I had a question about processed sugar in general. Now, I want to preface this by saying that I know that anything containing processed sugar is bad and I am staying away from candies and junk food in general. However, I am eating fruits, for example I had a huge peach, and my concern is that sugar from fruits may be bad for me too.

I do have a history of diabetes in my family and am overweight(working on it and making progress), so I am concerned that if I eat fruit, it may effect my health and perhaps lead to me getting Diabetes earlier.

Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

The sugars found in fruits are natural sugars, not processed.  And while some fruits are higher in their natural sugar content than others, I think all fruits are healthy for everyone to consume.

Perhaps this is a question to ask to your doctor when it comes down to how the natural sugars in fruits will effect your diebetes.

Good luck to you! :)

I'm diabetic, and I was told by my doctor that some of my daily carb intake shold come from fruit sugars. Having a moderate amount of fruit sugars in your diet is MUCH better than having that amount of refined sugar. But just don't go overboard on the fruit... eat a normal serving size, and do not do so when you're going to be having a lot of other carbs with that meal. If you eat more than one serving of fruit at a time, try to space it out... If you had some with breakfast, try to hold off on more until dinner. (I personally eat about 3 servings of fruit per day, including a raw food bar, and my diabetes is still 100% in control by diet only... No medicine required!)

It all comes down to the science of how, and how fast your body breaks down and releases sugar through out your body.

In this case, it comes down to refined sugars (sucrose) against fruit sugars (fructose).

  • Fructose breaks down slower and evener then sucrose, leaving you feeling more satisfied and energetic.
  • Sucrose, on the other hand, breaks-down too quickly into roughly equal parts of sucrose and glucose. It's spread far too fast into our bloodstreams. Now, if the body sense too much glucose in the bloodstream, the body converts that glucose into glycogens, a polysaccaride that gives a short-lived energy boost. (This is what usually causes you to "crash" [Feel fatigue]) Now, if there's too much of THAT, then the body turns it into a form of fat.

There's this whole Glycemic Index thing that has all of this sorted out. You can google a chart and it should give you all the information on certain foods and how fast they breakdown in your bloodstream.

I agree with art. Here's the long of it.

Here's the short of it:

"In short the reason why Fruit sugar is better for you than table sugar
is that by eating table sugar (Sucrose) our bodies go out of sync with
our sugar levels as the sugar is processed in the body extremely fast
and in doing this the body informs the pancreas to pump out insulin.
Someone with a weak pancreas will have a hard time doing this.

Fructose (Fruit sugar) is broken down more slowly which allows the
body more time to react to the sweetener that has been consumed. This
puts less stress on the body and also the pancreas which is good news
for diabetics as they too can have sweet tasting things but without
the worry of a sudden sugar spike."

Thank you everyone for writing. You are all very sweet & helpful.

Best Wishes,

Amir
