French Toast, Could it be healthy?
So I was bored the other day and I was off craving random foods cause I can lol. Then I remembered about french toast and then started thinking of what it was made out of. Is French Toast Really that bad? Lets say its made from eggs, whole wheat bread, A little Bit of Cinnamon, and some sugar free syrup to go along with it. If you really think about it, its not that bad of a healthy breakfast. You get protein from the eggs, a good sorce of carbs from the bread, and even cinnamon is known to have health benefits. But who knows maybe I am fooling my self xD What do you guys think?
Choose your bread wisely, limit your toppings to cinnamon and berries....don't fry it in butter.
You're right. It's not that bad if you make it yourself and you are using the ingredients you mentioned.
It becomes bad when you use loads of butter, drown it in syrup, and have 4 slices with a side of sausage links ![]()
Perfectly fine if:
a) You only have one or two
b) You work it into your daily calories
c) You don't slather it in butter/syrup
I'm kinda craving some now...
now i know what i'm making for my breakfast tomorrow .... !!
My french toast is the following:
- 6 slices of D'Italiano 40-calorie a slice bread 240 calories
- 5 egg whites 80 calories
- 1/4th cup of skim milk 20 calories
- 1 tb EVOO (not really needed, but I think EVOO is a good food in moderation) 120 calories
- 2 tbs. real maple syrup (in moderation--a very healthy food) 100 calories
- I use no butter or margarine--and don't miss it
Total for a great breakfast to get me revved up for the entire day = 560 calories (the EVOO is not a necessity and no-sugar syrup could be used--and 4 slices of bread could be enough)
Total calories could be as low as 360 or so.
pilgrimdude ... what is EVOO ?? X
Thanks for the replys everyone :D I think I might have this soon.

Extra Virgin Olive Oil
ha ha ha ha!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i thought it was some fancy american condiment i didn't know about. olive oil i can definately get hold of!!!!
and darkbeam- i would cook it for tea but i am off out to a friends for tea tonight ... my next meal i actually cook will be my breakfast!! hense the breakfast thing. and i have maple syrup in the cupboard all ready and waiting!!!
question though- is it the smae using whole eggs, or are whites just better??
X
I don't use whole eggs simply because a whole egg is 70 calories and an egg white is 16 calories. Both give a lot of protein. I am not so sure most of us even need to worry about eatign egg yolks, but since I do watch calories, I don't eat them. In any case, others might disagree, but I have not for one iota missed yolks in my omelets and french toast. But some people miss the color and taste of egg yolks in their cooking.
didn't realise about the difference in calories, but i suppose it makes total sense, the middle being where all the goodness is.
will test it out tomorrow and see how i get on :o)
Oh, and an egg yolk is terrible high in food cholesterol, so some doctors recommend only eating an egg or two a week. Other people think not eating egg yolk is a bunch of hogwash, but since I am not afraid of hogwash, I do not eat egg yolks. If it were turkeywash, I might be concerned.
What about chickenwash?
On the egg topic, an egg white has less calories than a whole egg - but the difference shrinks (though doesn't go away) when you recognize that you need to use more egg whites than you would eggs. Personally, I find eggwhites alone taste really salty so I either use whole eggs or a whole egg supplemented with eggwhites. The yolk is packed full of nutrients as well as healthy fats so it's certainly not bad for you. But, hey, if you prefer the taste of just eggwhites, that's not bad for you either.
The best part of changing my lifestyle. Is finding alternatives to high calorie favourites and changing recipes around to make them lower cal more healthy!
Its super fun and super easy. Almost anything can be lower cal!!!! Check out hungrygirl for tons of alternative recipes
I'm afraid of chickenwash.
I agree with all your points, except I don't find them salty. However, since I use granulated garlic and black pepper to season everything except my sunblock, I really haven't thought about that.
I agree that one needs more egg whites--but I like that I can use 4-5 egg whites in place of one egg and get a lot more content. There is 215 mg of cholesterol in one large egg and 0 mg. in 6 egg whites from large eggs. However, more and more I am reading that some doctors argue that food cholesterol DOES NOT turn into blood cholesterol. The liver is in charge of that? But I do know that since I watch my calorie intake almost as carefully as I watch NCAA division 1 college football, I don't eat egg yolks.
I'm afried of chickenwash
I make a healthy single serving of french toast. This yields 3 pieces........
3 pieces of light wheat bread (35 cal a slice)
1 egg white
1/4 cup unsweetened vanilla almond breeze
Cinnamon
Mix egg white, almond breeze and cinnamon in a bowl til combined. Dip bread pieces into batter 1 by 1. Then fry on a pan using cooking spray or light butter. Top wil 1/4 cup sugar free syrup, fresh fruit or whatever you want!
But then again to each his own. I will continue to use whole eggs and always have them in groups of two.
i had it for breakfast the other day!
cooking spray
2 slices of bread - 130
1 egg - 75
1/8 cup sugar-free maple syrup (tastes surprisingly good) - 20
banana - 90
yummy breakfast for a total of 315 :)
