Fruit Flies HOW do you get rid of them
I had 1 bruised tomatoe about 2 weeks ago and I can't get rid of the fruit flies. They now sit on all my fresh fruit w/ nothing wrong with them. Any suggestions???
no suggestions...but I feel your pain
Christ, I know how you feel. I had like billions before I just cleaned EVERYTHING in there, anything possibly sticky or appealing.
Apparently everyone's been having the issue
One year it was terrible and I ended up just storing everything in the fridge.
i didn't click jazzy's link, so i apologize if this is old news. fill a small bowl with apple cider vinegar; they can't resist, and they drown in it. doesn't solve the problem, exactly, but it will minimize it.
I've had them around plenty of times! Take any peelings or fruit/veg that is going bad out of the house, or place it in a bag and tie the bag shut. Try keeping your still-good produce in the fridge or in a cupboard for a short time. Fruit flies have a really short life span, so they should die off in a few days.
One of the doctors I work with (who knows how to solve almost any problem with a plastic soda bottle) recommended trying this when I had a bunch of mosquitos in my apartment:

I don't know if it would work with fruit flies also, but it might be a good way to get them with cider vinegar, instead of the bowl suggested above, since this way you can make sure they won't be able to fly back out.
For some reason there's a space in that link - you'll need to remove it for it to work.
Fruit flies only live for one day, but lay lots of eggs everywhere...so you can use the various methods mentioned to get rid of the existing ones, but what you really need to do to prevent tomorrow's and tomorrow's and tomorrow's is wipe down all surfaces with a bleach-and-water solution. That includes cupboard doors and tops, drawers, stove/oven, fridge, floors, everything.
I hate cleaning so that is always my last resort. Sometimes just putting away your produce for a few days will be sufficient - either put them in the fridge or put them in a bowl with a dish towel securely tucked around it.
Pour some wine into a cup and cover it tightly with saran wrap/cling wrap. Poke a few finger tip sized holes into it and place it by the fruit flies. They'll get lured in and won't be able to get out. It traps dozens of them.
I have had a lot of luck with this easy method:
Put half water and half apple cider vinegar into a small jar or cup (I fill mine to the top, but don't know if that matters).
Add a couple of drops of liquid dishwashing soap.
Leave on the counter overnight.
Voila... fruit flies will magically appear in the bottom of the cup/jar.
I found this explanation on the internet for something similar:

Turn them out? :-)
Get a bottle of sweet white wine. Drink it or share it with others, but leave at least a cup or so in the bottle. Leave the bottle out in your kitchen, uncorked. The fruit flies will go into the bottle and drown in the wine. When you've got a lot of dead flies in the bottle and not in the rest of the kitchen, just throw the bottle out.
I found this one out by accident when my husband left the wine out, and while it was disgusting to find a bottle full of dead bugs when I'd wanted a glass of reisling, I wasn't too upset because there wasn't a swarm of fruit flies around my fruit basket anymore!
Last time I had a problem, this worked after 1 day. Use:
- 1 small jar with a tablespoon of hot sauce/salsa
- Funnell made of computer paper with a small point
Make the funnell big/small enough that it fills the jar opening and touches the rim on all sides.
The flies are attracted to the sauce and are unable to make their way back into the funnell and get stuck in the jar.
put a small bowl out with a bit of juice and some dishsoap on top....the fruit flies try to drink the juice and the soap stops them from flying away so they drown.
replace the mixture daily till all the fruit flies are gone (it usually only takes me a day or 2)
in my expierence, as soon as I get rid of the bad/rotten fruit they go away (usually within a couple of hours). Is it possible there is some bad fruit hiding in the trash or under the sink? Hy husband one had fruit flies he couldn't get rid of and it turned out that he had some beer bottles under the sink with lime in them.
I'm a little late but....
We had a fruit fly "situation" this summer that was seriously out of control. I resorted to using the vaccuum cleaner. I used the upholstery attachment and just sucked the little buggers up. They were driving me insane so it became almost fun to suck them up mid-flight. Does that make me a terrible person?
I tried the apple cider vinegar in bottle with paper funnel trick. It worked great.
Fruit flies do not live for only one day. They actually live for about two weeks. One of the best ways I've done it is using beer. Fruit flies love yeast and actually thrive when it is around, that includes rising bread dough and beer. I usually open a bottle of beer and place it in a few glasses around the kitchen or where ever the problem seems to be. Place plastic wrap or not, it doesn't matter.
