Frienemies

I found this section in a book I got for my birthday (Cherry Bomb by Carrie Borzillo-Vrenna). And a particular section piqued my interest -mostly because right BEFORE I read the section I dealt with one of my own 'frienemy' all day previously. I wanted to share it to everyone and hope that others can identify toxic 'friendships' before they can bring you down too far:

'Popularised in the Lindsay Lohan movie Mean Girls in 2004, frienemy is a mash-up of of friend and enemy. Whether we like it or not, Frienemies enter our lives like Tasmanian devils and can cause quite a stir. The goal is to identify them and kick them to the curb faster than you can say "Oh no you didn't!". It's not easy to identify a fake friend, or friendly enemy, when her dis is coupled with a compliment or when that dig comeswith a smile. Frienemies seduce you into a false sense of friendship and then hit you when you're least expecting it just to feel better about themselves or take advantage of what you have to offer.

The following examples should help you figure out if you've made a friend or frienemy:'

A friend will: hold your hair back while you throw up after a night of partying like a rockstar
A frienemy will: Do so while secretly snapping a picture from her camera phone

A friend will: coordinate outfits with you before a big night out.
A frienemy will: tell you she's wearing jeans and boots and shows up in a cute little minidress and stilettos.

A friend will: point out that your boobs look bigger.
A frienemy will: tell you 'You look like you've gained weight, but it looks great in your boobs!'

A friend will: marvel at the new rock on your finger, congratulates you on the big news, and wants every detail of the proposal.
A frienemy will: look at the ring on your finger and say 'Oh. Your ring is so cute!'

A friend will: call to share her good AND bad news
A frienemy will: only call to brag

A friend will: act like your wing-woman when you're out trolling for men.
A frienemy will: slip the guy you're interested in her number instead.

A friend will: tell you you look great, even when you don't
A frienemy will: tell you 'You look great. You must have lost weight, huh?"

A friend will: tell you she saw your boyfriend kissing another girl (and it's TRUE)
A frienemy will: tell you upsetting stuff about your boyfriend's love life that happened years before you even met him.

A friend will: totally understand that you had to cancel plans because you got in a terrible fight with your boyfriend/parents/are sick/etc...even if those plans where New Years.
A frienemy will: think only about how her night was ruined and then proceeds to air your dirty laundry while she's out

A friend will: tell you how awesome your wedding dress, wedding plans, and wedding hair is.
A frienemy will: copy everything you did for her wedding and play it off as if they where her original ideas.

Hahaha, awww, my friends and I do this to each other all the time. It's all in fun.

I don't really have any frienemy experiences, though.. must be lucky.
