Gaining Muscle with Deficit

Quote  |  Reply

I have a question regarding gaining some muscle mass with a calorie deficit...

I currently lift 3-4x and do cardio 3x a week very intensly.  I started counting calories recently and realized I have a calorie deficit. My diet is pretty solid I think I would need to just increase portions to get to break-even.  Even though I am burning more than I am consuming I still get about 250 grams of protein a day (I weigh 215lbs) which is what is usually recommended for someone my weight who lifts intensly.

I know it is very hard to gain muscle while losing fat perfectly but I am just wondering  its possible to have a calorie deficit and still gain some muscle mass/strength if I am getting plenty of protein.

It's possible to gain some, especially if you're a beginner, but the gains will taper off.  Strength can keep going up longer than mass gains, but will also level off eventually.

You need excess calories to build muscle outside of newbie gains. Protein consumption will help keep the muscle you have, but you won't build any more while in a deficit.

I wasn't able to gain any muscle when I lost weight. Just lost fat. It doesn't mean you shouldn't try though, at the very least you want to keep what you have.

I agree with everyone else. I had good definition before I started, just too much added fat. So I am seeing some of the definition better now, and trying not to lose any while I diet. I plan on having a smaller deficit now since I am nearly at my goal, and building up a little more once I get there. It is pretty hard to try yo do both at the same time, so my goal is to conserve the muscle I do have, and then work fro there.

All I seem to do is gain muscle and lose fat!  While losing inches, I hardly ever seem to lose pounds...I want to lose pounds!  I did however, get my waist to 29 inches this last week...so I am very happy about that!
