I didn't say that abortions should never be done ...  I simply believe that "abortion on demand," or for any reason other than extreme circumstances (e.g. mother's life is in jeopardy) is wrong, because I see it as taking a human life.

Now, in the spirit of peace, and the fun that this thread was, I'll add my original post to try to get the ball rolling again:

Gay Marriage: Should be banned - Civilizations spanning centuries new better, why don't we?  Homosexuality? Fine between consenting parties.  Civil unions? Also OK.

Abortion: Stop allowing it to be used as contraception - Only in extreme circumstances.

Obama: Charismatic, articulate, nice guy.  Also a liar, and corrupt product of Chicago machine.  Poor judgement as evidenced by Jerimiah Wright, et. al.   Since he'll be our next President, there will be no one happier than me if I'm wrong.

Mccain: Ugh ...  Time to do away with the two party system!!!

Jesus: Not only recognized as historical figure, but also Son of God.

Evolution : Bigger leap of Faith than Jesus!

Global Warming : Not man made

George W.: Nice guy, high principles and would love to hang out with him - wish he would have run the country instead of the evil idiots aroundhim.

The Drinking Age: Should be either lowered to the same age as all other "adult" rights, or bring them up to the drinking age, since people are maturing slower these days.

The War: "War" and "Terror" are both concepts to debate in the comfort and safety of your home, not in other countries at the expense of lives.

Meat: Seriously... we're omnivores.

Tattoos: Neat art.

The Devil: No opinion.

Ghosts: If machines have them, why not other complex structures and organisms?  :-)

Aliens: The probability approaches one while the Universe continues to expand without forseeable end.

Censorship: Is for the sheep, since they can't simply make the choice to censor something on their own.

No mention of personal rights except Section 2 Line 1, which only explicitly states that people have rights in all states, not simply one.

Gay Marriage: I don't understand the fervor against them--don't like it, don't get one! :-)

Abortion: Personally pro-life but legally pro-choice...old men shouldn't get to dictate what I can or can't do with my body.

Obama: Has shown a lot of class despite all the undeserved ragging he's getting from the Repulicans...McCain has much shadier 'connections' than he does.

Mccain: HE seems like an okay guy but his party has been sucking and playing dirty this election, and Sarah Palin is George W. in a dress. BIG MISTAKE picking her just because she has lady parts.

Jesus: The idea brings peace. :-)

Fourteenth Amendment - Section I (Equal Rights)

The only possible Constitutional argument stands in the definition of "personhood."  I believe it begins at conception.

Abortion: I hope that America doesn't become even remotely close to China's population, yet it just seems utterly barbaric to abort a living fetus. Adopt your kid to Angelina and Brad.

Pot: Further studies on the long term effects of it need to be conducted, but overall, it's just another drug that can create a lot of fatalities via motor vehicle accidents.

The War: We have many problems in our own back yard that need to be addressed before becoming another fallen Western Roman Empire from over expansion and petty wars.

Disingenuous is not posting the entire Section I of the XIV Amendment.  You left out the first line which clearly states:

Section 1. All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside.

then as you stated:

No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.

Regardless of how you define personhood, being born is already defined.  Also, the Amendment is denying the States the right to act on people.  Not people from acting on themselves.  One of the majorly accepted definitions of life is also that it is self-sustaining.  A fetus is not self-sustaining and cannot live without taking energy and nourishment from the womans body.  Thus, a woman acting on herself to remove a part of herself, without causing permanent physical harm, the State has no say in creating a law to prevent this.

Not disingenuous, but IMO irrelevant  - I didn't post the rest of the amendment either.  And let me state again that I do not advocate outlawing abortion.  I oppose abortion, except for in the most extreme circumstances. I do believe that that children shoud be made to have parental consent, but that's another issue ...

That said:  You make the argument (or parrot the legalese) that has been made, I assume, since Roe v Wade ...  However, to follow that argument out logically regarding the definition of life, i.e., that "it is self sustaining" ; critically injured or ill people (which happens to be my area of expertise) who require life sustaining measurements should not receive that treatment.  Similarly the elderly and infirm who require life supportive care, should not receive it.  Minimally, it should be our decision to "act on ourselves" be it as a family, a community, a society ... to rid us of our pesky grandparents, or parents, or disabled children, right?  We might as well euthanize them all ...  After all, it seems to me that by your definition it's just abortion at the other end of life. 

In my view, this is where that argument falls apart - You can't have it both ways.

Lastly, I would say that the death (of the infant) certainly causes permanent physical harm.

I see the beginning line of Section 1 of Amendment XIV as relevant to the legal and moral guideline that the States and the Federal Government do not have the rights to interfere with a persons right to act upon themselves when it does not cause undue burden or harm upon others.

The connection of ailed/crippled/hurt and people in similar states to the undeveloped fetus is not a connection I made, nor intended to make.  I don't logically follow your leap.  Self-sustaining in the definition of life is to provide for oneself by ability.  These people have the ability, but are incapable to act because of an outside affliction.  A fetus doesn't have the ability.

Acting as an efficient society that minimalizes based on production output or some other metric, then that society would agree with your postulate and remove the people that "cost" more than they "produce".

I don't see the connection between stating that a woman can remove a part of herself without killing herself and those without the capability to take care of themselves should be euthanized.

An infant is a born child.

Willing removal of a non-malignant part of your own body may not cause permanent physical damage, but I believe it causes long-term, if not permanent mental damage.  It's an extreme behavior, but creating a new life is also an extreme behavior.  The responsibility of taking care of another life is often trivialized by many parents that simply procreate for their own selfish reasons or lack of responsibility.

Can you give a quick outline of your statement "I do believe that that children should be made to have parental consent"?

The Nazis called themselves The National Socialist German Workers' Party, but they weren't by definition true socialists.

 How can spreading around the money make the economy worse?? And what does Hitler have to do with economy.  The only connection is the word socialist.  Americans throw it around like it's a dirty word without knowing anything about the ideology, or the practice.  Many European countries have thrived (yes, economically!) on socialist governments.  Look at Scandinavia, especially Sweden.  Aside from that, Obama's policy is nothing near socialism.  So I still don't get your connection with Hitler.  And I find your remarks about his ears bordering on racism.
