full fat yogurt -- need support
hi all
my GP was about to send me to hospital today . i have a BMI of 15.8
i cried and said i would do it all at home i promised
she agreed and set out a vague meal plan, including a tub of full fat yoghurt a day. she said skim yoghurt is no good for me. WHY? i love skim and actually hate the taste of full fat
im petrifed to eat the full fat, but she said it may be the difference between hospital and not hospital
SUPPORT NEEDED plss
Please, give it a go. If not just for you, for your family and friends - just think how worried they would be if you went into hospital.
Have you tried mixing the yoghurt in with other recipes? They're pretty nice in smoothies.
Good luck, you can overcome this.
You need fats in general... full-fat dairy products are just one example. Others would be avocados, nuts, nut butters, seeds, olive oil, oily fish, red meats. Fats are an excellent way to quickly increase your calorie intake and that's why you've been asked to eat more of them.... they need to you gain weight. Skimmed dairy products are a good choice for most people, but not for the severely underweight.
Do follow the instructions you've been given very, very carefully. It's no good promising to comply and then changing your mind. You are dangerously underweight at the moment i.e. your life is at risk. If you struggle in the slightest to increase your intake as advised then you really would be much better off in a hospital setting.
thanks for ur suuport
i ate so much full fat vanilla yoghurt, i feel a little ill
it tastes kind of ok i guess, but i still prefer the low fat taste
what do u think about gettin one with "reduced fat"??????? instead of NO fat?
i dont no , its just so hard
and nuts are a fear food that i hav to eat lots of too :(
IT IS ONLY AS HARD AS YOU MAKE IT.
From the sounds of it I think you should seriously take the hospital offer. There are girls and guys out there that would JUMP at the chance to go into a hospital and get the help they want and need. No reduced fat, no half-arsing, no cheating your doctor. Your doctor is your doctor because they are a QUALIFIED professional that really know better than your disordered mind will do right now. Nuts are also full of healthy fats that, like Jane has said, will help your body rebuild. You NEED those. Unless you would prefer to keel over which, at your weight, is quite viable. I know those with higher BMIs than you that have suffered heart attacks. A young lady who attended my former clinic died at a BMI of about 17.5 - do you want that be you?
Seriously, look into inpatient. Sometimes losing a couple of months of your life to get the rest of it back is worth it.
I would stick to the full fat for a bit. After a few days you will get use to it.
Try the Balkan or Greek yogurt and use it like sour cream on your baked potatoes or as a veggie dip (just add some onion soup mix to it).
Why are nuts a fear food for you? They are loaded with good fats.
If you think that something is going to be hard, then it will be. If you can change your thought process to this is going to be fun and something new, it will be a little easier. Think of it as an adventure, trying different foods is fun.
Oohhh, I think you should follow the plan exactly. If you find yourself fudging, even a teeny bit, go to the hospital. You would probably be better off there, they'd help you do what you have to do. I don't know if your GP would know how resistant you are to gaining. Hope you get well.

