Fruit & Vegetable Challenge -ALWAYS OPEN

Quote  |  Reply

Do you get your 5  A Day?  I know there are many days that I have a hard time getting in the minimum 5 fruit/vegetables a day much less the recommended 5-9 servings.  So I'm starting this challenge to help me keep track of my fruit/vegetable servings each day.

How it works:

Chose your goal for the month. Then keep track each day of how many servings of fruits & vegetables you eat.  You post here (daily, weekly or whenever) with the running total of the number of servings you have had so far for the month. Use the format: servings to date/ serving goal. For example, if your goal is 5 servings of fruit/vegetables per day your goal would be 155. So if you ate 5 serving of vegetables on day 1 you would post 5/155.  Please make a new post each time so that I don't miss any updates.

What is a serving:

  • 1/2 cup of fruit
  • 1 medium piece of fruit
  • 1/4 cup of dried fruit
  • 3/4 cup (6 ounces) of 100% fruit or vegetable juice
  • 1 cup of leafy vegetables
  • 1/2 cup of cooked or raw vegetables

Although not required feel free to include recipes or to list the fruits/vegetables you eat to help us all find new fruits/vegetables to try and new ways to fix them.

This is a new and different challenge.  I know that I don't get that many in but I will start out low and then see what I can accomplish.

3 a day/93 a month. 31 Days has MARCH!  (LOL)   Wink

Another challenge that might work in tandem with this one! Consider joining

http://caloriecount.about.com/slow-steady-cha llenge-ft130767

Best of luck to one and all!

Thanks for joining me Heavenly.

I love most vegetables but don't care for most fruits so my goal for March is to try to incorporate more fruit into my diet - and maybe replace some of the sweets!

I usually have 4-5 servings a day of vegetables so I'm going to aim for 7 servings.   With at least 2-3 servings of fruit each week.

Best of luck to you!

I'm off to a good start today.  I've had my fruit (3/4 c orange juice) with breakfast and lunch was a large salad with 1 1/2 c mixed greens and 1/2 c mushrooms.

So far that's 3 1/2 servings for the day.

I just got back from the grocery and picked up fresh carrots, broccoli, mushrooms, lettuce and kiwi along with some frozen green beans, spinach, mixed vegetables and some canned mandarine oranges. My daughter likes the fruits and I plan on trying them for the first time!

Edited: Finished up the day with 1 c broccoli and 2 c mushrooms with my dinner.  So a total for today of 9 servings.

9/217

I've accomplished my 3 then some.

I had a large salad (lettuce, tomato, cucumber, pepperconi, and onion. I'd calculate that as 3 servings because the salad was very very large. And I just got done having 3 cups of canteloupe. 2 cups of frozen mixed vegetables.

Thanks for starting this Challenge, even if its only you and me!

You are caluculating that there are 31 days in the month of March for your end total right?  Just checking in on you.

Take care and God Bless.

Anyone else???

19/217

Fruits: orange juice
Veggies: mixed veggies(mostly corn, peas with a few carrots and green beans), mushrooms, salad (lettuce, broccoli, mushrooms)

I really need to try this! I do my best to eat healthy, but I'm remiss in the fruit and vegetables department...I know there are days when I probably only have two servings, and I need to try for 5.

Yesterday I had 5 servings

  • - omelette with 1/2 cup assorted veggies in it (mushroom, onion and corn) for lunch
  • - 1 cup frozen mixed vegetables with dinner, and chicken cacciatore made with fresh tomato and carrots in the sauce.
  • - strawberry pancakes for dessert made with a whole punnet of fresh strawberries, gently caramelised in a frypan because they were on the dry side. They were yummy!

So that's 5/155

I did not post for March 1st so here it is.

  • 1.5 servings celery sticks.
  • 2 cups zuchinni
  • .25, lettuce, tomato and onion

9.75/93

Welcome kajikit!

fruits: orange juice, 1/4 c blueberries  - 1 1/2 servings total

Veggies: 4 servings mixed veggies(mostly corn, peas with a few carrots and green beans), 2 servings  bean salad (chick peas, kidney beans, peas, onions), maybe 1/2 serving total veggies on sandwich(lettuce, spinach leaves, green peppers, pickles) --  6 1/2 servings total

27/217

My fruit/veggie consumption sucked today! I had a small tangerine for a snack, a handful of frozen corn in my toasted sandwich at lunchtime (not enough to count!), and a full cup of frozen vegetables with dinner. If potato counted then I had an extra serve - but I'm pretty sure that it doesn't count when it's fried! lol (DH wanted potato cakes and they were yummy...) Oh, and there was an onion in the potato cakes. So call it 4 serves all told.

