How much is too much fruit???

Quote  |  Reply
i know that a calorie is a calorie, and this may be preventing me or even making me gain weight...

besides my healthy breakfast, lunch, and dinner, after dinner I had:

1 large golden apple

a medium sweet potato (not a fruit, but letting you know what i had)

2 large bananas

4 small clementines

and 2 rings of fresh pineapple

and i feel like exploding... probably more because of the sheer amount of fiber in all of that.

is this just too much fruit??

If you can fit that within your daily caloric limit and get all the nutrients out of the other food groups, sure. Thats definately healthy.

Nope!  Not too much fruit....today I have eaten

part of a clementine
3/4 cup blueberries
3/4 cup black berries
2 ounces oj
2 cups miscellaneous veggies
2 bananas

that is 9 servings of fruit and veggies....that is what I aim for...the fruits are higher in calories, but clementines are so small and low-cal IMO
Definitely not.
On the average day I eat  blueberries, raspberries, cherries, grapes, peaches, pears, mandarins... yeaahhh. I'm addicted to fruit.
is there even such a thing as too much fruit? lol as long as you are within your calories and you aren't worried about sugar, you're fine
just remember that fruit is mostly carbs which are sugar.. and its easier to lose weight with out tons of carbs.. but fruit is really really good 4 you, so better that than other things

nope not 2 much at all.. just spread it out if u havent already =)

I've actually been recommended not to eat fruit after around 3pm because of the sugars. Not that it's a bad thing when you're counting calories, but the sugar you're getting from the fruit late in the day may be causing you to retain water. That might be the oh-so-full feeling you're having. As long as you're drinking plenty of water to wash out the sugar from the fruit, it should be fine. I am personally not a huge fruit person, but more power to ya! Fruits are super healthy.

i don't think it's too much fruit, but i will say that the only time i can remember eating that much fruit after dinner is when i was eating very little all day.  then i'd have dinner.  and then, w/o fail, i'd have like five apples and two pears.  or if i didn't, i'd wake up in the middle of the night and eat cereal and fruit.  i was trying to get full on as few calories as possible and still get my yummy factor in.

so while i think fruit is healthy, perhaps you could try sticking some of those fruits in as snacks during the day.  or eating a bigger lunch?

I think that the only concern I would have is keeping an eye on how much sugar you are eating.

Remember, honey, although natural - is still sugar. The same goes for the sugars in fruit.

I eat all the fruit I want. There is no such thing for me as too much. There is so much food with a such a relatively small amount of calories that (like you mention) you will pop before you get too much.

I would worry more about the risk of keeping your stomach stretched so that if you ever find yourself in a situation where you need to fill up on foods that are not so good for you, you will find yourself overdoing it.

When I used to eat a lot of fruit, it made me so bloated and.... sometimes made me RUN to the toilet. I no longer eat fruit because I find it way too sugary... plus I believe fructose is not good for you: but most don't agree with me, so I am not telling you to cut fruit out of your diet completely, but I think you should cut it down to about 2 - 3 cups per day of fruits like berries! Berries have the lowest sugar content of any other fruit - plus they have the most health benefits!!
if fruits arnt so good to eat so late in the day, what can my 9 oclock snack be? i usually have an apple?
Me too- Lately- I've been having an apple with a piece of cheddar cheese in the evenings.  It seems to be helping me with not doing too much snacking in the evenings and plus- it's a way of getting more fiber.  Maybe it depends on the fruit?
You should be eating a minimum of 5 portions of fruit and veg a day, some studies suggest as many as 10-12. One portion is equavilent to your fist (the bigger your fist the bigger your portion).

Most vegetables and many fruits have a 'negative calories' meaning that they take your body more energy to digest them than they actually provide you, this is is espeically true of green veg with a high water content, but doesnt include high sugar fruits or starchy veg.

I say eat as much fruit and veg as possible
hummus take in consideration that fruit = sugar. most of the calories from fruit are sugars. Sugar causes insulin spikes. insulin in the most anabolic (muscle building) compound known to man. Think about this though, anything that creates muscle also creates fat. These insulin spikes are carrying all this sugar out of your digestive system and storing it as fat because your protein intake is so low. I am not making this up. This is why diabetics have a sudden increase in fat storage as soon as they are diagnosed and why A LOT of vegetarians are overweight. Take it with a grain of salt, fruit is tremendous for you in moderation but YES you can have too much and the line is fine between too much and none. BTW did you know fruit isnt actually necessary to have a healthy diet. There are much more micronutrients in vegetables and all the nutrients in fruits can be found in other sources. Hope the tid bit helped.
are you eating a lot of veggies as well?
try substituting some of your fruit with vegetables.  i find vegetables a bit plain but try not to drown them in sauce or salt.
peppers and carrots are some of the few veggies i like raw, which i will slice in to sticks and eat with a half an orange or apple.  brocolli, brussel sprouts and peas, i buy frozen and steam them.  i eat them with a bit of kimchi, a few pickle slices or couple olives.

It's probably not too much fruit but on top of your other meals, it could well be too many calories. Did you add it all up? What did it come to? What's your daily burn? If you didn't exceed your daily calorie allowance, I don't see a problem.

There is no junk food in my house and when I eat too many calories, it's usually fruit. I wish I could say fruit calories are freebies, but they don't seem to be.

I hate it how people say stuff about fruit causing insulin spikes and consequently fat gain. All that knowledge does to people is makes them even more obsessive, like, if they can't eat fruit without fear what the heck can they eat? It reminds of the darned atkins diet.

Exactly, the sugar in fruit is not REFINED sugar like in candy and such that causes insulin spikes and sugar rushes. It's a complex sugar and carb, the benefits FAR outweight any negatives.

There is such thing as too much fruit, provided that:

1) you stay in your overall calorie levels AND

2) you stay more or less within the acceptable balance for carbs/protein/fat.

You can't eat all fruit, obviously.  You need the protein and fat, and you won't get nearly enough if the majority of your diet is fruit.  As for fruit having so much sugar, DON'T worry about that!  It is complex sugar that is not nearly the problem for  "insulin spikes and fat gain" as the simple carbs/sugars.  And ESPECIALLY the refined sugar and grains.   You need to be getting enough FIBER carbs (both soluble and nonsoluble) and enough protein and fat.  Eat all the fruit you want within those parameters.

Archer im sorry, fructose is not a complex carbohydrate.  However, it does have the highest GI ( glycemic index ) of all other carbohydrates besides maltodextrin and dextrose. Obviously you dont know the severity of the insulin compound and are not familiar with the differant types of carbohydrates. Maybe a little research before we misinform people next time. It is the micronutrients in fruit that make them good for you anyhow. Comparitively the macronutrients in fruit are worse than those of a doughnut. Dont beleive me?
