General Motors Diet

Quote  |  Reply
I started on the GM diet today. And I feel GREAT! Many people I know have done it before and not gained it all back. I think this just might be the one "diet" worth doing. What do you think?

Well I don't think it's great.  Any "diet" that severely restricts the kinds of food and eliminates entire food groups is not sustainable.  I'm only interested in making changes to my diet and exercise habits that will last a lifetime.  I'm in this for life, not just for now.

I'm speaking from long years of experience.  I tried just about every diet out there, lost weight, then gained it all back when the diet was over.  Never again!

By the way, that diet has absolutely nothing to do with General Motors.  They never instituted any such thing.
I'm afraid I agree with Clairelaine.  This is just the Cabbage Soup diet (which a friend of mine tried) under a new name.  She lost some weight, drove herself crazy, and then gained it all back plus some.
That sounds totally unhealthy, even on the short term.

I'm sure your body will not thank you for putting it through something drastic and totally illogical as that.
You are supposed to lose 10-17 lbs a week on this?  Yikes!  This looks like the worst sort of fad diet to me.  Severe restriction of food groups, no balanced nutrition.  Huge, fast weight loss promises.  98% of people who go on diets such as this gain all the weight back.  Folks who are successful in keeping the weight of make changes in their diet that they plan to keep for the rest of their lives.  I certainly wouldn't want to eat like this GM diet for the rest of my life!
I don't really see the point.  If you eat 8 bananas and 3 cups of milk, that's about 1100 calories.  You can eat 1100 calories with a balanced diet and still lose, just add another 100 calories to get to the 1200 minimum.  I find it amusing that they say that the board of GM came up with this, like they'd care!  Or know anything about nutrition.
Couldn't help but notice this idea is 20 years old ... if it was such a good one, I sincerely doubt it would have been "secret" for so long.
I tried this a long time ago as it is only the cabbage soup diet under a different name and it's garbage.  The soup sucks and it put my in a bad mood due to the limitations on your foods.  Stupid Stupid stupid....
I agree sounds exactly like the Cabbage Soup diet.....
Questions to the original poster:

How many people do you have done this and have kept the weight off?  How much weight are we talking about and how long have they been off of it?

Why exactly do you believe this is "the" diet that is worth doing?

I did the general motors diet, only it had a different name! But it was the exact same thing. It worked really well for me. During that week I cheated and I had a bagel with cream cheese on day 3... I know.... where's my self control.... At the end of the week, I was happy to see that despite my bagel :P I still lost 13 pounds. My sister did this with me, and she stuck to it exactly... she lost 24 in one week. I know it might sound unhealthy, but it's only one week. After the week, just re-calculate the calories you need for your lack of 15 pounds! It worked for me, and I didn't gain the weight back for over a year... becuase I went on Atkins then... BAD MISTAKE ATKINS = FATKINS

Anyways, I think that although this diet might be unhealthy, It does exactly what you want it to do, and it helps alot if you're stuck at a plateau. If you do this diet for a week, and stick to it, you will be very happy. I did it, and now that I think about it again, I should do it too! I need a bit of a kick start here....
I know its unhealthy, but you should do it anyways.

Man... somedays, I just feel like cancelling my account here.

*throws arms up in the air and walks out of the thread*
I hear ya Bigtwinky. This thread just bugs the crap outta me....

OP maybe you should give this diet a try. The weight may not come off as fast, but it's healthy and teaches you how to eat right. Good luck! http://www.calorie-count.com/forums/post/1223 0.html
Even though it's been said multiple times on this thread, I have to put in my 2 cents worth.

go on a diet that you can live on for the rest of your life.  What is so hard to understand about that?  If you can't live it for the long-term, then why bother for the short-term.

give your body good nutrition while you are losing weight.  What is so hard to understand about that?  It's just plain common sense that a healthy body is going to do a better job of losing the weight than an unhealthy body.  Lots of stuff has to go on during the weight loss process -- including shrinking up the skin and getting rid of those hundreds of miles of excess blood vessels.

Not only is it unhealthy for adults, I happen to know the poster amani_009 is 15(from a different post). I can't even begin to imagine what it will do to a growing body and mind.

So unhealthy and unrealistic...and plain ole ridiculous.
isnt general motors a car company? lol =]
Ya, and if you clicked on the link, it says something along the lines of the diet being made specifically for GM employees.

The whole thing might be a little bit more credible if this were on an actual GM website
I may have this wrong, please feel free to correct me.  This is not a DIET website but a HEALTHY WAY OF LIVING website.

SO

Why are peeps posting about diets and fad ones at that?

I and doubtless many other peeps use this site to help educate myself about a healthy lifestyle which includes healthier ways of eating and exercising etc...  I use this site for motivation and support and to keep myself focused on my goals.

I am in agreement with Bigtwinky on this one.

Posting about such silly diets could be enough of a temptation to countless numbers of us who are trying very hard to change our lives for good.  Posting about these fad diets could, in a moment of weakness, send us off track and onto the road we've been on so many times before.

Rant over!

most of the ppl here claim that this diet is unhealthy and doesnt last long.. as far as i can guess, 90% of ppl out here (including me for sure) hv not been able to maintain ANY "diet".. thats why being overweight is such a big problem these days..

losing weight, and maintaining it even for a year doesnt sound like a bad idea to me.. name one diet that u can follow forever?

its not that i want to eat unhealthy, but there has to be a beginning to losing weight and whether or not we r able to maintain it is in our own hands..

by the way, not eating proper nutrients is absolutely equal to eating junk!!
Sorta makes me want to run to the bathroom

I personally feel this diet is extremely effective..atleast for people who want to loose more than 10-15kgs.Atleast it gives a kickstart.i have been on this since many months.and effectively lost some weight....though gained too but, not coz of this diet, its my eating habits which most of us suffer..so why talk abt healthy eating habits... besides this diet suggests food most of which is quite healthy. the Best part is u are never hungry and u have flexibility of eating different things. (u can cheat also sometimes lil.it's a lil difficult on day 4 and 5 but try on...) i suggest everyone should try it once...it really helps..but not much coz sudden loss is reflected on skin and face... and yea to convert it to pure.. vegetarian.... replace beef to one cuppa rice

How can I make walking fun?

You have to find a way to make exercise fun or else you won't do it. If you walk indoors on a treadmill, I recommend moving outdoors into the fresh air... Read more
