Should I gain, maintain or lose?

Quote  |  Reply

I honestly don't have a clue if my weight is healthy, under or over. I mean I look okay, maybe a bit above average, but not like fat or anything.

I'm 107 lbs, 5'3 and 13 years old.

Should I lose any weight? Gain? Or just stay the same?

Thanks!

Definitely do NOT lose! You are by no means overweight or above average. As long as you are eating enough calories, the weight you are at now is probably pretty healthy--a little on the low side, perhaps, but then again you're only 13. You're still growing and developing, so it's natural that you should gain a little more weight as you get older, so don't fight it! Just eat when you hungry, stop when you're full (at least 1800 I'd say, more if you're active at all), and enjoy everything in moderation, and it's very unlikely that you'll end up at anything other than a healthy weight.

your weight is PERFECTLY healthy, even a bit on the lower side if anything. make sure you're fueling your body appropriately and getting physical activity. balance is key. don't worry about calories. eat when you're hungry and stop when you're full. don't worry about the scale. this is of course if you have no history with EDs or dieting.

Simple answer is to enter your stats into the above chart. You'll find that you're right in the middle of a healthy weight for your height & age.   Dead average - not below or above.  You'll also see from the 'Daily Energy Requirements' that, if you're reasonably active, you need plenty to eat because your body has a lot of growing and developing to do... another 8 years of it, in fact.  So you're not going to 'stay the same'.

Rather than thinking about body-weight or calories how about you think more about developing a healthy lifestyle?  Regular activity, regular meals and a healthy diet will serve you very well in the long term.  If you're not sure what a healthy diet looks like this website has some excellent ideas  http://www.eatwell.gov.uk/agesandstages/teens /  and no calorie-counting involved at all.

I'm no doctor or expert, but when I was your age, I weighed a little over a 100 pounds at 5 feet tall.  It can be difficult to get accurate messages about what is healthy, unhealthy and attractive in this day and age, so be very careful about the advice you take.  This website recommended that I lose 20 more pounds than I wanted -- which would put me at 102 pounds, but I felt that was a little extreme considering my age.

Along with some of the recommendations made by the members of this site, I also recommend that you pose this question to your family doctor.  Your doctor can determine if you need more or fewer nutrients than you already eat.

hi! my stats are almost exactly the same as yours: i'm 5'3", 108 lbs, and 16 y/o.

i was at 112 at one point, and still was definitely not fat, but decided I was happier about my body at 108. my original goal weight had been 105, and i was at 104 for awhile, but my friends told me i looked better at 108 and it seemed like that was where my body wanted to be anyway.

so basically it sounds like you should maintain right where you are :)

'Maintain' is not an appropriate/realistic ambition for someone who is 13 and who's body is naturally going to grow over the next 6 - 8 years.  The OP has to expect and plan for getting heavier.   And so should you.
