Found out i was pregnant friday. Can i still diet?
I'm about 40+ lbs over weight. I have been steady at 180 lbs for about a year. Last week i gained about 9 lbs doing nothing different. I havent been dieting and i know that is my problem.
I found out that i was pregnant on Friday. Just one day late.
I'm not looking lose much weight. I want to just get back down to the 180. Is it safe to do durning pregnancy? I'm not going to starve myself. I want to count my calories and eat about 1650 - 1700 a day.
I am taking prenatal vitamins as well
Consult your OB/midwife and ask if it would be alright to try to stay around the same weight, since you're overweight. I believe you need to add about 500 calories for pregnancy. If you stay at the same weight while your baby grows, you'll be losing while your baby's gaining. :)

It's not okay to diet during pregnancy. Since you are overweight, your gain will just need to be less than that of someone who was at a normal weight when starting her pregnancy. Have you had your first appointment yet? Probably not since you just found out... be sure to bring it up with your doctor so you have a guideline. Until then, eat at your maintenance level... you shouldn't need to increase your calories until the second trimester, approximately 300 extra. Try to take in healthy calories. Remain active if you can.
Congrats!
Don't you think that is best answered by your doctor/obgyn rather than on a public forum?
She just found out about her pregnancy. The doctor normally doesn't see you until you're at least 6 weeks along so she's simply scoping out opinions prior to.
I'm tired of outsiders putting in their rude little comments like this.
[throwing in a bit of wit lol]
as a friend said " I didn't plan to diet but i was stuck wt my head in the toilet bowl anyway"
she sounded so cute but i know it wasn't cute at all. i dread being sick :(
no, i'm not pregnant but i'm looking into the possibility to start TTC. i had a long talk wt friend of my age and i also brought the discussion wt hubby. we are still in the "analyzing" opportunities thing but...who knows? :)

It nevers hurts to get others opinions and to do your own research. This will provide her with more to discuss with her doctor.
Not to mention the fact that most of the women on the Pregnancy & Parenting forum have already had children or are currently pregnant and have a lot of great advice and personal experiences to share as well as various topics that they have already discussed with their doctors. The more knowledge the better.
Wrendora ~ Ultimately it is up to your doctor as to how she wants to approach it. Most (if not all) doctors will advise against weight loss during pregnancy.
Nine pounds may sound like a lot right now but in the grand scheme of things, the most important thing right now is that precious baby growing inside of you. Take care of yourself and try to eat at least your maintenance calories during the first trimester.
Congratulations! Babies are such a wonderful gift. And their nutrition should be the most important thing.
Please don't try and diet...discuss your weight concerns when you first sit down with your doctor. You'll probably find that flgirl said it the best - it's not ok to diet during pregnancy and that the only important thing is your growing baby.
Eating healthy food (carbs, milk, protein, veggies, fruit and healthy fats like olive oil) is going to help your developing embryo grow strong and healthy - and they are all vital to that development.
You can choose to avoid sweets/fried foods (many use pregnancy as an excuse to indulge in those) because they don't benefit the baby and will encourage unnecessary weight gain. So, skip the McDonalds and the Ben & Jerry's, but otherwise, eat your meals and healthy snacks.
If possible, take at least a 30 minute walk each day (if you are physically able without stress) until you see your doctor (or bump up your current activity by 30 minutes a day). Exercise is good for you and recommended while pregnant - just use common sense...again, your doctor is the best person to let you know if it's ok to keep doing back handsprings while pregnant!
Keeping up with a food and activity diary is a really good idea though, and this site is fabulous for that. Especially if you end up with blood pressure or sugar issues during your pregnancy - knowing what foods you've been eating will help your doctor out.
My little will be 8 months, and I'm starting to work on losing my baby weight now. I've been nursing, so I've had to keep my diet on the richer side also, but now that she's eating solids I can work a little harder on it. You can focus on really losing weight after the baby comes!!
Again, congratulations and best wishes and good luck with the fun to come. And may you have a happy baby who likes to sleep thru the night!

I am also over weight probably about 40lbs. I am 10 weeks pregnant, #3 for me. This time around I am eating healthier and excercising. I wouldn't say diet while pregnant, maintain is much better. Don't go over board worrying about every little pound because you will stress yourself out. You do need to enjoy being pregnant. Make healthy food choices like more fruits and veggies, lots of water and limit your salt. You may be retaining water which happens a lot during pregnancy. Keep active with walking or strolling, if you feel up to it there are excercixe programs for pregnant women at all stages. Hang in there for a couple of weeks till you see your doc and then he/she will give you a few suggestions.

I just found out i was pregnant Thursday. Also was working on lossing weight. So i go to the doctors in 2 weeks and will ask about this. If you follow exercise like you should while pregnant and food while pregnant and loss weight you should be ok? Cause most of my over weight is emotional eating. So working on getting passed that emotional crap and having a good pregnancy.
I am in my 17th week of pregnancy and I too have lots of concerns about weight gain. I would not worry about those nine pounds. I, like most women lost weight my first trimester due to morning sickness. The most important thing to remeber is to have a healthy baby. Make sure you get enough healthy calories. Eat lots of fresh salads, friut and protein.

Figure out what type of eater you are and you might just find the answer to permanent weight loss.
