Gay marriage! Where my gays at?!

I am attending the wedding in August of my college ex-girlfriend who is now a lesbian. They have faced opposition and she has relied on me for support. I told her I would be more than glad to stand up with her and for her...Very conservative Jewish family...

I was married and really dont think its an institution for me. However, I agree that its the right for EVERYONE to be able to marry and share their life together and be recognized in a meaniful way, if that is their choice.

What do you think?

Gay marriage is a huge voting issue for me. Its so ridiculous that gay people still cant get married in most states. Its 2007, people!

I saw a political cartoon a few years ago that I still think about when people debate gay marriage: A man and woman are laying together in bed, smoking cigarettes (implication being that they just had sex,) the man turns to the woman and says "Gay marriage ruins the sanctity of the institution of marriage." The woman replies, "that's what my husband says, too."

People always make fun of Canada but they allow all types of people to get married!!!!! I really don't get the issue... even if you're not gay or whatever... how does it bother you if they want to get married?? It seems like a ridiculous opposition to me.

Me too!  I'm glad I'm in Canada and can (if I want):

marry a girl
smoke pot
get a hooker

I say marry whoever you want, I know a few gay couples that are a lot happier than ANY straight couple!

I dont get the opposition either....who are these people who actively worry that gays will be able to get married? Like, what part of that bothers you? The sex? Cause theyre gonna do it no matter what! They can do it married or single. Its hypocritical to be against gay marriage AND be against sex out of wedlock.

People should be able to marry whomever they chose. Anyone who thinks otherwise should think long and hard about why they believe they are better than someone else. What makes you so special that you deserve rights another human being does not? GAH I could get so mad thinking about it.

i just dont believe we were made to love the same sex. im also a christian so that should explain it even more.

i'm from canada too and i'm all for gay marriage. good to see so many open-minded people on cc.

Being a Christian is no excuse. If I said it was my religion to hate black people or disapprove of interracial dating, would that make it okay?

Straight, American, and 120% in support of gay marriage. 
Nothing about being gay makes a person any less worthy of basic human rights than someone who is straight.  I think it's frightening how much religion dictates the laws in the US...

I'm a Christian too... so that doesn't really explain your beliefs because we obviously don't agree on this topic! Don't judge a book by its cover!

mirandarae, it's all well and good you wouldn't chose being gay for yourself, but why on earth does that mean someone can't have the same rights as you? This Christian BS is infuriating.

I think gay marriage should be legal in the states as well.

If only the US was more similar to Canada.

Do you run away and hide for seven days when you get your period, making sure not to touch anyone or anything? I hope so, because otherise you are in violation of the book of Leviticus, the same bible book oft quoted by Christians as their basis of not approving of homosexuality.

Good topic, though controversial.  I am all for gay marriage, which is weird, because I'm not in a hurry to get married myself  :)  I especially agree with posts # 6 and 11.

I'm ashamed of the current state of judgement in this country.  Of course I support gay marriage.  It shouldn't be my right to decide your relationship, legally or not. 

I don't believe in god either but I don't try to pass laws making it illegal for others to worship.
