I am new to vegetarianism, for about a month. I've been doing very good but I was wondering if anyone could help me out and list some foods that contain gelatin so I know what to stay away from?
Stuff like...
marshmellows, jello, some ice cream/popsicles/ice cream bars, some medicine/vitamins, some gummy bears/other gummies, Valentine heart-shaped message candies, "frosted" things like frosted mini wheats and poptarts...mentos, altoids...
Can't think of anything else or find other things. hope that helps some.
When in doubt, check the labels of food! :D
almost every yogourt, make sure you look the ingredients.
Skittles
If you check the ingredients list it should say!
And keep in mind that Halal or Kosher Gelatin is NOT vegetarian!
Halal just means that the animal is killed under certain religious beliefs (like the animals face north, etc), and Kosher is usually fish bones.
As an easy rule, I avoid all soft lollies (jubes, jelly babies, etc) or anything with marshmellows.
Yes, Pinky bars DO have gelatin in them, sadly.
Check yogurt also, as they often put gelatin in them here in NZ as a filler, as Gelatin is a very cheap product.
Also it gives the yogurt the texture so many people are occustomed to.
Um... And in Cheese, watch out for Renet.
If the ingredients list contains renet and it doesn't say "Vegetarian renet", it isn't safe.
Some red food dyes are indeed made from crushed beetle wings, though I have no idea what number it is so I haven't been able to check things for that.
Some deserts have gelatin in them also, as a filler, since it is calorie free it finds its way into most low-cal deserts!
I once took a bite of a Weight Watchers Lamington only to then read the ingredients and find it contained gelatin.
... Sorry that ended up to be a huge blurb.
Long story short, read the ingredients list and watch out for Gelatin and Renet! :)
weiing - Mentos? Really?! ![]()
I don't like them anyway so it isn't a huge problem, I just wouldn't have thought they'd have gelatin in them...
I'm pretty obsessed with ingredient lists and nutritional information labels so I don't usually find any accidental consumption of gelatin or renet.
I actually haven't looked into the mentos specifically... but I was just listing some stuff other people listed on some other forums I found while googling gelatin in food. So I'm pretty shocked too! Especially the valentine message heart candies... did not know that!
The frosting on Pop-tarts and on shredded wheat has gelatin in it, too. =/
Starbursts candies has it, as well. Neccos -- they're the same brand that makes those conversation hearts, btw. And, evidently McDonald's fries have meat in their flavoring (not too sure about the veracity of that, but I saw that on a couple of pages as I was googling the subject). Gummi bears, gummi worms.
Stuff's everywhere. xP
swedish fish is gelatin free
. I'm a vegetarian, new to calorie counter.
Most dry roasted peanuts! Watch out!
Dry roasted peanuts???? OMG I didn't know!
Edit: You were right, not all of them contain it, but Planters do.
That is nasty!
But no gelatin in the Planters DRY ROASTED LIGHTLY SALTED
I think the beetle wings are "Carmine"
Capsule casings and that means prescripton drugs, vitamin/mineral capsules and cold medicine.
There are vegan capsule available though. Solgar does quite a few supplements gelatin free of the mainstream companies.

If you see "Vegetarian gelatin" in an ingredient list, then I am sure it doesn't contain animal products.
