How do I gain support from my family in my dieting efforts?
Asked by anonymous on May 19, 2010 in Family & Pregnancy

My dad insists on frying chicken and cooking heavy, starchy meals on a daily basis. He takes food very personally, as do I, and anytime I say I don't want to eat what he's cooked, he becomes offended. Also, anytime I mention dieting, he cooks my favorite high caloric Southern meal. He could stand to eat much healthier & I want my efforts to rub off on him. How do I go about changing his ways or, at least, having him support mine?

Answer

No one can change anyone else; you can only change yourself.  Bring healthy vegetables, fruit salads and soup into the home, along with whole grain breads and any healthy food you like.  You can eat your food and offer to share it with the others. and, if you'd like, you can eat a small portion of the family's high calorie food and savor it because it is rich.  And then, take good care of yourself and set a good example. You will be a good influence on your own family in the future.
