I GAINED weight! Someone please tell me it is muscle and/or normal!

I have been doing this for 2 weeks - treadmill 5 times a week plus ab crunches; trying to get calories to 1400 or so... and I started at 153 and now I am 156! Other than water weight, do you ever gain before you lose? And when will the losing kick in? I am afraid I will lose my willpower and quit if I don't see some results! Thanks everyone!

I feel the same exact way! I have been exercising like crazy.I am dropping calories and ranging from 1300 to 1400 and I am gaining weight 2 pounds just this week. I am hoping someone replies with the yes it's normal and then we start loosing.  Good Luck and don't get discouraged.

Maybe it's muscle mass? Did you increase your caloric intake? Your body's probably trying to get used to your new lifestyle. The extra weight should go away pretty soon.

I also just started gym programme and have gained 4 pounds despite dropping calories way down from what i was eating before. Now averaging between 1300- 1360 cals.

Getting discouraged as gaining a pound a day!

It's okay. I've seen this before. Lol.

With your up in exercise, it's entirely possible that it's muscle mass, in which case the new muscle will need to feed off your fat, so that's a good thing.

Also... and this is the kicker, when my mom started weight watchers, she followed it to the letter and gained about 8 lbs in her first month. It wasn't that she was doing it wrong or that it didn't work, it was her body noticing the TYPE of food she was eating in what quantity. It had been so long since she ate healthy that her body decided it should store some of that before she stopped eating that way again. After it got used to her new diet, she dropped weight really fast for a while before is paced out to a steady, constant loss. Granted, she ate cake more than anything else before that, so her body responded immediately. Chances are that you're not going to gain as much and the lbs should melt off soonly.

It's okay, I promise.

Thank you everyone for the comments and it's nice to know other people are experiencing the same thing and that there's a light at the end of the tunnel! I'm going to stick with it. Even though I gained, my boyfriend just said last night that my waist looked smaller. Maybe he's just saying that, but I do FEEL better. Thanks!!
