i just wanted to say its funny on all the fear foods, no one ever writes apples, and friends i speak to who are anorexic, recovering, recovered....all types have always found apples to be a safe food for them, its just silly, why does someone say i only eat 1 apple and not something to the complete equivalent...oh wait now i opened up that people might be afraid of them, personally they are the best and if it wernt for apples there was a time i would have been eating next to nothing if it wernt for my apples
I would say that it's a common social tradition to consider the apple a "healthy" food. That's probably why people consider them to be safe. "An apple a day keeps the doctor away". Well, the reality is, it takes more than just one apple a day to stay healthy. There are many other healthy and nutritious foods.
Yeah, I agree with tangerine89. Alot of things that I ended up restricting were things that others around me had referred to as "bad" or "unhealthy," and I avoided them because eating them triggered anxiety and guilt. However, I was never afraid of anyone saying something bad about me eating foods like apples, so they've always remained a "safe-food" for me. Plus, they can feel pretty filling if your body has gotten used to having next to nothing, and I've read that the fiber within can help suppress the appetite. It can really mess with your digestion though, because after a while I remember how bloated and gassy (yeah, really gross and embarassing...) I'd get sometimes. Ugh, I always cringe whenever I read about those "all-fruit-diets" that people try to go on...ITS SO BAD FOR YOU IN SO MANY WAYS; NEVER TRY IT!
For some reason, when I went through the worst extent of my ED, I wouldn't touch apples. I considered them a "high cal" fruit :S I would only eat stuff like strawberries lol. Now that is disordered eating D:

Don't get to eat them much now cos of my braces, I have to chop them to eat them.
yeah Dolly I was the same - I would only eat berries or melon. I eat apples now, but honestly I prefer really hard pears haha.
apples were one of the only things i did eat. I lived off apples and salad and sometimes a bit of tuna. Wow what an idiot i was
yep in the worst parts of ED, my fruit list only consisted of options >60 calories, and all my veggies had to be >25.
so i lived off of berries, cantelope, clementines, peaches, that sort of thing. an apple was a sin, and a banana... DONT EVEN GO THERE! lol
i guess it just depends on the extent of your ED and its insane "rules". like i had 2 taco bell spicy chicken tacos everynight for dinner, idk why, but i did. ED is wierd and just doesnt make sense! lol
Like Dolly, apples were weird for me too. Normal eating apples were off the list because for some strange reason they seem to make me hungry! And I considered them too high cal. However, stewed apple is one of the things that I ate tons of because it's not so sweet so had less calories. Love stewed apple - ultimate wintery comfort food!
I avoided apples because they were "too high-cal" and I would rather have a vegetable instead, but I would eat a Clif Bar (about 250 calories) every night. 0_o
how strange, apples were and still are a very safe food for me. Not to mention the most delicious things ever! But yea, it was bad when I'd eat almost nothing but salad and apples. Now I load mine with pb :)
Another benefit is that yes, i do get hungry pretty soon after eating an apple, so that helps in recovering. Especially when i'm busy with work, or traveling, say i'm hungry but know we're going out to dinner in 30 min or we have to postpone a meal (which happens a lot trying to coordinate my eating habits with my parents!) it's really easy to pull out an apple and still be hungry for dinner.
dolly - i was the opposite! I would eat apples, but not touch berries.. because i thought sugar was worse.........we had ED ear-goggles on too i gues x
hmmm...apples were a safe food for me to eat too when I had an ED. It's funny now that I look back on it, but I couldn't eat any other fruit except for apples--not even oranges or grapefruit, which I used to love. Last year when I started to get better a coworker of mine gave me some strawberries to have & at first I was going to throw them out, but I told myself it was just a strawberry, it wasn't going to hurt me, and boy did it taste delicious! Thank goodness I have gotten over that fear :)
wow funny how this is, not really surprised by the reation, some days i eat 5 apples in addition to my other food, yesterday i ate two tangerines, its been like 6 months for me on that, ha free food strikes again, and today i ate half a banana, for some reason i told myself i can have a banana only if i work out because i need the potasium so my legs wont cramp up. I ate grapes a bit back, but i felt so guilty i would rather eat apples only. i work at a school and we feed the kids lots of fruit, so often i will eat the left overs cause i can not resist free fruit