Let's face it, your hatred of the full fat yogurt is a cover for the fact that eating it scares the bejesus out of you. The same way nuts do. And the same way likely MOST foods that aren't on your "safe" list do. Overcoming this kind of thinking is hard, and it generally requires professional help. You can sit there and say you're going to make the changes. Heck, you may even force down the full fat yogurt for a day or so. But before long (already, it seems), you're going to be justifying the reduced fat instead and making up excuses for why you should go back to eating the way you were that got you to your 15.8 BMI to begin with. This has nothing to do with the yogurt and EVERYTHING to do with your disordered eating.
Please take up the offer of professional help. Eating disorders rob you of so many things--your health, happiness, a regular life, healthy skin/nails/hair, and even potentially your ability to have children one day. It's not worth it. Don't you miss the days when you could go out to dinner with your family or friends without going into panic attacks all day long about what you will order and how many calories it might have?
Hi Lilli,
If you are afraid of the foods you need to eat to get healthy, I think you might want to go to the hospital for a bit to get some suggestions from a professional on how to diminish your fears.
We are amateurs on this site and since we don't know the intimate details of your life etc.... you should seek the advise of someone who can get the entire story and help you.
Good luck to you.. I wish I could send over a few of my extra pounds for you...lol
I'm sure you will do well in your goal.. hang in there
Hey Lil,
Please, please, please get some help.
I completely agree with dc_runner81. You have got to a dangerously low bmi and the reasons that got you there are not going to go away by eating a pot of yoghurt a day. You really will need profesional help with this one i'm afraid hun. You need to re-program your attitude towards food and you will not be able to do that by yourself.
If you can muster the courage to get the help and accept that your current logic is not rational, there may be hope of making you better and returning you back to the daughter/sister/grand daughter/best friend that i'm sure all those around you are desperate for you to be again.
I lost my nan a couple of years ago to annorexia and she had a bmi of 16.
Even reading this is making me cry!
Please get some help lovely. XXX
Try and focus on positive aspects of eating these foods...yoghurt and nuts are great for your skin! avocados are fab too! Hope you get well soon and continue on the road to recovery with the help and advice of your doctor and whatever kind of support you need on here. Keep positive and take positive steps to helping yourself get healthy and again. xxxxxxx
lillyla: i agree with some of the above posts especialy where they mentioned that your hatred toward full fat yogurt is part of the eating disorder. This may not be true though but if you really cant stand the taste of it then dont eat it plain.
some suggestions would be to buy plain full fat yogurt and add things to it like vanilla, brown sugar, regular sugar, honey, berries, sprinkles to make it pretty lol, cookies, granola, cereal, graham crackers, crumble up a power bar/ granola barmy personal favorite is crumbling up a quaker true delight bar((the dark chocolate rasberry almond one...so yummy!)) and all those add great flavors and mask the flavor of the yogurt itself
also you could you it as a dip for practically anything...smoothies are great ideas!! ive never personally made a smoothie with yogurt though..mine consist of vanilla ice cream, frozzen strawberries, banana, honey, milk, ice, and vanilla extract. But you could use some yogurt in place of a little bit of the ice cream or milk probably you know.
you really need the full fat stuff right now to repair your body. I know it seems unneccessary right now but you will thank the high fat foods when you healthy again. and yes fats do improve your hair/skin etc. please stick to your doc's meal plan and eat more of the foods suggested by the other posts...you need to get healthy again!!!
yeah im going with the harsh approach of LALA and DC-RUNNER.
if you say you dont like full fat taste you're full of crap. every ED sufferer in the world (me included)knows is just a way of facilitating your disease. i think its a silly idea to turn down medical help. clearly if the opportunity for help is there i would think taking it is a good move
how much of the agreed meal plan have you eaten?
wow
thanks everyone
i think i needed all those harsh comments
i made a smoothie this morning using the yoghurt and mollasses ( i have to have this for some reason also) and icecream and bannana and ice. it was so yummy
i ENJOYED it
i ate some macadamia nuts also
and they are kind of yummy
thanks for ur support, i know i can do this and if i feel myself falling off the rails again, i might go back to doc and see what can happen.
im going out for diner with mum tonight and i dont want to look at the website and plan and calculate my meal like normal - i shall go and choose what i want to eat when im there. i may even have pizza ( used to love it, havnt had it for 3 years)

mollasses
Molasses are rich in quite a lot of nutrients... iron, maganese, calcium... and are an unrefined sugar source so very good for getting energy (calories) into your body fast. As kids my brother and I were given a big tablespoon of molasses every morning ... to make us 'big and strong'. Now that you've tried macadamia nuts have a go at some almonds, cashews and pistachios... lots of different flavours there. Pizza is a great food.... a balanced meal of carbohydrates (bread base), some vegetables (tomatoes, peppers, mushrooms) and usually plenty of protein and fat (cheese, meats)... Enjoy.
Glad that you're approaching this more positively. It's the only way to succeed.

*WHOOP-WHOOP!!!* Good luck honey. XXX
Awesome! Did you go out to dinner? Did you order whatever on the menu sounded good at the time? Didn't it feel amazing?!?
yess i did go out for dinner and it was goood!
i started off by saying "no thanks" to bread and butter and then told myself I was naughty and called the waiter back (i actually love bread and butter)
mum said we could order starters, main and dessert. this made me panick, but i was able to relax myself and remember that i am MEE
i ordered jellyfish and butterfish rolls for starters -- so yumm. they were reasonably healthy, but still, the extra calories would have scared me previously!
mains i ordered a lovelyy crispy grilled barramundi with tapanade sauce. delish. and a salad that had PEANUTS (this was hard for me, but i did it)
dessert was tough. i started off sayin i was full but mum insisted (she is not a great dessert person and i new she was only doing it for me, she NEVER orders dessert herself)
we both ordered seperate desserts (have only ever shared a dessert, and that has happened about ONCE or twice in the whole 3 years :(
i got a cheescake and mum got a selection of icecreams
it was yummmoo. afterwards i had the worst guilty feeling ever (adding up possible calories ) and i just tried and tried to block it all out
i think it was worth it :)
i didnt restrict the next day either!
i think im getting better, but i still have SO many nasty thoughts and feeling so greedy stuffin my face all the time :(
more support would be much appreciated guys. you always make me smile :)
So glad to read how you're doing. Keep it up. It will just keep getting better if you continue to eat. Nice to hear you're on the road to health. Remember, it's not only ok to eat, it's what you need to do.
Good Luck!
thanks katonick :)
if there is anyone out there struggling/pushing through with anorexia recovery please feel free to send me a message! i would love to share feelings and have a motivation budy :)
That's really awesome, lillyla, what a great start!
