Frustrated Big AND Tall Woman!
Not only am I big width wise, but I'm big length wise as well. I'm 6'1" and 300lbs with 51 inch hips.
Here are my issues:
Clothing: I can NEVER seem to find anything that fits me properly and looks good simultaneously. It either fits and looks shitty or I find something that looks amazing, but never fits. I usually have no problem finding big girl clothing, but the problem is this: every plus-size rack contains clothing that my GRANDMA would wear. Just because we big girls are big does NOT mean we don't have style! Secondly, just because I'm FAT does not make me SHORT! It IS possible to be fat and tall at the same damned time, why not make a Big and Tall for women?! Even if there ARE clothing that are meant for big and tall women, they don't think about HOW tall big women can be. I'm 6'1", I need pants that are NOT low riders because I aint abou to let my fat ass hang out of my jeans (no matter HOW skinny you are, that is NOT attractive) and I need pants that are slightly longer than my legs are so that I can cuff them up when I need to or cover my shoes when I need to. Why is it always one or the other and never both? I should consider becoming a clothing designer so I can design BEAUTIFUL and STYLISH clothing for my BEAUTIFUL and STYLISH fat girls! Also, big AND tall, not either or.
Public Bathrooms: This upsets me. When I gotta piss, the last thing I want to do is straddle the toilet JUST so I can close the damned door. Why can't they make the stalls just a tad bigger so fat girls like me can open and close the door WITHOUT having to jump up on the toilet seat?
Bus's: Ok, really... can they make the seats ANY smaller? ONE of my ass cheeks couldn't fit on the damned seats, let alone BOTH cheeks. And what about when everybody and their dog decides they want to take the bus? It's not like I can easily scoot over, I'm already shoulder to shoulder with the person next to me. Heck, I'm practically on their lap!
Airplanes: Same problem. The seats are TOO small and the leg space is inbearable, especially for someone as tall as I am. The fact that the person in front of you has the liberty to lay their seat back without thinking about the person BEHIND them is BOGUS! Why not separate the seats a bit more? Why not make the seats a little bigger so my big ass won't have to cramp up everytime I sit down? Ugh.
Clothing, again: Why is it that when people say "full figured" they mean "just a couple sizes larger"? When I think full figure, I think size 22-26, not size 14-16. If you're a size 14-16, kudos, you're skinny as hell. Now me... I'M full figured. I'm a size 26. *I* would be full figured. Beyonce? She aint thick. She aint full figured. She's skinny. Point blank. So even when the rack says "plus size" this is what it really means: "plus size: up to size 16"... 16 is NOT plus size, damn it! I was a size 16 at one point and people thought I was anorexic! GRR!
Ok, I'm done. =/
Thank you... now I'm done too!
Although I will say that I've always found it somewhat ridiculous that the seats on buses and in stadiums seem to be made for people no wider than I am...Frankly, I just can't see that working for most "normal" sized people let alone anybody who's bigger than average.
I'm not skinny as hell. I'm still Jello-rific =)

I'm 5ft 11 and a uk size 14 ( most days, somedays they are a big snug ) I had to buy mens jeans at the weekend because I couldnt find and womens jeans that are a, long enough and b. that go above my hips! ( I really hate these hipster jeans! ) I feel like a freak because I have to look for trousers that are classed as LONG leg which by the way i'm lucky if they are more than a 32 inc leg!
grrrr
my rant over too :o)
60% of Americans are overweight and we put up with this bs? why?
WE'RE NOT GOING TO TAKE IT ANY MORE!!!
Why not have the freakin door open outwards, then there wouldn't be a problem?
All the other things I'm so completely and 150% with you girl!
and it is really hard to find shirts that fit. i am 5'10'' and 138lbs, so i either get a large that is long enough or too big, or a belly shirt that fits well......
who wants to start their own clothing line? lol
We always said we should open a clothing store that only caters to the two extremes. Average sized people can shop wherever the heck they want, the rest of us should have someplace too! :)
Clothes I so hate them. Everything that fits my massive hips has big baggy legs and I have to fold them 3 times so I don't trip all over myself. Button up shirts are evil! I'm a DDD cup so any button up shirt that "fits" pops buttons at the bust. If i get it to fit my bust it hangs to mid thigh and the sleeves hang 6" past my finger tips.
