Quote  |  Reply
I'm new here and would like a older group to chat with. Maybe we can go down the trail to Skinnyville together.

I have had a few health problems but I am in great shape and healthy now and want to get this weight.

Could use any and all help. Would anyone care to join me in my new adventure?

I'm not one to believe in horoscopes but this one spoke to me this morning. Does it speak to you,how can you relate.

If you want a positive outcome to a current battle, you have to stand your ground.

I need to stand my ground to, eat at home, cook, stay away from junk food and get back to my exercise.

What you say gals- is today the day we stand our ground?

We can do this- i know we can. Just think lose and lose the meds. That's a goal for us. Of course we all know to do away with all meds-may not happen, but blood pressure is one we can work on . Lets do it- eat healthy, exercise and ditch the salt.

I think you have Kris and I turned around. Ha! Ha!

Kansasgal- Yes it is painful and I take darvacet 3 or 4 times a day as needed but I try not to complain. I take a lot of medication but I am doing OK. You get use to it.

I know what you mean there is such sadness when you see some of the kids with cancer. Last year we had a popular boy who died and was only in 1st grade. He had battled with it since kindergarten.

Sorry to hear about your nephew. There are so many suprise heart attacks at younger ages anymore.

How are you doing Kris?

Lora

Is this going to be like the other over 50 group where I am the only fellow?  I can remember a time in my life when I thought that was an ideal situation.  : )  The handle is a mouthful, Mel will do fine.
Hi Mel- so what so bad about being the only rooser in a hen house? We can talk with you. I can talk foot ball ,baseball and many other things better than I can talk about sewing and some of the Betty Homemaker. How about that Mike Fink and his pit bulls. I hate it when people mistreat dogs. They can be just as kind and gentle as a kitten if they are trained right.Trouble is most people aren't patience enought to train them, and that's scary.

Maybe I can get Marvin here to talk to you,he hates puters almost as much as healthy food.

Lori- so I got you two mixed up? Yew I do that with the kids and end up saying" hey you" I walked just one miles today and with this humidity it was hard, and I walk over 5 at the gym and in cool weather. So what did you do today? Me I'm trying to learn spread sheets.Spend 5 hrs trying to get it down pat.

Fixing cat fish for dinner- we fish all the time. What kind of fish do you all have where you live? We have cat, crappie, drum, bass, several other kink but we like the crappie and cat the best. Don't like bass- to many times they are wormy.

Kris- where are you.

OK where is Kris? Maybe she had to run away to. See you tomorrow.

Mel glad you joined us.
Kansasgal, I may fall behind a little in sports but I can discuss sewing with the girls.  I was a sewing machine repairman for Singer in years gone by and a part of my job was advising so I had to learn the in and outs of buttonholing and blind heming, etc. etc.  As for the football player he truly had the right last name.  Only a fink would treat any animal that way.  My son has had 2 pitbulls and everytime I was at his house one of those dogs was in my face.  The only danger I had of dying was from drowning by a sloppy wet tongue.  A pitbull does not have a mean temperment at birth, they are trained to be mean.  The false reputation makes people afraid when they see one.  I will say they are about the most muscular and strongest dogs for their size I have ever seen.  I would be much more leary of a chow or German shepard.   I don't know if there is a dog that is actually born mean.  I used to fish all the time back in western PA but since I moved to south central PA I don't do much of it.  When I read the book on fish from these waters and advised not to eat more than one serving a month of species it is telling me not to eat them at all.  Can't blame you on those catfish, absolutely delicious.  Crappie is good also.  Have you eaten baked walleye?  It is my number one favorite fresh water fish and cod from the salt water.  I simply hate all the farmed fish and shellfish.  Like chewing on mush.

Mel
Well How about that- you can talk sewing and I don't have a clue.I use a staple gun, welder but not a button hole thingie. haha My Mom was a great seamstress, so I just never bothered to learn to sew. People don't sew like they use to, anyway none of my daughter or grand daughters friends sew. It's getting to be a lost art at home. Like bread making, without the machine.

My love of a certain breed would be the German Shepard. I had one that was a pussy cat, but was very protective of me. When Marvin went bowling he bowled the last shift and if I was asleep my G.S. wouldn't let him in the house till I said it was OK.When my grand daughter was born and learnng to walk my G.s. would lay down and she would grab the hair on his back and would stand up very slow and walk very careful. My dog is the one that taught her to walk.

We have had walley a few times and we wraped it in foil and laid it in coals if I remember right I did like it. We have some around here but not at all the lakes. So why no more that once a month? Murcury? I think that's more in shell fish isn't it? Tuna- I once had fresh tuna on the grill- yummy.

We live in a small town with one grocery store- well up till last month our new Wal-Mart opened. So now we're a big town- one family grocery store, and now Wal-Mart, one theater, 3 places to eat + our fast food joints, about 6 church and six beer joints. Well at least there isn't more beer than religion.

I ran a service departmen for Sears- could talk more about washers, freezers and t.v. than most guys. Couldn't be around it for so many years with out some rubbing off.

Guess the gals aren't here tonight. Well time to turn in. Have a great night.

Donna

Good morning All! Sorry, I was watching "Walk The Line" last night, since I had the remote all to myself, so I didn't get online. Too bad, because I also have an interest in sports, pets (though I only have tropical fish...lol) and sewing!

