Freshman Fifteen~For College Students and Anyone Else Who Would Like To Join!

Quote  |  Reply

Hey! I'm Kristina and I just finished my first semester at college. Throughout high school I was able to stay pretty much around the same weight, due to myself being very active, playing sports year round. Throughout this past summer and beginning of the school year, I gained the freshman fifteen. So I am going to try and start a group of other college students who experience the same struggles as me, to try and motivate ourselves to exercise more, eat healthier, lose weight and then maintain our healthy weight.

So you can start with your stats and hopefully we can all track our progress together throughout 2009!

Age: 18

Height: 5'7"

Starting Weight: 155

Current Weight:151

Goal Weight: 130

Exercise: About 5 days a week, do ab workouts everyday

I'm looking forward to meeting some new people in the same boat as I am!

I was totally in the same boat. I'm in college, my senior year and i've seen my weight osolate like no other. My freshman year i went in weighing 175lbs and in good shape. I ended up putting on 10lbs by the end of that year. All throughout my college life my weight has gone up and down all over the place.

About a year ago from now i was at my heaviest weight of 220lbs and thats when i started watching my weight again. I love college but as you go on throughout, the harder the classes get and the less free time a person has to work out, that's what usually gets me. I can have a nice workout schedule for a month but then i'll get overwhelmed with school work, exams, research projects and my workout time goes away.

Age: 21

Height: 5'7

Current Weight: 195

Goal Weight: 175-180

Exercise: I attempt to work out a min of 3 days a week, when time provides 5 days. Mostly run and bike machines.

Thanks Hunter4570 for posting! I know how you feel with the whole exam and stress contributing to weight gain and less workout time. Especially when its right around the holidays! Hopefully we can achieve our goal weghts this new year!

Sure thing, we will do it!

hey there,

My name is melissa,

I havent exactly gained the freshman fifteen...I have stayed around the same weight through highschool because of dancing and moderate work outs. I lost about 15 lbs over the summer before starting school and have gained 5 back since september. I am just not quite happy with the way i look though and am trying to loose about 20~

looking forward to talking to those in the same situation!

~melissa

height: 5'10"

starting weight: 165

Current weight: 158

Goal weight: 140... eventually mid 130's

exercise: 4-5 times a week on an elyptical

oh PS: how many calories a day do u guys aim for... I usually try to stay between 1200-1400

You need 1500 if you're female, 1800 if you're male.  Unless you're a genderless space alien, you need to eat more (especially in college, when you're burning natural calories like crazy).

Hey melissa

Thanks for joining :)

and little beep, I calculated my calorie intake per day on this website using the calorie target and I was calculated at about 1300, for a healthy weight loss of 20 pounds by about the summer

I usually eat around 1200 (my sedentary-lazy days) - 1500 on days I exercise more. I eat as healthy and well rounded as possible, and some form of exercise light or heavy daily.

Yeah ive read a few places that its like a minimum of 1150ish calories for a female in a day and 1500 for a male in a day. Im sure there is some give or take to that for many reasons.

If im not working out i try to keep it around 1600, my sedentary days. When i work out a lot im usually around 1900. Seeing how im a male, might not exactly apply for ya.

also, for a little more chatting heres a few more Q's for us.

What time of day do you prefer to work out? morning, afternoon etc...

When you work out, what's the target you shoot for? working out for X amount of minutes, or working out to a certain distance, or calories?

Where are we from? More so information for like elevation and whatnot.

I prefer working out in the mid afternoon, usually around 2-3pm. I really can't do anything physical early early in the mornings, that makes me feel sick.

I usually set a target of around 350 calories when i work out not including my warm up or warm down. some days i'll go more, others less, depends how tired i am :)

I'm from Colorado, mile high in elevation. I just wanted to point out elevation since a person's body gets a little more demanding as elevation increases.

some times i do two work outs if i have the time

1. around 3:00 of about 300 cals on the elyptical and one at about 8:00 for 200 cals

i like to do both cuz those are my boredom times ... so it keeps me from snacking.

