Really frustrated - Need some cheering up
Hi guys. I have been on here for about 5 weeks now, and have lost 12 lbs. I have been busting my butt every morning working out for at least an hour a day, 7 days a week and really watching what I'm eatting & staying at my recommended calorie intake. I just talked to my friend, who 5 weeks ago started taking Alli. She eats the same junk she always has, bacon, greasy cheeseburgers, frech fries, etc. Things I would never eat now. She goes to the gym maybe twice a week. She just told me she has lost 10 lbs and her clothes are getting much looser. This really frustrates me. I know she is my friend, but I was really hoping to be able to show her this can be done by watching what you eat and exercise, the healthy way. And I guess I was secretly hoping the Alli wouldn't be successful for her. Thats terrible, huh? Ughhh. :(
Tracy
She is using a crutch and not learning good eating habits.
good for you for doing it the right way.
no, its normal for you to feel the way you do. I almost feel the same.
First...Congratulations on the 12 pounds in 5 weeks. That is great!
Second, don't let your friend's "success" get you down. Know that you are doing it the healthy way and you are so much more likely to keep it off and benefit health-wise in every way just because of how you're losing.
I took some herbal diet pills back some years ago and lost 70 pounds. I developed a very bad thyroid problem. I feel it contributed to the heart problem I have now too AND to top it off I gained all that weight right back. So not only was I heavy all over again but in a much worse state than ever.
I don't want to jinx your friend but know that watching your calories, nutrition and staying active will not contribute to or create health issues. That by doing it this way will only benefit your health (and weight).
A.) She is lying to you about how much she has lost because:
1.) She would *most likely* have nasty oil discharge from her butt everyday if she was REALLY eating all those things. I guess she didn't want to mention that?
2.) She want to succeed so badly with out doing any work that she wants to "prove you wrong".
and
B.) When she reaches her goal weight, and stops taking Alli, what do you think will happen as she continues to eat the same food? That's right, she's going to gain it all back and ruin her body.
YOU on the otherhand will reach your goal and continue to exercise and eat healthy to maintain your new weight.
It really doesn't matter "how fast" or "how well" someone else is doing. She will realize one way or the other that losing weight and maintaining a healthy weight do not come from pills, it comes from hard work and a healthy lifestyle.
Thanks guys for the comments!
According to her she hasn't had any "accidents or explosions". I know I wouldn't want to chance that and I know in my heart I am doing it the right way. It's just frustrating to have her brag about her loss when the right way is so much harder.
Thanks again....
Tracy
I don't think she is being truthful to you. If she was eating greasy cheeseburgers she would be very ill.
You have lost 12. She has lost 10. If it is a competition then you are ahead by 2 pounds.
You guys are so great! I'm really glad I found this site. All your comments are making me feel better. I know its so stupid to even let it bother me. I will just keep doing what I am doing, I am really proud of myself for how I've done so far.

What on earth is Alli?
I know you mainly just needed to vent, but I'm gonna throw in my opinion, anyway. :)
Ok, maybe Alli really is some kind of miracle pill that's making your friend lose a bunch of weight without really trying. I very seriously doubt it, but there's always that possibility.
But more likely, all that she's lost is water weight. Water weight loss is temporary and will slack off once her body adjusts to the change. Not to mention she's still eating too much junk and apparently not working out enough to burn it back off. That will catch up to her eventually, too.
You, however, are making the effort to eat right and exercise. You might lose weight at a slower pace because of the exercise - you may be losing fat but gaining muscle, which is good! What your friend is getting is a temporary "fix." What you are doing is a method that's proven to work and keep the weight off.
The true test will be comparing you and your friend in six months or a year from now, and see who's looking fit and gorgeous, and who's looking ... the same as they do right now (or worse.) ;)
Keep up the good work, and most importantly, don't do this for anyone but YOU. YOU can do it! :)
Thanks Elaine.
Alli is the new FDA approved diet drug. It claims that if you eat a healthy diet and take the pill it will help you to loose 50% more weight than you typically will without the pill. It can have some pretty gross side effects, etc.
One friend said, "she is learning NOT to eat greasy food" so therefore she will keep the weight off when she quits taking Alli.
I don't agree, as, personally, my weight didn't come from grease, it was sugar/carbs/inactivity...........things I've learned to control here.
Hey next time she brags about it, just tell her to wait and see where either of you is in a year.............I am going to bet you that you are the one that's going to laugh, BIG TIME !!!!!
Keep up the GOOD work, you are on the RIGHT path, I don't even see what point she is trying to make !
Thanks Laura. What a nice post.
Geez, I really didn't want to ask for the support in this way, but boy does it make me feel better.

Tracy,
Congrats on the weight loss! Since you are going to the gym, you are also toning and building muscle, which weighs a lot more than fat!! Also, she may get skinny, but still have soft muscles. You will have nice tone, tight muscles!! It's hard not to get frustrated sometimes, just remember, you are doing a great job!!! Keep up the good work! Love, Lara
well done! 12lbs is great! i wish i could loose 12lbs! just remember that at leat you will be healthy! your friend may be loosing weight, but not in a healthy way! keep up the good work, and reap the rewards!
Love Loren x
ps-dont worry about not wanting Alli to work for her! my seriously skinny friend went on a diet and i was like "PLEEEASSE GOD DONT LET HER LOOSE ANYMORE WEIGHT!" :)
100% in agreement with everyone here...
The benefits of your approach: better muscle tone, clearer skin, healthier GI tract, more energy, and easier maintenance once you're at your target weight.
Most importantly, you've lost 12 pounds! Even if everyone in the WORLD lost more weight than you, it doesn't change the fact that YOU weigh 12 pounds less than you did 5 weeks ago!