Being a sewing gal works out great I can heam here and tuck there but they still never fit right. Do you have any idea how hard it is to measure yourself? Some measurments are impossible! GAh! I say we start a Fatties 'r' Us clothing store with custom made to fit you clothes.
She does most all of her clothes shopping from Woman Within. This once was Lane Bryant and they have been designing clothing for large women for years.
Woman Within has a website and mail order catalogs. Check this out. My friend, Jane, is a professional woman and she is always stylishly dressed, even when going casual.
I have also ordered from Woman Within because I have a strange shape and needed "special" fit even before I gained the 50 pounds I am currently trying to lose. I have found their selections to be of good quality and actually better looking than they appear in the catalog. They carry everything, undies to coats and shoes.
As far as restrooms, try to wait for the handicapped stall if you can. That's what my friend does and she says it definitely helps.
Good luck!
I completely agree! I am 5'11 and 220lbs. In the UK i'm about a 16-18, though I can never find anything to fit well. I moved out to Hong Kong a year ago and there is NOTHING out here as everyone is 4'11 and has a 23 inch waist. I had a nurse laugh at me when i got on the scales in the doctors surgery because she'd never seen a women weigh as much as me. In the UK they'd be sacked for that, but out here its ok, because everyones tiny. A friend of mine has a chinese friend who was JEALOUS when she had an upset stomach, as she said thats her best way to lose weight - loads of people take laxatives out here to stay thin.
I even have some clothes made in China - they're good but they're not amazing, and uaually have to be taken in as they asume all western people are enormous. My mate is a UK size 10 and has to buy L OR XL clothes here.
In the UK long tall sally is pretty good - they do trousers up to 38in inside leg i think, but i'm pretty certain that size 18 is their biggest. i have found that you can be a smaller size in their purely because the clothes are tailored to people with long arms, long bodies, long legs etc...

Seriously? That's just sad. I don't think things should be changed to accomodate them just because they're becoming the majority, they should change..
also re: the bus/plane seats, they are small to fit more people...though I agree there's not much space between you and the seat ahead for me too (and I'm not as tall, 5'9).
Big as in too heavy/fat can be fixed and should be fixed.
I was 406.
Should the world change to accomidate me?
Absolutely NOT!!!
I can control me...so I should change. I have to take responsibility.
I'm 309 now and I know who's responsible for taking care of my BIG problem...me.
If I can do it anyone can.
100 more pounds to go!
Trainwreck, you have a great attitiude!
I'm 5'10 and started at 260 and I feel like a linebacker much of the time and perhaps some of it is in my head, but being "big" really takes its toll of me mentally. Getting through turnstiles, sitting on airplane seats, those frickin' bathroom stalls!! I have somewhat broad shoulders too, which does not help matters much. I once had a b'friend note that my shoulders were broader than his, especially when I wore this one particular jacket (hey it was the 80's!!) but that hurt and stuck with me, even though I only weighed 150 at the time. Losing weight will help me feel more feminine again, for sure.
Also, wanted to post this website for cute clothes: www.sizeappeal.com
I bought a CUTE brown guaze halter dress on this site!! And a couple of halter tops for Vegas trips.
Ok...I am 5'10 and right now 290...I have to completely disagree with everyone so far on this thread!! I mean I am dieting and wanting to lose weight, but for one, I dress very well. Infact I am constantly getting completments on how cute I look, or I wish I could dress like you, or pull that off. I have some of the most stylish clothes I know (granted I live in a smaller town in Ohio) but still! THere are soooo many stores out there that sell awesome plus size, and plus size junior clothes. I have to dress up at work, and I always look nice, and if I don't say so myself I look pretty trendy and good on the weekends as well. Even when going out to the clubs I can work some sexy outfits, I have guys hit on me alot, and just because I am plus size, I am not going to let it get me down. I a more top heavy...my boobs are very large, but I still pull off some awesome looks. Some stores I shop at are:
Debs, Fashion Bug, Lane Bryant, and one of my faves: Gabreille Brothers!! They are a store that has kinda close out prices and items from top name brand stores. (Baby Phat, which has plus size, along with Rockawear, Lane Brayant, Old Navy and Applebottom items!
Don't get frustrated...you have to make it work! And I really want to lose weight, but until I lose the weight I am making what I got work for me :) And you all should do the same too. Confiedence goes along way :)
