Will I gain weight in one day if I go off of my strict diet?
Asked by anonymous on Aug 22, 2008 in Eating Disorders

I’m trying to recover from being anorexic and it’s a long and hard process.  I have trouble getting myself to eat certain foods that I don’t normally eat to get back into the swing of things and fully recover. I can’t get myself to eat it because there’s a voice in my head telling me I will gain weight. If I do eat something one day that has more calories and slightly unhealthy, will I gain a pound the next day or will it take a while to gain?

Answer

It is difficult to predict the rate of weight gain because of fluid shifts and individual differences.  I hope you are under the care of a mental health therapist and a dietitian because recovery is difficult.  Going off of your eating plan isn’t an option, and gaining weight is the goal.  When you find yourself ruminating, tell the voice in your head, “STOP!”  Read more about “thought stopping” techniques from the Guide to Mental Health at About.com.
