Will I gain? Probably stupid, but...
I'm a little worry wart. Ha.
I'm currently trying to maintain my weight. (obviously, why I'm posting here.)
Now here's the deal..I went to the gym yesterday for about 2 hours and by the end of the day I had about a 768 cal deficit.
To make up for the deficit this morning I had my usual breakfast, plus a big a** bagel from a NY deli (I guessed it to be about 640 cals...500 for the bagel and about 140 for the low fat cream cheese, which I did scrape some off.) I figured this would makeup for the deficit, however I did lose a pound this morning, so I don't know if my deficit went away when I lost that pound. (I fluctuate about 3 pounds throughout the week sometimes.)
Today I still plan on eating all my meals and such with that one bagel included...which will bring me to about 2000 cals when my maintenance number is about 1430. (I'm taking a break from exercise today as well since my legs are a little stiff. :/)
Now my question is, will I gain weight, or since I had that deficit yesterday, other then sodium will my weight balance out?
I'm just curious, thanks in advance and sorry if this is a beyond stupid question. :P
Damn me for being such a worry wart. Heh.
;)

No-one 'maintains' on 1430.... unless the weight they are maintaining is 'underweight'. 2000 is the typical maintenance requirement of a lightly active adult woman. That's what you should be getting every day.... there or thereabouts.
Sorry Jane, I only got 1430 cals because that's what CC is telling me what it is, so I hold it as a reliable source.
I'm not very active, I use to be, going to the gym yesterday was a struggle in itself I'm lucky if I work out once a week so I just consider myself sedentary and if I work out I log it in.
Either way, thank you for your response.
I think that maintenance number might be a bit iffy too.. I maintained 100 pounds on 1600 calories with NO exercise.. are you sure that's accurate? /:
Actually GI Jane for very small women maintenance numbers can be quite low. I'm 4'11" and currently 115 pounds and young (19 years old) and if I were sedentary my maintenance number would be 1500 calories. To lose weight I need to eat 1500 (under 21 minimum) and then exercise the rest off. I had a professional metabolism test. 2000 calories isn't right for everyone just like 1200 calories isn't right for everyone. 2000 is just an average. My maintenance now is currently 2200 (which I've calculated by keeping very very good track of my calories and average deficits) and I work out at least 1 hour 6 days a week.
edit: to answer the OP - weight gain and loss is based on average. Heck, plenty of people naturally maintain healthy weights without ever even learning what a calorie is. Do those people eat the same number of calories everyday? No. Some days they cut back and some days they indulge - it's all part of a natural cycle. If a person eats too much one day they may just think of it as being "less hungry" the next day. As long as you're not radically switching between undereating and binging it's just a natural way to eat. People who eat very irregularly (800 calories on day, 3000 the next, and so on) may experience weight gain but neither 1400 or 2000 calories is ridiculously high or low number.
Thanks guys!
I've always thought my maintenance was a little low. I've checked other sites and they usually say it's around 1600, but I just kept my faith with CC. Maybe I should e-mail them.
I am pretty short I'm almost 5'3. And I am over 21 (I'm 22 will be 23 in December.)
Lafoutloud01...thanks for your points, you're right we do tend to eat less or more on days. I think I've just become so OCDic with using the site and it's calories that now I just base it on that. I've been doing it for so long that now it's kind of a habit, but what you said is true I will keep it in mind.
Once again thanks to all who have answered. :)
what is your current weight? if you are in fact maintaining on 1430 calories i suspect that your weight is probably lower than it should be for someone your height.
if you ate 60 bagels, then, yes, you'd gain weight. anything shy of that, you'll be good. however, the fact that you were at the gym for two hours one day and then having anxiety about eating a bagel the next suggests that in other ways things may not be fine. if this incident is typical for you, you may want to look into getting some professional support.
