i'm curious what happens when you take normal plain nonfat yogurt thats the fridge soft kind and plop it in the freezer. will it come out as a half assed nasty version of soft serve frozen yogurt? will it be yummy like frozen yogurt? i'm way too cheap to try this for myself and curious if anyone has the answer before i destroy perfectly yummy yogurt.

Well I did it with soy yogurt recently and it froze really hard- so hard I had to put it in the microwave. Other than that though, tasted fine. You might have better results with normal yogurt.

I have done this many times before.  You just have to stir it a few times during the freezing process for it not to freeze solid.  I find it very yummy and a nice "desserty" change to plain yogurt.  I've done this with juices as well - and it becomes a sort of italian ice (the italians call it granita)

Ah! I love having a granita on a hot summer day!  I live in Rome, and they are wonderful.  Also, the really good ones (from the guy who pushes a cart around and shaves the ice in front of you) are small and hit the spot perfectly!

Back to the OP, I think that sounds like a great idea, although I agree with cc31 that you need to stir it a couple of times (just like you would if you were making homemade ice cream).

Ohhh, I should totally make this! How often would you say stirring is needed?

I recently did this with some dannon light and fit.

I put it in the freezer and about two hours later had myself some DELICIOUS frozen yogurt, not too hard by any means.  The next day, however, it was rock solid after being in overnight.  So I'd suggest, if you feel like having one just make sure it has only been in there a few hours... or do the stirring thing as cc31 mentioned. When it's hard, though, it makes it take longer to eat, which lets you enjoy it longer for less calories than a large portion of ice cream.  I definitely say try it!

I would stir it a couple of times until it hardens up a bit...but I wouldn't freeze a lot at one time...otherwise you will have to leave it in the freezer for an extended period of time, and like stayinthenight said, it does get really really hard overnight.

Thanks, guys! I know this is sort of off topic, but has anyone tried something similar with pudding?

Nope...but it sounds like an intriguing idea....hmmmmmm

my 11 y.o. does this with pudding. it freezes solid and he scrapes away at it for an hour or so.

he keeps doing it, so it must be good. :D

I would stir it every 30 minutes or so, until it is at a frozen consistency... if you know what I mean ;)

ETA: you can do this with everything!  the italians do it with whipped cream as well and call it "semifreddo" (or half-frozen).  you can even do it with chocolate milk, for something called "ice milk"...

They have actually been showing commercials for the "whipped" yogurt that have people freezing it before they eat it.

cc31...you seem well versed in Italian desserts, are you a connoisseur?????? If so, we have much in common!!!  :)

My grandfather was Italian, and I grew up in Argentina (where the majority of the population is either of Italian or Spanish descent) so you could say I'm a connoiseur :)

That's awesome!  I am American, but I moved to Rome about a year ago to live with my husband (then fiance)...hence knowing a lot about Italian desserts (and food) as well!