I am from wisconsin.. no clue about the elevation! haha Undecided

What time of day do you prefer to work out? i can never wake up in the morning so usually afternoon/early night

When you work out, what's the target you shoot for? when im running i usually do a certain distance, but i also look at the calories

Where are we from? im from so fla so were almost below sea level :p

hey everyone

Im like Frosh, in that, i have not gained the freshman fifteen but I am trying to lose a little an tone alot! I am a junior in college and I am suffering from bcss(broke college student syndrome) so I have to be really creative with eating healthy. I use the gym at my school and also run throughout the campus. Hopefully this will encourage me to put more effort into getting a really solid workout and eating routine.

height: 5'5"

current weight: 125

Goal Weight :118 ( It doesnt matter as I replace the fat with muscle)

hey! im a sophomore in college and gained 15lbs in the first semester last year. i lost it over this past summer, then gained about 7lbs this past semester! my stats:

height: 5'6

current weight: 142

goal weight: 130

oh, and im from southern louisiana, where we are below sea level haha.

Welcome Rell and jcl76!

SmileHope you both can stay on task and lose some weight this new year with us!

Im 5'11 Male 225 lbs and I'm a junior in college

I actually was 265 lbs for the last 5 years because i played footbal throughout highschool and after highschool i couldn't stop eating like i did while i was so active. I play baseball in college but i dont burn that many calories. I decided i needed to change. I went from 265 from last march down to 205 in august.  I was so happy where i was, then I went back off to college and gained 20 pounds over the last semester, I can't believe i let it happen. I really need to lose atleast 10-15 pounds in the next month- 2 months.

Hey Moose18, I feel the same thing. I never thought I would gain the freshman fifteen. I always told myself that I wouldnt gain anything, but here I am 15 pounds heavier. For me, in high school I played sports year round, and ate kinda whatever I wanted but still healthy. Now in college, I didn't really exercise at all first semester and ate the same maybe more. But since this new year I realized I need to exercise so I have been doing so everyday now. I hope you can stay motivated with us

Hey everyone!

Definitely down with this idea!

Background: I'm a sophmore at Queen's (Canada) for Commerce. Our program is very rigorous and extremely stressful at times ... and when that happens, my eating and exercise plans are the first to slide.

I've never really been at a good weight (150lbs throughout most of highschool) so I decided freshman year I was goign to turn things around .. I actually ended up LOSING 15lbs as a frosh and was down to 135lbs. from about January of last year and throughout the summer... then first semester sophmore year i F-ed up big time! I'm now worse than ever weighing 155 ringing in the new year.

Start Weight (Jan. 2): 155lbs
Current Weight (Jan. 8): 151lbs
Goal Weight (Summer): 125lbs (plan to lose about 1-2lbs per week)

As for Hunter's questions:

I like to work out at random times when I feel the school's gym won't be too crowded (I hate waiting for machines). So I go in the mornings around 10am when I don't have classes or during 4pm or so when it's relatively dead.

I generally do an hour on the elliptical aiming for about 550-750 calories burnt depending on how hard I want to go that day. My goal for the new year is to go at least 4 times a week.

I'm from about an hour outside Toronto, Ontario, but am currently in Kingston. No clue about elevation. :S

hey guys, i'm a junior in college and although i didn't start drinking until halfway through my freshman year my friends are quite the champions. the biggest rule i've given myself is never to drink more than one night a weekend. however, sometimes this results in me going nuts! i never pursue buying beer; i'll only drink it if it's free! i have been trying to just take some mixed shots to limit the sugar intake along with my alcohol consumption. what does everyone else do?

Drink in moderation and look up your favorite drinks before hand to see the calories in it. Also, instead of limiting your calorie intake to make up for the drinking use that day as a maintenance day. Use that day as more of a resting day and go back to you losing intake the next day.