I'm not trying to be rude, only honest here, but honestly what does my weight or even maintenance number have to do with my original question? I really find it is no ones business what my current weight is (which it is not unhealthy, may I add, as I have talked to a nutritionist. I've been unhealthy in the past and I know what it looks like and it sure as hell isn't what I am now!)
My original question was basically just a foundation on science and how deficits work for future reference at maintaining. Such as if you lose a pound, does your deficits start over?
I will admit I have struggled with EDs in the past, but I have come a long, long way. The voice sometimes lurks, but I've fought hard against it and I am damn proud for it. I just struggle with depression and anxiety, PERIOD. Either way, I do THANK those who have answered me and I DO appreciate it. I just don't get how a simple question turns into a lecture or weight accusations. It was a simple, honest question and I guess I had gotten my answer along with a bunch of other stuff.
Thank you again. :)
bc if ur weight is too low for ur height, then ur "maintenance" amount will be a low number, like what u stated it to be
As I stated it apparently isn't according to a professional I have seen...yes it is on the lower end for my height, but I am well over 100 pounds. It certainly isn't life threateningly unhealthy and no I do not starve myself ,purge, any of the other stuff that is tied in with an ED. I have my period without BC, etc. I eat to maintenance, I try to work out when I can (and eat back the calories.), If I have a deficit I obviously eat it back as evidence of the original post. If there is any weight loss or gain it is unintentional.
I am curious about the number though as like I have said other sites have me down at 1600 some odd calories and this one has me lower, but I'm trusting it...for now.
im ur height and at my weight-which i considar to be UNHEALTHY and am currently trying to GAIN, i maintain on around 1800, my bmi is 18.9 so take it for what its worth, i think id feel best at 120 and aboce tho.
The OP is clearly undereating and underweight.... This thread should be locked.

If eating 1430 -whatever number my workouts register as is under eating then so be it..if you ask me it's a load of B.S.
Like I said, I sought out guidance from a PROFESSIONAL. This is just another example of a simple post getting into an argument.
I do NOT promote starvation diets or anything ED related. I, in fact, support people who are in recovery for it to keep striving strong towards a healthier life style because I've been through that hell years back and I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. so keep flying the insults and being immature because stating such false claims when you clearly do not know me as a person or all of the facts is uncalled for and innapropriate.
I'm done with this post as I have clearly gotten an answer already (thanks again to those who actually answered my question), but other then that, this is complete bull crap that once again, went too far.
My apologizes to the other members of CC who had to read through all of this.
the fact is hard though it may be you are undeweight and you need to gain , you have my support in this but not to maintain. while ever you are trying to maintain an unhealthy weight you will face problems . its the ed thats telling you to maintain dont listen h x
I just looked at all your pictures,
In my opinion, you do look healthy in the pictures/ you do not look bony or unnaturally thin.
However, I am not an expert, and I could be wrong! Pictures can be deceiving.
And some people may look healthy at weights that are still too low for them
One thing I DO know, is that 1430 calories is a VERY LOW amount for a women of normal height…
Unless they are trying to lose weight.
Your height is VERY RELEVENT to this thread,
Because 1430 calories is not enough for most women unless they are short.
So people asked about your weight, so they could know if you are eating enough calories for your weight/height.
I have read about several people who found that although they only maintained on a low number of calories - they actually STILL maintained on a HIGHER number…..
Because their metabolisms only maintained their weight on such a low amount of cals because their bodies were conversing the calories..
So if you eat more than 1430, you may find that your body and metabolism are happy/work better and you maintain on more calories.
That is if you NEED more calories - which depends on your height, which you have not disclosed!
In response to your ORIGINAL POST:
A deficit of 700 calories, on a one off occasion, has never made a difference to me personally….
If it is a one off occasion, even 1000 calories too little or too many has not made a diff.
Although, it is possible that this has been the case for me, because I have naturally just eaten more/less over time, to maintain my weight.. So I could have naturally compensated for any increase/decrease in calories.
