If revving up your sex drive is your goal, then you might want to seek out aphrodisiac foods. While ads for performance enhancing drugs flood TV and computer screens, that’s not the role of aphrodisiac foods. Think of these foods as an added boost, not a cure-all, for your sex life. Still, incorporating aphrodisiac foods into your diet is a natural way to increase your interest in going all the way, without the potentially harmful side-effects found in enhancement pills.
How do they work?
Sex psychologist Sheryl Kingsberg, PhD explains libido: "It's about your body signaling that it wants to be sexual. Whether or not there is any intention to act on it, we all have a certain level of drive." Aphrodisiac foods ignite the biological aspect of sexual impetus by increasing blood flow, acting on sex hormones such as estrogen, and enhancing the brain’s receptiveness. But don’t get greedy because sexual desire is also heavily affected by the desire for your partner, visual and other sensory stimulation, and by level of stress. Omega-3s also assist in the production of dopamine and serotonin, the body’s natural antidepressants. Good blood flow and feeling happy may increase a woman’s libido and fight impotence in men. If eating fish regularly is not possible, consider taking a fish oil dietary supplement to get a regular dose of healthy fish oil in your diet.
If you’re looking for a vegetarian option for increasing blood flow, look for foods with anthocyanins. This antioxidant found in plant life is notable for increasing circulation and reducing fat build-up in blood vessels. It is found in its highest concentration in eggplant, aubergines, and red grapes. People also get anthocyanins from berries, such as acai berries, blueberries, cherries, and raspberries.
