I want to gain weight

Quote  |  Reply

Hey all

I'm a 15 year old with a BMI of 17.3 (50 kg 170 cm, 112 lbs 5'8"), and I need to gain some weight.

I've decided that I want to get on a diet to reach a goal of 127 lbs (healthy BMI), then after I reach that, considering I will still be getting taller, another set goal, but I'm overwhelmed as to how to get started on this, as most of the help seems to be going towards losing weight.

Can you guys give me some help?

Thanks in advance

Eat more.

Eat more and work out less. That's the best and quickest way. Just make sure you're  getting you're nutrition as well, and try and eat a wide variety. Try and eat healthy foods that are high in calorie, like whole milk and nuts. Use condiments and dressings too, those always add an extra 50-100 calories by the end of the day. You're probably going to need AT LEAST 2500 calories to put on some weight.

(Edit) - The best, healthiest way to put on weight is to weight lift and put on muscle, but this is so different than just putting on a bit of fat weight and it takes longer. And I don't know if you want to get buff or not, lol.

Like soccerislove05 said, eating 2500 calories a day is imperative.  Try and eat this amount as healthily as possible - 2500 calories of mcdonalds will not have the same effect as 2500 cals of healthy, good foods.

Also, don't aim to gain too much too quickly - like with weight loss, you should be aiming for a change of no more than 1-2lbs a week. I would say eat 3000 and do weights/cardio, so that all of the weight you gain isn't just fat - you should want to gain muscle.

You're looking to gain 15lbs, right? Thats not too much weight, and you're not 15% underweight, so you can afford to gain it quite slowly. So aim to gain 5lbs a month max, and you should be good to go.

Ooooo, also! Try the Health and Support thread, there are lots of people working on gaining weight there, generally these are people recovering from ED's and so wont have all the information that you want, but there will be threads on healthy calorie dense foods :)

And don't worry if you are active, thats still allowed! You don't have to become a big slob, just make sure your keeping and eye on eating, maybe set youself "snack times" as well as meal times, good luck sweetie!

xxxxxx

BMI are usually not accurate, so using some protein would help you gain lean muscle mass. I would suggest some weight gainer but females are not too big on supplements. milk shakes like the gentlemen said above would help too, adding protein is a good addition.
check out the weight gain forum.
