Fruit seeds?

Quote  |  Reply
More strange health questions.

If anyone could answer this for me or link me to a source with some light on this subject, I'll be very greatful ^_^

So, you know how when we eat watermelon or apples and whatnot, we tend to spit out the seeds or take them out before eating the fruit?

We all know how sunflower seeds (unsalted obviously, DUH) and pumpkin seeds, are actually really healthy.

So....wouldn't eating the fruit seeds be healthy too? O_O

I don't know if they're healthy, but I'm really hoping there's nothing bad about eating them.  I eat the apple seeds in my apples...I just chomp right on through the core =P I don't let any of my apple go to waste! haha

I was always afraid of eating them as a kid because people told me fruit would grow inside my stomach :D

No amount of fiber could help me pass a watermelon!
Haha I remember being told that!  I also remember freaking out when I'd eat a little white one on accident =\  Adults can be so cruel! haha

That one Rugrats episode didn't help any either (know what I'm talkin about?? =P).

And -- I think I'd rather have it surgically removed than try to pass that thing!  If I passed it I'd have a hard time dealing with the thought that something I uhh..passed..looks yummy =D

It depends on the fruit involved.  Apple seeds and peach, cherry and apricot pits all contain small traces of cyanide.  So do bitter almonds.  Plum pits contain strychnine in quantities that can be harmful to pets -- don't let your dogs crunch them!  It might be rather difficult to eat enough of these seeds to cause problems, although I seem to remember a news story a number of years ago about a man who poisoned himself mildly by eating an entire cup of apple seeds in order to prove they weren't dangerous to eat;  that one sort of stuck in my head.

However, as you point out, not all seeds are dangerous to eat and some are quite beneficial.  If it's not customary to eat the seeds of something, I would suggest you look it up and find out if there's some specific reason.  If not, munch away, I suppose.

I think the reason we don't eat most of them is that they don't taste too good.  If you've ever accidentally crunched an orange pip it's not a good experience!  But the little seeds in a kiwifruit just slip down without you noticing.  The pumpkin seeds sold for eating are usually the dark green sort.  The white ones in the Hallowe'en orange pumpkins are pretty nasty by comparison.

deflepfan- I eat the ENTIRE apple too!! lol I thought i was the only weird one and I'm always a little embarrased to let people see me eat apples, but I also hate seeing people waste soo much of the apple! some people leave the entire center, like huge chunks of delicious edible apple and it drives me crazy.

i eat the seeds out of a lot of things actually, I think in moderation it's ok. Just don't eat a whole cup of apple seeds like that one guy.

gibbit - I get a little embarrassed too because the reaction I get is 0_0 You eat the ENTIRE apple?!  That's gross!

SOO...when I would take an apple in my lunch I would slice it up.  I left the core and the seeds but no one could really tell cause I had sliced it up so small ;P

It drives me crazy when people waste apple, and I don't see how they can stand getting apple juice all over their face when they get down to the center!  SO MESSY =P

Hey!  Those white pumpkin seeds and the green ones are the same thing!  The white ones are the ones that have not been shelled!  I like to roast them with a little cayenne pepper and use them my salads.   Roasting them is soo easy - just a very low temp oven (170 or so) and about 30 minutes.  Yeah, I guess if you ate the white shell it would be yucky!
