Just had my Gall Bladder removed

Quote  |  Reply

Hi everyone

I just had my Gall Bladder removed this weekend all very scary and so forth but the bottom line is what does this now mean to my diet. Anyone got any advice on how to proceed and been successful? I need an easy change in life style as I have the rest of the family (Husband, 5 1/2 year old girl and 20 month old boy) to take into consideration. I know I am over weight and have been since getting pregnant with the little lad but I have been trying to cook healthily and with reduced fat. I have been exercising a couple of times a week playing tennis and chasing after the kids so it's not like my life style is that unhealthy it is just frustrating that losing the weight is so slow and hard and now my doctor says it is a priority.

Similar experiences, Advice, help, support all appreciated

I had my GB removed a few years ago.  I am still fighting the battle of the buldge though.  One thing I can say is definately watch your fat intake for a while.  Eating greasy foods can make you ill, at least it did me.  Now a few years out I have been able to go back to eating most anything, although that isn't someything I suggest.  Other than the fats bothering me, having my GB out was great as the pain I had had for months was gone.  Just take it easy and get healed up good and then try small amounts of things until you know how they are going to affect you.  Good Luck.

Congrats - welcome to No More Gallbladder Attacks! Be sure to eat mild foods in the next week - light soup (no cream), toast, chicken without skin, minimal roughage (i.e. no salads - your tummy needs easy to digest stuff for a week or so.) You should be good to train up, if you wish, within the next few weeks. And yeah, watch the fat; I had to stop running out-of-doors, because of my "bathroom emergencies." These attacks after eating fat passed within about a year after surgery.

Make sure you take this week to rest; you did just have an operation. Next week, if you're feeling up to it, start taking walks and/or doing cardio again. And in two weeks, if it doesn't hurt, you can start to re-train your core by ding strengthening back and tummy exercises.

Some easy substitutions at home can be switching out white breads for whole grains, making sure half your plate is covered with vegetables at each meal, and cutting back on snacks that are not fruit or veg. Good luck - hope you feel better soon!

Avoid (full fat) dairy products, greasy food, and high-sugar products for the sake of your digestion; stick to a diet of lean meats, veggies, fruit and whole grain.  Don't fry any of your food - bake, broil, boil, roast, or barbecue it. :)
