Four pounds lost in five days.....too much?

Quote  |  Reply

I've been on the cc plan since last Wednesday, and I got on the scale this morning and am already down four pounds.

(I'm 30 years old.  I started at 149.8 pounds at 5'6", and now at 145.8lbs. - am looking to get down to 130lbs.)

I'm eating anywhere from 1250-1650cal/day (1250 yesterday, and only that little because I really wasn't hungry after that, which by the way is very rare for me).  I adjust it in that range depending on how hungry I am that day and on my activity level.  I usually work out for 30 minutes/day high intensity - either combo of weights and cardio or walking/running combo of just cardio, alternating each day.  I lost in the past (about 7 years ago) and got down to 130, but it was in a very unhealthy way.  I want to be at that size again, but doing it now in a healthy way.  I'm just concerned that even when eating 1650/day, I'm losing this rapidly.

Just because you're probably wondering, here's my typical day of food intake:

B-Fast: 2 egg whites, 1 egg, 1/4 cup broccoli, green onion, cherry tomatoes (5), 1/4 cup mushrooms, 2 oz. boars head turkey, 1 light string cheese - all scrambled together

Lunch: Big salad (about 4 cups total) of romaine, cherry tomatoes, bell pepper, mushrooms, cucumber, carrots, about 3oz. lean chicken breast, and 2 T Newman's Own lighten up dressing

Snacks (between B-fast and L, and L and D): 1/2 cup garbanzo beans; 1 apple; 1 light yoplait yogurt

Dinner: 1/3 Nature's Own honey wheat bagel, 1 T light mayo, 1tsp. mustard, 1.5 oz each of lean ham and chicken breast, romaine lettuce, tomato, bell pepper, cucumber - all on an open face sandwich....desert: 1 mini snickerdoodle and 1 cup1% milk.

Maybe my metabolism is just really fast when I feed myself well, or maybe I really was just eating that bad or that many more calories before cc.  I feel this is a very wholesome daily intake, but would be happy to get any comments.  I'm thinking if I keep losing at this rate, I'll need to up my daily calorie intake.  In the past when I lost so fast, I stopped having my period, and I know in the next 6 months or so my husband and I would like to start trying to get pregnant, so my health is of optimal concern to me at this point.

Anyway, yea!! on the loss (does make me very happy b/c up to this point I haven't seen anything below 147 on the scale) but also mild concern on the quick loss.  It does help motivate me to keep going when I see success.

There's often an initial weight-loss which is more rapid than the norm.  Usually more pronounced in people who are overweight or have a very poor diet.   You're starting at a healthy weight, of course.  Weight changes all the time so don't make a decision until you see the results after 1 week.  Week 2 it's pretty common to lose nothing so things can average out.

I would suggest that if you're particularly active you should aim not to go below 1500 on any day.   It's better to go gently, start a little too high and trim back than to start too low end up 'crash dieting' and making life difficult for yourself.

Thanks, that's very helpful.  It's hard to pull in the reins sometimes, but I know I need to do just that this time.  Any loss is good loss and progress at that, so it's good to remember it's better to take it slow for lasting health and success than go to extremes and end up forefiting it all.  Thanks for the insight.

The thing is, when the weight loss levels off don't get discouraged.  So many of us have this great initial weight loss then it settles down to .5 to 1 pound a week and we wonder why we aren't losing faster, because we did at first.

So once you're past the initial drop, keep on with what you're doing and remember that when you lose it slow it stays off.  Your menu looks good!

Your weight fluctuates a few pounds a day. I get confused on here when people get upset about gaining a pound- it could be that you need to go to the bathroom or something! Chances are, you lost weight, but don't worry too much about it being extreme weight loss as long as you're not starving yourself or overexercising.

You're doing fine!  I'd worry too if that much came off in the beginning for me but it will level out...everyone loses differently and as long as you keep doing what you are that goal will get here.  Keep up the good work!

Thanks for your input ladyduece - it's encouraging.  I'm sure it will start to level out too.  It does help to have a jump start though and feel encouraged to keep going.  It has taken a TON more time to prepare my  meals and plan everything out, but I've started to think of that time as "me" time- time that will help me feel and look better, and just get in the habit of working it into my schedule.  I'm sure as time goes on, I'll get better at streamlining the prep work and get a good system going.  It's so much "easier" to just grab something processed and lacking in nutrition and be on my way, but "easy" doesn't produce results.  You only get out of something what you put into it, right?  Smile

A large portion of it is likely just water variation.

As long as you're eating enough you likely have no issues.  Don't be shocked if you see it go up 2 pounds tomorrow :P

Remember, it's important to keep your eye on the trend line not the individual weights.

Shadox is absolutely correct.

I've developed a problem with dry mouth (possibly related to being prediabetic), which has led to consuming too much water.  I'm getting better at merely sipping water (I've actually gotten fond of Perrier) rather than gulping it, but currently my weight can fluctuate from about 226 loaded with water (say 5pm) and 222 upon waking up in the morning.

When I was in much better shape (around 170) and doing a lot of outdoor work/exercise in summer heat, weight gain and loss from hydration was probably similar.

Just as an update and/or info on my post, with regard to hydration.  I do have about 8 glasses of water per day, at least.  It seemed like there might be confusion about possible dehydration with regard to my post.

Congrats on your weight loss. I agree with the others that most see an initial weight loss that seems pretty dramatic to some.

It will probably level off, even plateau. However, if you stay the course and keep doing the right things for your body, the long time trend line will reflect that. I look at my entire graph since the beginning of the year if I get discouraged.

I started at 160, lost down to 147 but am back up to 153. However, rather than say OH NO I gained, I just say Great, I am down 7 pounds since January.

I exercise heavily and actually wear the same clothes I did when I was fifteen pounds thinner. Watch the mirror as much as the scale.

Stay the course.

Sue..
