Frequent Sore Throats, Nausea, Celiac Disease? IBS?
I have a history of frequent severe sore throats. Even though it looks exactly like Strep, not one of my 8+ cultures have come up as positive. I have another pretty bad sore throat right now.
For the last few months I seem to be having more and more problems with my stomach. I get this sort of nausea, which feels more like a motion sickness than anything else and sometimes I feel really bloated. My doctor seems to have tried every test, Thyroid, Glucose tolerance, etc. I've given multiple blood, urine and stool samples. I've even gone through an upper GI to determine if I possibly had Acid-Reflux. Every test has come back NORMAL.
I've tried playing around with my diet a little bit, including what one should do for IBS. I seriously cut down on the insoluble fibers and upped my soluble fibers. (Also cutting down on wheat) I found out I've lost about 10 pounds in a month or so just from being afraid to eat certain things and not knowing what to eat.
I went to a specialist and he's given me Phenergan for the nausea. He's also talking about possibly testing for Celiac. Has anybody had any similar symptoms? Does this sound like Celiac? IBS? something else??
You shouldn't up one kind of fibre and lower another. Soluble and insoluble work together. Insoluble fibre works to move bulk and increases water in the stool while soluble creates the bulk itself, as well as lending itself to forming gel that binds nasties in the gut to your stool.
Ask about lactose intolerance before you are tested for Coeliac. I have IBS-C, for which I eat high fibre per my GP's sayso, and am lactose intolerant. What you are describing of your symptoms sounds like what I was going through before I was diagnosed lactose intolerant.
I would not cut out anything unless your doctor tells you to. That is exactly what helped on starting me down the road of an eating disorder. Instead of going to get help I questioned myself and started cutting foods out one at a time, resulting in loss I did not need (I was 6'1 and 145). While my low self-esteem then came into play (too many compliments on my weight loss set me on a bad route), if I had just gone and spoken to my GP I could have avoided so much. Bring up lactose intolerance at your next appointment and keep eating wheat and dairy for the meantime. If you cut out wheat and gluten and then get tested for coeliac you can get a negative result just because there is none in your diet as of late.
As for the sore throat, I have no idea. Sorry!
I can relate! And it was glandular fever ( a mild case so never diagnosed as that- but subsequently have the antibodies)...and that can take months to recover fully....AND i think it resulted in a sensitive stomach ( trully mucked around immune system)....
So ive had plenty of tests too.... nothing. so the diagnosis is IBS (by exclusion of everything else)... Just make sure you rest when ur body asks for time out and keeping a food diary will help u identify trigger foods for the sore stomach.
for me personally= raw onion, garlic and apples (okay if cooked and in small quantity).... and artificial sweeteners.
its not fun huh,
best wishes :)
