for you in the long run.  You're young, so for now it's fine if your BMI is low, but as you get older, you will need to gain weight so you are not underweight.

That's true at 107, so dropping to 100-101 is ill-advised.  If you want to change your physique, you would be better off focusing on body recomposition.  Stay active, lift heavy weights, run, do a sport, and eat, a lot.

You're only 107 lbs. There is no way that you could have a big stomach. Sure, it might be "squishier" than the toned 6-pack abs you see on TV, but guess what? Losing weight will only make your stomach look softer!

When I lost too much weight due to an eating disorder (which stemmed from poor and distorted body image like yours) I reached your goal weight. All of my muscles were gone. I looked skinny, bony, and my stomach actually looked bigger than it does now (I am still gaining weight but at a bmi of around 19), because being skinny implies a bit of bloating and makes your stomach look big in contrast with your hip and rib bones.

If you want your stomach to look more toned:

  • Eat more. That way you actually CAN get a toned stomach. Don't get obsessed over macronutrients and balancing everything. I gained weight eating healthful food along with regular servings of cookies, ice cream, fatty beef, and white bread and haven't noticed any change in my flabbiness. :P
  • Exercise, but reduce the cardio and focus on strength.

Contrary to what many people on this site think, to get muscle definition you don't need to lift like a beast. I've recently taken up Vinyasa yoga (yoga where you flow from one move to the other continuously) and have noticed that my arms and core are beginning to look lean and defined. Take a look at yoga- I love it!

Bottom line is...don't lose weight and stop worrying!

You don't need to loose weight, you are growing and developing still.

I am 5'2 and weigh a few pounds more than you and I have muscular legs from running (seriously...dont run everyday, your body will thank you) and t-rex arms (i guess I know where all my weight is lol).  I also have a pretty flat stomach but that also turns into a gut every so often, and by every so often I mean by the end of the day haha. Lift some weights, do some yoga, eat more protein and dont restrict your fat and love your carbs and you will be ok ;)

And trust me you do not need to drop 7 pounds, I went that route once and dropped my BMI down to 14, I looked like a nazi concentration camp prisoner and my stomach would bloat real bad because it couldnt handle food normally.

^This. I also used to have an ED, mainly because my stomach was so unflat, so I ended up going all the way down to an unhealthy BMI. Finally, my stomach became close to flat, but I looked gross. My lower stomach was then covered in a pouch of loose skin because of the drastic weight loss, and I was bloated all the time due to being so thin and malnourished, so it actually looked bigger than ever in proportion to my body. And because I had focused so much on my stomach, I ignored the rest of my body, which had gone skeletal. My upper arms were about as skinny as my forearms, which were hardly any thicker than my wrists, my boobs just turned into these disgusting empty bags of loose skin, you could see ribs protruding from my chest and sides, my legs were like 2 long twigs, and I faced a lot of crazy health issues: I lost my period, I'd get spasms in my legs, I'd get so cold that my lips would turn blue and I'd feel like I'd pass even in warm weather, my cuts and bruises wouldn't heal, and I temporarily stunted my growth.

I'm pretty sure you don't want to go through all of that. You're already quite thin, and if you're like me and you tend to store a lot of fat in the lower belly, it's going to be very hard work if you ever want to get it flat, but if you build some muscle through some strength training, it'll look a lot stronger and more defined. You don't necesserily have to lifts heavy weights, but doing yoga, pilates, martial arts, kickboxing, or just some calistenichs at home will do the trick. Cut back on the running though, because it just burns a lot of calories and builds very little muscle(it actually BURNS muscle, which is why long-distance runners are so thin and lanky)

So anyway, just eat at least 2500 cals a day(depending on your activity level, you could need a little more), cut back on the running, and subsitute it for some strength training. You don't need to lose any weight :)

Thank you everyone for the support. I've experiencing kinda of a rough patch and I really appreciate all of you're advice and kind words.

I have the exact same problem! I have a strong core from rowing, but I can't seem to slim down my tummy. I think its because of the all the carbs I eat, I'm trying to cut down on them but its difficult. I'll see how it goes. Do you drink enough water?

I'm afraid I don't drink enough. That's one of my biggest problems. I'm trying to drink more water each day but sometimes it doesn't work that way.

Allergy Remedies
Is It Possible to Go Natural?
The side effects of allergy medications keep some people from using them. Natural remedies can be a great alternative, but some are more effective than others.
