Did i really gain 4 lbs in a week???

Quote  |  Reply

I am on trying to gain weight, but i was hoping the process wouldnt be so overwhelming. Do you think i really gained 4 lbs in 1 week by eating around 2000 calories? I drink lots of water during the day  (10-12 glasses +) and at night so i dont think i'd really be reataining water, or could it be.

This sudden weight jump is so triggering. I feel like i need to restrict.

Please help.

I'm definitely not an expert but it is possible.  One thing to consider is that your weight is going to fluctuate throughout the day. I've been told that it is a good idea to weigh yourself at the same time every day so you are getting an accurate read on things.  Also - 2000 calories a day may possibly be too high for you depending on your BMI.

While this website is a great tool for managing your weight it sounds as though you are dealing with a real eating disorder so the absolute best thing you could do for yourself is get a diet plan from a real live nutritionist that you can discuss these things with.

The sheer fact that you've acknowledged having a problem is the absolute best sign that you are going in the right direction.

Good luck!

If you're trying to gain weight, 2000 calories is definitely not too high. When I was in treatment, I was eating more than that just to maintain.

I'm not sure what your calorie intake was before, but if you've increased your calories by a fair amount, then you could be seeing food weight as well.

I agree with the above poster that said it would be worthwhile to see a dietician. I think that would be really helpful for you .

How would i know if it is too much for my bmi??

http://apps.nccd.cdc.gov/dnpabmi/Calculator.a spx according to the calculator for teens & children on this website, my bmi is 16.3

At 16.3 BMI you are underweight which you know because you are trying to gain weight.  2000 calories per day is not enough to have you gain 4 lbs in a week, most of that is probably water retention and the weight of unprocessed food.  It takes ~3500 extra calories to gain a pound.  If you're struggling with an eating disorder or signs of disordered eating I highly recommend that you seek professional help from a nutritionist and therapist who specialize in the field.

I also recommend reading through the thread Eating Disorders Information that our members and moderators put together.

Use the calculators appropriate for your age to determine how many calories you burn per day with your exercise level and eat another 500-1000 calories per day to gain ~1-2 pounds per week.
