Weight Loss

I was just listening to this excellent weekly program from the Australian national broadcaster, called the health report. This week they were talking about the reason for the obesity epidemic, and particularly linking the growth in obesity with the start of using fructose in food stuffs. I am not going to summarise everything they say, because I don't want to get anything wrong, or highlight the wrong aspects of the report. But if you have time, follow the link and either listen to the program, (either directly or later on your mp3 player) or read the transcript.

Along with discussing why fructose isn't great for you when processed and removed from the fibre it comes with naturally, (ie eating fruit is good, juice etc isn't so great) it also discusses 3 reasons why exercise is necessary in keeping down weight (that doesn't just include burning calories) and much more.

Great article.

glad all you guys have also found it interesting. I am planning to listen to it again on my mp3 player while walking to university so i can try and get all the information into my head!!!
Really excellent - thanks.. now I'm going to go check labels in my kitchen. I think I've got most of the HFCS out of there, but you never know where it might be lurking!
Ack... it's in everything, including Skinny Cow bars! Oh noooo!!!
Hey - what about corn syrup and cane syrup? Anyone know if they are the same thing? For example Kashi Go Lean has cane syrup in it...

Oh no! It's in the Skinny Cow bars? I love those!! I better check when I get home... :-(
cane syrup or evaporated cane juice is a very nice way of saying sugar, aka sucrose.
i would think any simple sugars without fiber or protien to back it up wouldnt be that good. your insulin spikes when your body can easily access the sugar.

just listening to this again today on my mp3 while walking home from uni. Is it conceited to bump your own post?
Anyway please take the time to download and listen to the program, it is very interesting and explains not just the simple answers but also the more complex involved ones.

Jane I don't think it's conceited...some of us missed this the first round and I'm glad I get to see it now, so thanks for bumping it up!

Wow, that was really an amazing article.
It really gave me chills in 2 spots. One where Dr. Lustig said that the food industry either knowingly or unknowingly is "poisoning" people, and the second was that sugar can cause the same liver disease as alcoholism!!!
Very eye opening, thanks for the post!

kattastic, the first time i listened i was spellbound the whole time. it is really scary what the HFCS must be doing, and I am very glad I grew up in Australia where it wasn't so common. It all makes alot of sense though.
The stuff about exercise i also found really interesting. Anyway I'm glad you enjoyed the post, and hope that it helped in some way.
cheers!!
