Fruits- do they trigger "sweet tooth"?

Quote  |  Reply
I am not sure whether it's only my problem, but whenever I take fruits, especially sweet tasting fruits. eg. grapes, plums, oranges, pomelos, I crave sweet things afterwards and sometimes I just can't stop eating fruits. That's why I have fruit binges sometimes at night- which is not very healthy. I'm a big lover of fruits, is it just because of my love of fruits that cause my sweet cravings, or do sweet things naturally trigger sweet tooth?

But still- I can't live without fruits! I know strawberries are low in calories, but what other fruits are the low in calories?

They don't trigger a sweet tooth for me. In fact, just the opposite. Apples are very good. Just about any fruit is but watch out for bananas and grapes. Some of the negative calorie fruits are pineapple, lemons, mangoes, prunes, watermelon, pumpkin, apricots, peaches, and pears. There are more so you might want to look up on the net about negative calorie foods. They REALLY help! Good luck!
Oh dear... I had a total of 200g of grapes today... ugh! I should watch out next time. ... Btw, perhaps I'm wrong, but I thought there are no such things as negative calorie foods??  I think those fruits you mentioned are just low in calories, but not negative calories. :)

Oh lingo. Every time I join something new, I have to learn a whole new vocabulary, and this "healthy eating" thing is no different:-) Negative calorie foods are foods that require more calories to digest than they contain. Ie, let's just say an apple has 60 calories. It would take your body more than 60 calories worth of energy to break up that apply goodness and use it for your body. Hence "negative calorie."

In the pre-digestive world, yep, they do still have calories, so you both win!

Google negative calorie foods and you'll find lists. I've been searching through the forum but having little luck, though I remember reading a list here fairly recently....

EDIT:

Christins73 posted this list of negative calorie foods in January:

Fruits

apple
cranberries
grapefruit
lemon
mango
orange
pineapple
raspberries
strawberries
tangerine

Vegetables

asparagus
beet
broccoli
cabbage (green)
carrot
cauliflower
celery
Chile peppers (hot)
cucumber
dandelion
endive
garden cress
garlic
green beans
lettuce
onion
papaya
radishes
spinach
turnip
I can understand that because fruits do contain sugar. Granted, some of the sugars are complex forms and take longer to break down, but fructose and glucose are in candy and other sweets and break down very quickly.

Apples are probably one of my top fruits to eat because I don't have that sugar craving as much...grapes kind of make me crave a little, but I love them. I just try to eat fruit with nuts, peanut butter, or cheese to help slow it all down, plus, it's yummy!
I haven't noticed fruits making me crave sweets.  I have noticed, however, that I can get myself craving sweets if I make myself used to having sweets, especially at a certain time.  Like if I have a little ice-cream or a pudding cup after dinner two or three days in a row, I'll start to crave sweets after dinner every day :-P .  So timing and habit may have something to do with when you crave certain things.

When you eat large amounts of fruits you are taking in large amounts of sugar, no matter what anyone says fruits still are sugar even if they are simple sugars. When you eat large amounts of sugar it in turn spikes your insulin lvls which then in turn make you get cravings, And no fruits are NOT negative calorie foods. One apple dependent on size and brand has and average of between 100-120 calories and no your body is not going to use that much or even half that many calories to digest and use it. Fruits are great maybe once a days in place of your carbohydrates but in access amount you simply going to jump your insulin lvls, make yourself get cravings, and activate your fat storing cells. Take it from me i have spent my life studying the body.

Arrgghhh I love fruit so much and have the same problem. ): We're a load of little fruit bats in my family.

I don't agree with some of the negative calorie foods though....mango is listed as having ~135 cals on CC (just added it, hee...), and with so much fiber, is it really that hard to digest?

Usually fruits serve to knock out my sweet tooth though. Ever frozen a really ripe mango? Tastes EXACTLY like a mango ice-cream of sorts. =swoon=
