Gaining weight, HELP!

Quote  |  Reply

Hey all,

I'm currently living in Italy for the next three months and i am trying desperately to maintain the weight i was before I left home (123lbs). I was doing good until this past sunday when my weight went up to 125.6lbs (57kg). I run 5-6days a week for 30-35minutes. I do core exercises and stretches each day to. I'm nannying here so I am also running after kids in the afternoon (counts as being active, right?). I know I haven't been overeating but I'm eating more carbs than I eat at home. I do have my period right now but I'm not sure if I should gain that much water weight because i normally don't gain much weight if any during my period. If anyone could help me explain my weight gain pleaseee do! Tips and advice are welcome as well!

Hugs from italy!

* i initally posted this in the weight gain forum but was told to put it in this forum, sorry!

They alread moved it....  2lbs either way is not worth getting worried about.  Anyone can be 2lbs heavier or lighter on any given day for no real reason.  Do not panic.  The most common cause is 'fluid retention'... and this is made worse by salty foods, sugary foods, refined carbohydrates (as opposed to complex carbohydrates) caffeine, alcohol and other things that dehydrate.  If you're running a lot make sure you're drinking plenty of fluids.  When you're eating and drinking... don't add salt to your food or indulge in too many glasses of vino or espressos.

I agree with gijane.  This is nothing to worry about.  Your weight will fluctuate from day to day.  If you haven't been overeating, there is no way you gained weight.  It is likely just water weight.

Enjoy your time in Italy!  I live there too!

Okay so I think I have been having to many sugary things and refined carbs because that is all the family I am nannying for eats! I have bites of the kids sugartastic foods but I never eat a whole thing because that is a sure fire way to make my waist line expand. I will try to down more water and less perc coffee & early grey tea! I know 2.5lbs shouldn't make me flip but it took me so long to lose the weight i have and I don't want all my hard work & effort to go to waste you know?

One thing that might help is to steer away from the sugar laden Italian breakfast.  All of the Italians I know eat a cornetto (croissant, usually with a sugary glaze on top) or cookies for breakfast, along with their morning cappuccino.  I still don't get it.  I would buy some eggs or some rolled oats (depending on where you are, these might be hard to find) and cook them up for breakfast.  Or buy some yogurt (especially greek yogurt) and some fruit.  If you are eating with the family, then I imagine that you are eating pasta for lunch.  Make sure you are adding some protein to it.  Same thing for dinner. Also, for the pasta, some stores are starting to sell whole wheat pasta.  I know Barilla makes whole wheat penne, and Garofalo makes whole wheat rigatoni.  You can also find various brands of whole wheat spaghetti.

If you are in Rome, I might be able to help you find some places where you can find some foods that are harder to find in Italy than in the US or UK.  I've lived in this city for a total of more than two years, so I know where to find some good stuff.

I'm living in a VERY small town thats about 40 minutes from Venice. I usually snack on bread and grapes for breakfast then head out for my run then come back and snack on some more carbs and fruit. At lunch they have pasta but I stick to yogurt because I can't have such a heavy lunch because it kills my stomach. I basically snack when no one is home haha I eat little bits of the Kinder bars, mulino bianco treats and such. So bad but I just have a few bites and thats all. I found sweet potatoes the other day so I'm super stoked on that because I love those to bits! I just need to buy a few more veggies because for dinner I have a salad but only with carrots, cucumbers and some peppers in it (very sad salad, I know). I don't think my body is used to all the refined carbs I am eating but thats all this family eats - no whole wheat goodness whatsoever!

How long ago was your flight? I always gain a few lbs when I fly...from bloating I guess. It disappears in a few days though. Also, you said you take a few bites here and there of the kids sugary foods...are you counting these in your intake? That stuff can add up.
