Lately my mom has been nagging me to go exercise or cut off more foods. (She says she has got nightmares about me and my big fat lower half of my body) So I finally managed to get off my lazy butt a few days ago and started exercising again while watching what I'm eating but ever since I started doing that I've been basically gaining a pound everyday! What the hell is happening?! I want to LOSE weight not GAIN. -____-''

how much are you trying to lose?
what are your stats?
what are you eating?
are you doing weights and cardio? how often are you excercizing?
It is going to take more than a couple of days to see progress...just keep up the good work and dont worry so much!

I usually gain a few pounds after I increase exercise so maybe it is the same for  you?  I now weigh myself only once a week so I do not focus on the day to day fluctuations.

You are doing all the right things so keep to your plan - eat a balanced diet, record your calories, and keep exercising - the weight will come off!  Don't forget to drink 8 glasses of water too!

Keep us posted.

I'm not really positive on how much I want to lose, but basically I just want to lose some of the fat on my lower body, especially my tummy which hangs out like crazy.
I still rememberly clearly by the end of grade 7 I was only 69 pounds and I was REALLY active. But once high school came around, BAM!
I'm in grade 11 now, around 5'3 and 110. So I guess I gained 41 pounds in less than 4 years. Ouch. It might sound like a good weight or underweight or whatever but looking at my figure, it sure doesn't look healthy at all.
I eat NONSTOP literally, I probably consume more than 5000++ calories a DAY, and I just sit all day in front of the computer. I guess thats the cause for the fatty lower body. (And btw, my upper half of my body starting from the ribs is.. uh, lets just say I'm pretty flat.. it'd be nice if I could pull out some fat from my lower body and place it onto my upper body..)
I've cutted out junk and such completely and eating healthy small meals every few hours instead of 3 LARRRGEEEE meals a day.
And I've been riding a stationary bike at home, and doing other stuff like hula hooping, jumping rope, situps, pushups, some weights and stuff like that. I've been exercising for more than an hour everyday so far, but I only started a few days ago so yeah. But my weight is like.. boooosting!

THANKS REFOC & MARYPOP! <3
5'3" and 110 pounds is classified as underweight.  Shame on your mother for putting such negative body image thoughts in your head!

You should focus more on toning and eating healthy, and don't try to lose weight.  Whatever you do, as a growing person, do not go under 1200 calories per day.  Teens need a heck of a lot more calories and nutrients than fully grown adults.  I think 1200 calories at your activity level is still way too low, even.

Your weight is just fine, even a little light.  Go for toning and muscle, not weight loss.

THANK YOU NYADOIO. :D

Yeah thats what I've been getting from people a lot too. But from our family genes, we have teeny tiny frames so yeah. And I can't blame my mother also, since she's only hanging around 118 pounds. She's a bit taller than me but our thighs and calves are exactly the same, she claims we can share pants now. I don't like that. -.-''
I'm pretty sure I don't go under 1200 calories a day, I'm probably more around the 2000 calories a day. =\

Soo.. losing fat = not weight loss?
I'm always so confused when it comes to things like this.
Can anyone recommend any goood toning and muscle exercises? :]
hyun, i have pretty much exactly the same stats as you (except you're still growing).

definitely exercise! i'm getting some very good results from regular exercise and eating around 1600 on days i exercise.

you DON'T need to lose pounds. forget about the number on the scale and focus your fitness. get a body fat percentage test if possible. you might find that that is a the problem (as it is for me)

losing FAT is what you should focus on, losing WEIGHT is not, you are exactly right.

try doing full body weights around 3 times a week and 30-45 minutes of cardio 3-5 times a week. if you have a gym near you, that would be useful, but there are plenty of exercises you can do at home using your own weight. :)

lastly, don't think of yourself as fat... the number on the scale doesn't represent how strong your heart or body is. and tell your mother to stop putting damaging negative thoughts in your head ;)
It may depend on what you are eating--if you eat like 10 little debbies all day and that's it and are exercising, you will definently gain weight!
This is what I heard:  wait after two days of rest after an intense exercise program, because muscles swell with water, which makes the scale reading unnaturally high.

