Get in the Mood with Aphrodisiac Food

If revving up your sex drive is your goal, then you might want to seek out aphrodisiac foods.  While ads for performance enhancing drugs flood TV and computer screens, that’s not the role of aphrodisiac foods.  Think of these foods as an added boost, not a cure-all, for your sex life.  Still, incorporating aphrodisiac foods into your diet is a natural way to increase your interest in going all the way, without the potentially harmful side-effects found in enhancement pills.

How do they work?

Sex psychologist Sheryl Kingsberg, PhD explains libido: "It's about your body signaling that it wants to be sexual. Whether or not there is any intention to act on it, we all have a certain level of drive."  Aphrodisiac foods ignite the biological aspect of sexual impetus by increasing blood flow, acting on sex hormones such as estrogen, and enhancing the brain’s receptiveness.  But don’t get greedy because sexual desire is also heavily affected by the desire for your partner, visual and other sensory stimulation, and by level of stress.  Or perhaps aphrodisiac foods work via the placebo effect, which means, again, that it’s all in your head.

Brain Teasers

Bananas get a nod for their high concentration of potassium, which is essential for transporting serotonin.  Serotonin, a neurotransmitter, plays a huge role in regulating mood in the brain.  Or do bananas stimulate desire by their suggestive shape?

Chocolate contains theobromine and phenelethylamine (PEA); the first acts like caffeine, heightening alertness, and the second, gives the feeling of bliss.  An exposé on PEA written by Kanika Goswami, explains, “Heady emotions, racing pulses and heavy breathing results, and all these are (unfortunately) clinically explained as an overdose of this chemical.”  So, if your goal is to have a night of passion, chocolate-covered bananas might get your mind and your mood right.  Fondue party anyone?

Hormone Helpers

Raw oysters, with their high levels of zinc, are a low-calorie way to promote testosterone production in both men and women.  A helping of these may increase female libido and male sperm count.  Oysters are also high in dopamine, another neurotransmitter that stimulates the pleasure center in the brain.

Avocados are another hormone-helper with their healthy level of vitamin B6 , needed for hormone synthesis.  Considering their high levels of folic acid, another B-vitamin that boosts energy, guacamole and chips may have a whole new meaning as an appetizer.  And , suggestively again, avocados were called "testicle trees" by the Aztecs because they grow in pairs.

Blood Rushers

Salmon, by way of the anti-inflammatory omega-3 fatty acids it contains, eases blood flow to improve circulation throughout the body.  Omega-3s also assist in the production of dopamine and serotonin, the body’s natural antidepressants.  Good blood flow and feeling happy may increase a woman’s libido and fight impotence in men. If eating fish regularly is not possible, consider taking a fish oil dietary supplement to get a regular dose of healthy fish oil in your diet.

If you’re looking for a vegetarian option for increasing blood flow, look for foods with anthocyanins. This antioxidant found in plant life is notable for increasing circulation and reducing fat build-up in blood vessels. It is found in its highest concentration in eggplant, aubergines, and red grapes.  People also get anthocyanins from berries, such as acai berries, blueberries, cherries, and raspberries.

Your thoughts…

Do you use aphrodisiac foods do you use to keep the candle burning?

Why is seafood on this list? It is the number one cause of food illnesses and extremely polluted now. And fish oild comes from the liver which is used to detoxify the fish. It's all filthy stuff!

Seafood is safe and many fish are farm raised, not as healthy as wild.  The waters are much bigger than just along the coastline!  Your websites are very liberal and baised.  God has the planet in perfect order and in control.  We are nothing compared to Him.  Our "wisest" men are fools compared to God!!!!

Salt and light for a dark world

You two are funny=) Fish has never made me sick, but then I rarely get sick, it's been about 5 years now. Collapse of biodiversity in our oceans has happened twice before? I'd like to see information supporting that.  And, if we wanna sound unbiased, we might wanna lay of the whole God bit for a minute.

I know what my girlfriends eating for dinner tonight=) Sushi rolls, with salmon and avocado.  A fruit salad, with bananas, blueberries, raspberries, red grapes, and cherries. And chocolate for desert.  Maybe I'll put the chocolate on me=) ha ha ha

Hahaha  Our planet is in anything but perfect condition.  Ninav is right!  However, you can still get seafood that is in good condition and will not kill you.  But whatever you do, do NOT get farm raised seafood.  They're basically raised in their own poo and fed ground up chicken feathers among other terrible things.  Bacteria and then some.  I've read that some doctors say that if you eat farm raised fish more than once a year, you increase your risk of cancer tenfold.

Aubergine is French for eggplant.  Do you mean something else by "aubergines," or is this just a redundancy?

There is absolutely nothing in seafood that can not be found in plant food. Fish clean the waterways and that is why they are so contaminated right now. Let alone the fact that they feel pain and suffer and want to live.

Why take the risk of possible illness, destruction to the environment, and suffering of another being?

I have had seafood poisoning, was hospitalized for several days and it took me over a month to recover.

I have read some of your post and can see you are an avid vegetarian, and that's fine, but all your 2 cents about how you see the world and how you think things should be is really annoying. You can't base your life on what you read and what everyone tells you, you would be hermit living in a dark whole.

Get over it, people eat meat, they eat fish, they have SEX, I mean this discussion is not about the OCEANS and the fish being toxic (which BTW I live on the GC and our seafood is just fine thanks), it's asking, "Do you use aphrodisiac foods do you use to keep the candle burning?"

So do you? I am thinking you don't have any candles to be burned.

Let's get this discussion back on track folks, shall we?!

I am all for using food to get to my honey's heart, (not that I need itWink)!

I will say, though the reasons these foods work as they do is all scientific, other foods can also be added that do not have any scientific factors what so ever. Think about it, strawberry's and whip cream, not on this list and probably have no hormone factors, but get some of those out for a midnight snack and see who's libido goes up then, lol. Tongue out

Too funny.

I'm liking the banana-chocolate fondue idea. I think my husband will too.

I think ninav has some valid points, but this is not a site to coerce people into becoming vegan.  We are here to share our stories on weight loss alternatives.  What kinds of things work and what doesn't.  ninav, Instead of prosyletizing about how horrible the carnivore life is, why don't you share some of the great foods and recipes that comprise your diet?  You might win over more of us if you can show us how you eat instead of telling us how bad our choices are.   Just a thought...

Agreed!

Well said!  What's that old saying, 'you catch more flies with honey than vinegar' or something to that effect?

I have to say that you sound like you are trying to keep others from enjoying healthy food.  Fish and other kinds of seafood are GREAT for your health.  They are lean and packed with protein.  It is your right to decide whether or not you want to hurt the fish, but you do not have the right to make a big deal about others eating them.  Seafood is not the problem.  The problem is how it is prepared.  I eat raw fish all the time and I have never gotten food poisoning.

Ugh Seafood makes me soooo sick! I never eat it. Even the smell is bad. If I ate seafood, sex would be the last thing on my mind because I'd be spending the night in the bathroom.

If your hubby likes sea food, go for it because it TOTALLY works!!! We went out for chinese last night, (my sweety LOVES his sushi) and about 4 hours later (adequate digestion time) we had a more wonderful practice for valentines day then any pill can give you!! LaughingLaughingLaughing

Ninav and Chrissysilc - C'mon - get your debate out of this type of thread.  This is a light hearted, fun nutrion based converstation, and the two of you jumped in first with your political and religious agendas.  There are plenty of forums on the internet for both of you.    I don't come here to be preached to by vegans or creationists.  Trust me, if I decide to enter either of those debates, I'll find the right place and I'll go there.
