How to get rid of it? I cooked with tons of garlic yesterday (almost 24 hours ago!) and the smell is still in my fingers. I've washed them a near-infinite amount of times with soap, and a shower didnt help either. Perfume and hand cream only temporarily got rid of the smell.
Any suggestions? alcohol? detergent? I think i'll try detergent later..
lemon juice. buy a lemon and either squeeze it so the juice gets in ur nails or even squeeze it into a bowl and soak your nails. I hate cutting garlic for this reason alot. Thats why already minced garlic in a jar is best plus they make a great roaster garlic one.
Rub ginger root on your fingers.
Vinegar or lemon juice, but beware, it will sting every cut that you have on your hands.
I agree--lemon or lime juice. You can also peel the lemon or lime and rub the white membrane on the inside of the peel on your hands after you scrub your hands with the juice. It soaks the oil out of your skin. (Works on your face, too.)
thanks, I tried lime and it worked! thanks also for the heads up on the stinging - it really stung alot but atleast i expected it (i have a bad habit of peeling skin from my fingers, so that was quite alot of stinging)
ouch. yea i know how that feels. I get crazy hang nails and my cuticles get pretty banged up from filing at work.
next time just put you fingers under cold water.do not rub then together, just leave then under the faucet for about a minute or so,it works for onion smell just as well.
if you rub something thats stainless steel under running water it takes away the smell of garlic and onions. They even sell stainless steel "soap bars" for this purpose but anything stainless steel will do. it really works
and dont buy preminced garlic, it just isnt the same
Yup, stainless steel... all you have to do is rub your hands against the kitchen sick basin. It's a chef's trick.
I had no idea about the stainless steel! So that's why my fingers never smell like onion or garlic when I clean my sink after chopping. Also, tempting as it may be, pre-minced garlic (unless it's fresh pre-minced garlic) doesn't have any of the health benefits of fresh, so between that and the taste, it's worth the extra effort!
I agree with the stainless steel solution. A big soup spoon works quite well.
