Could I be gaining weight from not eating enough?
Asked by anonymous on Nov 06, 2008 in Eating Disorders

For the past two years, I have been recovering from an eating disorder and gaining weight. I had been exercising lightly and averaging 1200 calories but I recently increased my calories to 1500. I haven’t stopped gaining weight and I am wondering if I will stop gaining after eating the 1500 calories for awhile. I am a 21 year old female, 5'1”, 95 lbs, and I have a small frame.

Answer

You gained because you ate more calories than you burn at your low weight but if you stick with 1500 calories a day, you should stop gaining soon; however, you are still underweight and you should continue to increase your calories until you reach and maintain 100-105 lb (BMI 19 – 20).  Log your weight on your Account page, but do not focus on normal daily fluctuations.  Instead, follow the green trend line on your weight chart because it smooths out variations to give you a true picture.  Read about the challenge of gaining weight after anorexia at from the Guide to Eating Disorders at About.com.
