so, my girlfriend just called me and said that she's going to start a fruit and vegetable diet...  I told her that I didnt think this was very realistic...  and she said that all she had to do was take vitamins...

Yeah, I'm guessing that'll last all of a week maybe.

well, she said she did it before... I dont remember her doing it, and shes been my  best friend for 6 years...
thats like the drink a half gallon of vinegar per day and eat grapefruits. If she has done this in the past but didnt keep at it what makes her think she can do this again for any length of time towards her weightloss goal

Angie, I tried to tell her that, but she was getting defensive.. I didnt want to upset her so I just left it alone.
All you can do is leave it alone, honestly. If she has it in her head she as found some diet panacea, you'll just piss her off. She'll find out the hard way. What can you do?

spiro - you're right, but I know that fruits and veggies are healthy, yes... but that cant be good for you..??

no carbs? no protein..??
Fruits and veggies are carbs.
It's not going to kill her but how long can you live on just fruits and vegetables? Whatever she loses, she'll most likely gain back. She won't hurt herself unless she goes a while eating like 300 cals of them
spiro, I havent seen you around in a while you been doing ok?
There were a lot of spelling errors in the fitness forum. It's been a long week ;)

Truthfully I've been in paperwork hell and not been internetting like I normally do :(

Sammi - I know that.. but I'm talking other carbs, whole grains and such...
spiro, You kill me sometime on here but I do value your opinons around this place you have a lot of good ones to add and glad to see that your back posting somewhat=)
Ah, yeah.  Obviously she should try for something more balanced but I agree with spiro...not much you can do but let her figure that out herself...
wow, that's really sweet Angie. You made my day, thanks!

whats the difference between Vegan and Vegetarian?
As far as I know it's that they don't use animal products period if they're really strict.  Not just no burgers but no milk.  Not just no chicken but no eggs.  Some don't wear leather etc...

No way! Way more than soy (tofu is soy).  I'm vegan and I don't think I've had a soy product all month other than soy milk on cereal.  Beans/legumes are my main staple, any kind of beans.  Pinto, black, kidney, northern, garbanzo (chickpeas)... lentils.  I also eat a lot of seitan (vital wheat gluten boiled, basically.  It sounds sick but it's actually really good dependng on how you make it).  Other than beans and seitan I eat tons of veggies, 1 serving of whole grains a day, and 2 servings of fruit per day. Occasionally I eat nuts or nut butters.  It's a lot of food and hardly ever comes to over 1300 unless I do something stupid like eat a Taco Bell bean burrito fresco style. :)

Vegetarian is a diet, Vegan is more of a lifestlye.  I don't buy anything tested on animals, I don't eat anything with animal by-products in it, and I don't wear their skin/fur (be it leather or wool).  I know it sounds extreme but I've been vegan for 2 years and it's more like habit than anything now.

Oh, and by the way, it's very easy to be a junk food vegan, so vegan doesn't = healthy automatically!
