Gastric bypass the easy way out... Scene from Scrubs
So I was watching Scrubs and there was a scene with an overweight 20 something who was going to have gastric bypass... here is the scene:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UD5YpNN8pIQ
Dr. Kelso: Hello young lady! I went ahead and set an appointment up for you with our nutritionist who's going to help you create a diet and exercise plan so I never have to see you in here again!
Miss Goldman: Yeah... I'm having a gastric bypass.
Dr. Kelso: But, Miss Goldman, you're only twenty five. And considering that any serious surgery has inherit risks, I really don't think-
Miss Goldman: How are you not getting this?! I don't care what you think!
...
Dr. Kelso: There are no magical fixes. It's all up to you. So get up off your keester, get out of here and go start doing the work.
Ms. Goldman: What if it's too hard?
Turk: Yeah. What if it's too hard?
Dr. Kelso: Turkelton, I have no idea why you're chiming in, but
I'll say this to both of you. Nothing in this world that's worth having
comes easy.
Turk: I gotta go
What do you think? Do you agree that "Nothing in this world that's worth having comes easy" and gastic bypass is the easy way out? Personally I have been busting my a** to lose this weight and I get a little annoyed with those who chose gastic bypass, just stop eating so much and start exercising and don't let yourself get to 400+ lbs

Easy way out - ha! Helpful to many - yes.

Annoyed - what do you have to be annoyed about?
Are you not familiar with the discipline required following the surgery as well as the stringent diet restictions and required supplements? Sounds like you think its a walk in the park.
Theres the argument such discipline should simply be applied to diet which some succeed at but as our obese world demonstrates, not others. So some facing health and life threatening obesity choose to 'force their hand' and then get branded as diet cheaters.
Also telling people what not to do in order to avoid getting to 400+ lbs doesnt help people who are already there.
Im not suggesting you havent been "busting my a** to lose this weight" but that justifies nothing. My insurance declined me the surgery. I was 465 lbs. Some might say I busted some booty myself. In the last 15 mths Ive lost 200 lbs. My success doesnt put me in any position to cast down those who have successfully acquired a tool (because thats all it is) to hopefully help them after they failed other methods.
People have assumed since I did drop 200 without the surgery (withl 100 to go) that I wouldnt be supportive of the procedure as if I 'prove' its not necessary. It ended up not being necessary for me. Not everyones me. Perhaps I feel compassion instead of annoyance because I know how hopeless it feels facing the prospect of losing 300 lbs.
But see you did it without the surgery thus it goes to show that it can be done, hence the surgery is the easy way out - it is less work period. Would you have lost the weight much sooner with the surgery yes. But the discipline... its watching what you eat because your stomach is smaller and if you eat to much you will throw up because you stomach can't handle it. Please inform me of what other discipline there is? Seriously it is much easier to eat less than it is to exercise and lose weight the hard way.
We obviously aren't going to agree on this I am just putting it out there that I think that this surgery is the easy way out.
I think that the surgery is actually more work. After you've had the surgery there are all kinds of medical complications. Those who had the surgery 20 years ago where they removed part of your intestine had issues with calcium absorbtion, more dietary restrictions in terms of what they could and could not digest. Even today if you have the lap band it is a lot of work, beyond a regular diet.
I think like everything it has it's place and in many cases is the last chance saloon, yes for some it is the difference between life and death.

No, its not. Bypass didnt originate with weightloss but with those who were forced to lose digestive tract due to things like cancer. Ask these patients if eating is harder or easier since the procedure.

There are dieters who can break their diet with no gastric effect. Others can feel queasy. After the procedure, you eat the wrong thing or too much and youre nauseous, throwing up. Not easier.

Please inform me of what other discipline there is?
- Dieters take vitamins to be healthy. Recipients must take supplements because without them they risk serious malnutrition and finding themselves in a hospital ER on an IV.
- Dieters find it beneficial to eat slowly so not to consume more than needed to be full. Bypass recipients have to control how quickly they eat or drink to keep it from coming back up.
- Dieters that dont have sugar issues can decide whether they will cut down on sugar. Recipients must avoid it to prevent 'dumping'.
- Dieters by choice can opt to include treats, low cal or not. Recipients food consumption is so restricted and such treats jeopardize the consumption of required food nutrients.
- Dieters can decide the sequence of their eating. Recipients focus on eating the most nutritious food to avoid fullness before a meal's less nutritious food is considered.
- Dieters can choose how to proportion their meals schedule their eating. Recipients must eat small frequent meals.
Im sure Im missing other things. Bottomline the procedure entails many additional requirements and restrictions that demand discipline not necessary of voluntary dieting plans.
In addition, the procedure does NOT deal with or solve a major weightloss challenge - the mental, emotional a nd impulsive issues of overeating. Plus dieters who've had the procedure often find their efforts discredited by those such as yourself.
There are valid concerns and objections to the surgery which should be considered. One of the most self-defeating things to do is go into the procedure thinking "it is less work period".
As you said, losing weight requries one to "stop eating so much and start exercising". Much more is required of those who've had gastric bypass so its simply not easier.
Is my sodium intake too low?
You have nothing to worry about because sodium deficiency is extremely rare. In fact, there is not even an recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA... Read more
