How can I gain weight while breastfeeding?
Asked by anonymous on Jan 28, 2009 in Weight Maintenance

I am breastfeeding, and I keep losing weight.  How can I turn this around and put on healthy weight?

Answer

Breastfeeding raises your calorie requirements by 500 a day. To prevent further weight loss, you, personally, need to eat at least 2300 calories.  But to gain weight, you will need 2600 calories or more.  Eat three meals and nosh throughout the day.  Drink high-calorie liquids like milk, fruit juice, and meal replacement drinks.  Eat from every food group to get a full complement of nutrients.  Choose dairy products, vegetable oils, nuts, eggs, meat, grain, and fresh fruit and vegetables.  Learn about eating during lactation at My Pyramid for Pregnancy and Breastfeeding.