9/155

I forgot to post yesterday's servings.

March 3rd

  1. 1/2 cup corn
  2. 2 cups canteloupe
  3. 1 serving raisins

9.75+5.5= 15.25/93

Today March 4th

  1. 3 cups canteloupe
  2. 1 serving raisins
  3. 1/2 cup spaghetti sauce

15.25+7.5=22.75

22.75/93

so far I am doing better than the 3 I pledge, but this is only the beginning of the month.

Take care and God Bless.   Hopefully I will remember to log tomorrow.

Not a good day at all. Embarassed

1/2 serving - veggies on my sandwich - lettuce, spinach, green peppers, pickles 1 serving raw veggies (carrots & green pepper strips) with dip

28.5/217

I did better today...

- I had leftover cacciatore for lunch today with a cup of frozen vegetables in it plus the tomato sauce/veggies in the cacciatore, so that's 3 serves.

- I had a hamburger with onions and mushrooms and tomato/lettuce for dinner - 1 serving.

- and I had the world's largest orange for dessert - John said they looked like coloured grapefruit! - 2 serves

- and lastly I had a big serve of airpopped popcorn for a snack, but I don't think that counts because it's dried...

- 15/155

carrot sticks, green pepper strips, broccoli, mushrooms, potato

4 servings total - I probably had 3 servings of potatoes but will only count as 1 vegetable serving and 2 starches - at least they were boiled with the skin on so they did have some nutrition in them.

32.5/217

  1. 1.25 serving tomatoes
  2. 3 servings canteloup

22.75+1.25+3= 27

This is the posting for March 5th. I guess I am always going to be a day behind. Sorry.

27/93

I did a little better but not great.

orange juice - breakfast

raw veggies (carrots, green pepper, broccoli) w/dip, bean salad - lunch

broccoli - dinner

Total: 5 servings

heaven - Don't worry about how soon you get your numbers in. The idea is to help us to think about the foods we are eating and trying to get those fruits and veggies in.  I've noticed you've been having lots of canteloupe. Do you just cut it up and eat it or have it with something?  Maybe that's a fruit I could add to my breakfast. I'll have to look into it this weekend when I get groceries...

Been pretty busy the last few days so I didn't get my log in. I'm making an effort to add at least ONE extra serve of fruit and ONE extra veg to my day, because otherwise I'm only having about three and that's not nearly enough!

Mar 5  -

  • 1 orange - 1 serve
  • 1 cup frozen mixed vegetables - 2 serves
  • homemade pitabread pizza with onion and mushrooms - 1/2 serve
  • strawberry cheese cake with real strawberries (plus a few extra) - 1 serve

Mar 6 - I was on the go all day and I had to squish my food in...

  • strawberry cheesecake (with real strawberries embedded in it) - 1 serve
  • 1 large whole tomato (it was yummy!) - 1 serve
  • 1/4 cup frozen mixed vegetables in my jaffle - 1/2 serve
  • 1 cup roasted carrots and beets - 2 serves
  • 1/2 cup homemade smashed potatoes. They were meant to be jacket potatoes but I forgot the stove and they fell apart, so I smashed them instead with a little low-fat sour cream for flavour! - 1 serve
  • 1 large apple - 1 serve

Total = Thurs, 4.5 serves, Fri 6.5 serves

26/155

I'm falling behind!

Mar 7:

  • orange juice 1 serving
  • boiled baby potato with skins 1 serving (probably actually 2 but I'll count as 1 vegetable & 1 starch)
  • vegetable soup (about 2 servings of vegetables)

A total of about 4 servings for the day

Mar 8:

  • orange juice 1 serving
  • vegetable soup (1/2 serving)
  • chicken pot pie (1/2 serving)
  • green beans (3 servings)

Total of 5 servings for the day

46.5/217

I'm not doing as well as I'd hoped.

Mar 9:

breakfast: orange juice - 1 serving

lunch: steamed mixed vegetables -  2 servings

Dinner: carrots - 2 serving
       &nb sp;     broccoli - 2 serving
       &nb sp;     boiled potato - 1 serving

snack: green pepper strips - 1/2 serving

8.5 servings total

55/217

Hey guys... I know I'm a bit late, but may I join you?  I have everything in my food log and I've been in strawberry heaven the past 2 weeks :)
