Too Much Fruit?

Quote  |  Reply

Hi all!

I get the feeling I get too much sugar everyday from all the fruit I eat, but if I don't eat fruit I tend to eat veg doused in soy sauce and get way too much sodium!

I'm 5'4, 135 lbs, trying to get to 125. I exercise about 45 min/4 days a week and tend to eat about 1500 cals daily. Could all the sugar in the fruit be bad for me?

Below is a menu of what I usually eat in a day, let me know if you have any suggestions for substitutes to even out my nutrition a bit:

Breakfast:

1 c skim milk, special K red berries, 1/2 cup raspberries, coffee

Lunch:

1/2 cup raspberries, 1/2 cup strawberries, 1/2 cup canned peaches, Stonyfield farm yogurt (usu. fruit flavor or chocolate underground yum)

Snack: (varies)

Fat-free cottage cheese with pineapples, grapes

Hummous and assorted veg

Dinner:

Dinner changes a lot, it's usually where I get my veg and mix it with pasta or rice

Dessert: Sorbet plus sometimes I add fruit like mango to it

Tea w/ honey, diet swiss miss throughout the day

Thanks, any suggestions would be great!

that sounds like a lot of fruit to me.  If you are going to eat fruit, you should stick with berries.  I recommend you try to at least add more vegetables to your diet

I don't think you're eating too much fruit. I think you're just not eating enough protein.

I thought that a lot of the protien I'm getting is from the dairy...any suggestions on what to substitute for what I am eating? I don't want any more calories

I don't have any specific suggestions, sorry. But look around on other people's menus that they post on here and see what kind of meals they have that include lean meats and legumes. The dairy does have protein in it but probably not enough. how many grams are you getting per day?
Are you a vegetarian? Dairy products alone don't have enough protein in them... if you don't want to eat meat, you need to start eating beans, lentils, soy etc. Fruit is healthy, but yes, based on this food list you're eating about twice as much of it as you should - moderation in all things makes for a balanced diet. That means dairy AND fruit AND vegetables AND protein in some form, and unless you have some real objection to it, whole grains/starch in some form...

I don't know. I tend to look at things from a total calories prospective.  And from checking the nutritional stats from the fruit you're eating, you really not eating that much.  You're only taking in about 32 calories from the raspberries and 24.5 calories from the stawberries.  The peaches are somewhat okay too, but try to limit the canned peaches since they mostly preserved in high frutose corn syrup.

I would say you aren't getting enough fat and not enough protien either.  Fruit is wonderful and good for you, and full of fiber, but I don't think you are eating enough calories with going to the gym too.

I agree with the above - eat some beans, pasta, nuts, maybe veggie burgers or peanut butter to get your fat and protien up.  Do you like tofu?  Skim milk doesn't have as much protien, I THINK, I could be wrong.  What does your analysis say on your carb/fats/protien ratios?

Fruit sugar from raw fruit is good for you, so don't worry about that.

If this is your averag daily menu, you could use a bunch of changes..  I'd advise cutting the diet swiss miss, for one thing, it only adds to your sweet tooth cravings, and is bad for you on top of that.

words of advice:
if oyu're drinking skim milk because it'sf at free, drink fat free soy milk at least so you get extra protein

OR
make a protein shake with protein powder AND fat free soy milk so you get both :)

I LOVE fruit and eat it all day...

I've tried a few different things to cut down on the sugar and carbs I was getting from fruit.  I've started substituting things like blueberries and blackberries for pineapple and mango.  I've also started trying to eat veggies instead of fruit to cut back on the sugar.

eat nuts, beans, more soy milk. use a low cal/low fat/low carb dressing for your veggies, not soy sauce.  mix different beans, nuts with the rice/pasta dishes you're eating.  eat nuts throughout the day with your fruit.  stay away from canned fruit, drenched in sugar and fat. eat ezekiel bread and kashi golean cereal. worldwide protein shakes -- 170cals, 35g protein, 1-3g carbs, 1g fat and i promisethe chocolate and vanilla ones taste good.  try meat alternatives like morningstar farms, trader joes, etc. try for yogurt with lower sugar content, lower cals, but same amount of protein, and eat more of it.

I eat a lot of fruit and it hasn't hindered my progress in any way. Today, for instance, I had 10 strawberries, a peach, a mango, 2 apples, 2 plum tomatoes, and a banana; this is pretty typical for me.

I thiiiiink the fruit is pushing you towards the high end of your daily sugar recommendation, if not going over.

I had an "extra-large" peach today with my breakfast, and it says I've got 47% of my sugar intake for today. ONE PEACH. x_x And isn't that using the FDA standard, which goes off the 2k-cals-a-day, super-fit-tall-and-athletic-male standard?

I totally have the same problem with fruit though. Gotta have it, breakfast lunch and dinner.

I'm jumping on the Eat More Good Fats and Protein bandwagon.

I thought that the sugars in fruits are good for you, and don't actually count for much of your daily intake of sugar.
