Determining your Activity Level

Quote  |  Reply

I have read so many different things that determine your activity level just wondering what one's do you go by as being a teenager like they say on the usda and other things that Sedentary - a lifestyle that includes activity that is only associated with day-to-day life. Moderately active - a lifestyle that includes physical activity equal to walking between 1.5 and 3 miles per day at 3 to 4 mph a day . Active - a lifestyle that includes physical activity equal to walking more than 3 miles per day at 3 to 4mph a day?

So is this a good thing to go by as like walking that amount doesn't really seem to burn many calories but they are still saying you need this to maintain your weight as a teen so is this a good thing to go by or does anyone else go by something more accurate or different?

For starters, I'd ignore whatever this site recommends if you're under the age of 21 - Teens need/burn more calories due to growth, in height, muscle, bone and organs. So, try other calculators that takes that into account, such as this one.

Or, you could base it on the walking thing/ if you do sports or not.

Yeah i understand that this site i should ignore same with most sites as they are based for adults etc over 21's, but i am trying to work out how much i really need so i can look to gaining weight from recovery in anorexia and i know that they say 3000 is needed for teen but i am just interested to see what my daily living tasks really burns and if i go by that walking thing i feel like its over estimating how much i really do however im not to sure how i would log in the information on your calculator you have given me.

I get up after a 7.30 to 8 hour sleep usually from 0.00am to 7.40-8am

Get ready for work which involves rushing around brushing teeth, shower, putting clothes on etc, ready by 8.45am

Then i walk to work at around 9am takes roughly 30 to 40 minutes so get work at 9.40 i walk roughly 3.5mph to 4mph start work 10am

Then i walk another mile once at work to collect sandwiches another 15 minutes to 20 minutes walking at roughly 3.5mph

then i have a 6 hour shift at work, working in retail/waitering, includes a 15 minute break

Shift finishes at 4

Get the Bus home home arrive at home around 4.30pm, Have a shower do general things etc

Have Tea around 5.30pm then from 6pm to roughly 12pm i just chill and do general things a 16 year old does

I also play cricket every saturday but the above is what i generally do most days 5 days of the week so could you possibly log that in a see what target you get for i am also recovering from anorexia 175cm 16 years old and 44.5kg working with a E/D Team to build back up to a healthier weight, and the reason why i want to know this, isn't because im obsessing over calories just generally interested to see how much i really do and will look to cut out some of the things if its stalling recovery

Waiting looks like a fairly active work day to me. I wouldn't say it's sedentary since you're on your feet so much.

The settings on this site have descriptions. Have you read them? Are you using this site's counter? It's pretty good...

This site's counter isn't good for users under the age of 21, because it doesn't take growth into account. It also isn't good for determining ED recovery amounts, which vary immensely by individuals. (Both prior statements are paraphrasing mods on the site)

I am no expert in ED recovery, so I'm not exactly sure how much you should eat/cut back from exercise etc.
