Gaining on not a lot of calories

Quote  |  Reply
Hey there...I was wondering about something...

I had anorexia a few years ago and I managed to get to 100 pounds up from 80 with 3,000ish or more a day (5'4.5) Now I've finally motivated myself to gain the additional weight I need to start my period. I'm gaining on less than 1800 calories a day...and I'm only 17. which makes the weight gain process easy but scares me a little. I love to eat and when I'm ready to maintain again I want to be able to eat a decent amount.

I'm wondering what I should do...I'm contemplating increasing my calories by a considerable amount. Ideally this would boost my metabolism. But if that didn't happen I would gain even more weight very quickly...and that scares me. What should I do?

More excerise ?

o_O

I think you should keep consuming more than 1800 seeing as you have an ed and in need to gain weight anyways ..
I gained all my weight back when I upped from 500 to 1400...weird but I guess it is the bodies way of holding onto things....

anyone else?

I wonder why some people need like 4000 and I don't???
Exactely...I read about what other people have to eat to gain anything and I wonder why I gain on what should be less than my maintenance.

For now I guess I shouldn't complain because I do need to gain weight and it's easier when I just have to eat like 1700 calories but I'm concerned for the future when I want to maintain but be able to eat well.

Is my metabolism damaged? Is there anything I can do to fix that?

haha i have been wondering/stressing/worrying about this since i started trying to get better

I totally feel your pain! I gained up from 108 to 128 on 1600 calories in two weeks! How come some people can eat 3000 a day and LOSE?! It's not fair...I want to eat that much...

I was gaining on around 1600 at first, then upped my cals and I think my metabolism went crazy. I don't know what to tell you, from what I've learned "everyone is different" and I guess the most important thing is to not restrict at this point. I would recommend at least upping your calories to 2000 and seeing how you feel at that point. Good luck!!

I know that in hospitals (where they tend to up your cals like CRAZY) most patients have metabolisms that are insanely fast. When I was IP, most people had from 3000-4500 calories after being IP for a week (and they were only gining about .5 lbs a day). I would increase a lot if I were you.

I'm a little bit confused about your post. You said that you gained "all" of your weight back, but aren't you still about 10 lbs short of the goal weight that your nutritionist set you. You are still underweight after all.

Just a bit confused :/

Sorry I never responded to this one oomboo2, my nutritionist actually said that I needed to be around 115ish-120ish for the lowest weight that I could possibly be...I am way more than that...and I gained up to that on only 1400 a day...but my doctor wants me where I was prior to ed, which is 130ish....

sorry for the confusion....but I am def way past 115 and trying not to look at that scale!
Just an update...I increased my calories and instead of gaining more quickling I started losing o_O. So as of now my maintenance is around 2,000 which is what I thought it should have been...so that's good although it makes gaining a pain.

So that just goes to show if you are young and gaining weight on less than 2,000 calories your metabolism is probably damaged and you might just benefit a great deal from increasing your cal intake!
That is great lena, I upped mine as well and gained...boooo.....but I guess it was worth the trial and error!