After a couple weeks of a bootcamp. so to speak, make sure you rest a day between heavy exercise, like, a day on, a day off.

That's my advice to you!
Take care!
Louise :)

THANK YOU OVERCASTKID, RABBIT_LUVER09 and GYPSYFAN for the advices. :D

So basically, I should depend on the measuring tape rather than the scale if I want to lose fat instead of pounds.
The tape will be more representative, yes.

Muscle takes up less space than fat, so when you lose fat and replace it with healthy muscle, your tape measurements will go down.

You might or might not drop a few pounds on the scale as well, but yeah, use the tape as your focus for 'goals.'

Good luck. :)
Look at this!

#12 jenmcc Mar 22 2007 09:57 If you'd been on a restrictive diet (for you - i.e., below 1200 NET intake), then it is possible that you had exhausted your muscle's glycogen stores over time. You'll exhaust faster if you've also been exercising.

As you refeed (get back to maintenance levels), your body will replenish these stores. For every pound of glycogen, your body has to also store 4 lbs of water - in your muscles (this is different water retention than the "bloating" sort you get from too much sodium or TTOM).

Therefore, this could simply be water weight, not fat. How are your clothes fitting?

Does a pound of weight really equal approx. 3500 calories?
http://www.calorie-count.com/forums/post/2936 2.html

She explained it better than I did.
you will loose; but body dose weid things

1st no sugar; no soda; crystal light is good

2nd 1/2 hour a day exercise at least

3rd no naps

also each person has different dibeties; and it changes over time; slowly getting worse

i lost 30 lbs but then regained 10

this is not about weight but about living with dibeties

you will live long and without problems with good exercise; good diet

you may be on insulin sooner without it and may not have a good life
Are you kidding me?  5'3" and a 110 lbs is not overweight.  Of course, you gained 40 pounds going from 7th to 11th grades - you're still growing, plus you're becoming a woman.  You're developing and that causes weight gain.

And I'm horrified that your mom would put such pressure on you.
It sounds like she has an issue with her own body image and is projecting that on to you.  Work on being active and toning up, but for heavens sakes, but don't diet.  Nobody wants to see you end up with an eating disorder.
40 lbs between 7th and 11th grade is not "getting fat."  It's called puberty.

I was 78 lbs at the start of 9th grade (I was weirdly thin as a child) and weighed 130 by the time I graduated; it's normal.  Eat healthy, for goodness' sake DO NOT count calories and join a school sport or something.  I did cross country in high school and I could eat whatever I want and was in amazing shape.

You should be worrying about getting good grades, applying for college, school dances, hanging with your friends, etc. etc.

You have the rest of your life to worry about crap like your weight.  Enjoy your freedom while you can.
well you are not underweight.
underweight is under a bmi of 18.5
your bmi is 19.5

but you could only lose 5 pound without being sick...
you are FAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAR from fat or needing to lose weight though. your mom is taller than you so you are growing. so just keep those 5 pounds because you will need them when you shoot up a bit more.

tell your mom to stop being insane. my mom would do that crap to me too. now that i am older i can see that she was just a jealous..."you know what."

she would be calling me fat when everyone else was telling me im too skinny and even store clerks would sneer at her when we went shopping together and she started with the fat comments when my bmi was the same as yours.

other women can be mean to those who the fear are more intelligent or better looking. sometimes its your mother.

if she keeps at that crap i would have the school guidance counselor call her to embarass her.
thats emotional abuse i think.

that's really mean of your mom....
I agree with post #15 lbalthazor....and I would like to prepare you for the fact that most children are taller and bigger than their parents, this is natural (each generation is a little larger than the last). You may one day be taller than your mom. Is or was your mom taller than your grandma?  It was like this in my family and most other families as well.  It happens with males too.
on what chpastor said...thats totally interesting. and true in my family:

gram - 4'11'' - great depression era baby
mum - 5'5'' (now 5'4'' from osteoissues)
me - 5'7''

gramp - 5'10''
dad- 5'11''
little bro - 6'3''