I love the Bflo Bills, Sabres and our local ball team, the Bisons. Can walk to the ice arena and baseball stadium easily form our home!

My brother is a veterinarian, and we were raised with hunting dogs and nearby farm animals, so I love 'em. Just don't own one because we live in a townhouse with no yard to speak of, and we're both out of the house more than in! That guy should be hung for his involvement in dog fighting! It's a problem in some less than nice neighborhoods here too, unfortunately.

My dad and brother are avid fishermen, just came back from 2 weeks in Alaska! Hope they sent back some salmon! I've eaten all manor of fresh and salt water fish. My granny, who was also a seamstress, owned a tavern when I was a girl and served "fish & chips" that I can still recall the taste of! She taught me to cook and sew!

The good news is, I am down an unbelievable 18 lbs since 7/31! I feel GOOD about eating better, exercising and sharing with all of you!

I can talk sewing! Not so good at fish though.

kansasgal- We have mostly perch and lake trout around here. and I know what you mean by getting names mixed up. I think it is part of being a parent. I call my kids by the wrong name all the time. Once I called my daughter by the dogs name (oops, did not go over so well with her. Ha! ha!)

I found a good deal on a treadmill for my daughter yesterday so I picked that up and took it over to her house. I also got a new computer yesterday so spent some time setting that up.

Welcome levavelgem-Just us ladies here too. I guess if you want to talk to the guys you will have to start your own forum.

Kris, oh kris where are you? Sounds like you have a really nice guy there. I fix different meals all the time around here. Sometimes I fix the same but cook it different for me if you know what I mean.

Clwhit where are you? I am missing my twin. I know you are lurking out there somewhere. lol!

Lora

Kris- I haven't watch a movie forever. And as far as going to a show, I've been once sense "Porky 1" was on. Now that's been a few years. I use to watch t.v. but 2 yrs ago I bought a used computer at a garage sale for $25.00 -really didn't want it but the gals said oh you'll love the games. So I brought it home, had the grand kids come show me how to turn it on-- and the rest is history. Somesdays I'm on it 8-10 hrs aday.
To get to our nearest ball field is 120 miles and it's the Kansas City Royals and football the K.C. Chiefs. Baseball that's my sport- well and gambling. haha Again that in K.C. or Topeka which is also 120 miles. Can't walk to anything here, there's nothing to walk to.

I agree the sucker should be hung. And the ones that have the cock fights the same way, Still there isn't much difference than coon hunting, poor things ran till they are treeded and then clubed out of the tree and the dogs kill them. Back in my younger days I use to hunt and seen nothing wrong with coon hunting then as I got older I guess I got soft hearted.I'd love to be able to afford to go to Alaska on a fishing trip, but we live on social security and like dummies we never saved all that much for "old age"- guess we thought we would be young forever. haha

Your doing great- getting your "winter fat" off. I have dropped 5 but I yo-yo up down then and I've been doing that for ever again. But I will get it off and keep it off.

Lori- our lakes are more like over grown mud puddles. Nothing big but we do have a lot of fun, fishing, boating, and just kicking back and relaxing. It's been so hot here the last few weeks we haven't even got to the lake. Our A,C, in it quit and they ordered a part and still not here. It's been around 100 ith 100% humidity- that's a killer.
What kind of puter did you get? I bought a Dell a few months ago, oh and by the way my $25.00 old I.B.M. is still kicking. We use it for games. I don't play many but my hubby does. He also like the poker rooms.

CLWHIT and MEL where are you?????Think we should go look for them? Maybe they had something to do like have a good time shopping, fishing, gambling,or just reading a good book.
I think I'm going to be gone this week-end, most ofthe time but I'll check in. hope I can say" I lost weight" oh well I can dream can't I?

Donna

OK kansasgal you brought back a memory for me. The one time I went coon hunting the guy I was with fell out of a tree and broke his leg. It was a long-g-g-g-g time ago. Ha! ha!

I bought a Dell computer too it is a notebook and I just spent 3 hours on the phone trying to resolve a issue with the wireless set up. First talked to Dell and they sent me to the Linksys the router provider and then back to Dell. Dell connected to my computer and took it over and fixed the problem. ( keep your fingers crossed ) I had a HP before this.

If you ever get a chance to go to Alaska Go. We went on a cruise there last year and loved it. It is soooooo beautiful. This year ( April ) we are going to Hawaii. We are lucky enough to both be still working and hopefully we will stay in good health ( and I will lose enough weight to enjoy myself) Sorry that your not able to kansasgal.

Did I mention I don’t do sports either? I do know that I agree with you and that the guy should be hung for doing that to the dogs.

I guess everyone else had somewhere to be or something else to do! lol!

Lora

The trouble with Dell is half the time I can't understand their tecs. None are American - well anyway I called and told them they sent me no CD-- if my puter crashed I could not reboot. They said I didn't need one it would fix it's self. Well had a problem about a month after I had it and he ask if he could take control of my puter- that was ok with me-- and then it happened the black screen of death. He said ok now put in your back up cd-- excuse me-- well it took about 3 weeks to get the back up and get going again. GRRR! Was not happy.

Gosh Lori- you mean peopld have a life outside the puter room?

A friend of mine brought over a pie for our snacks and I took one tiny piece - I really didn't want it but didn't want to be rude. I did tell her please don't bring her great pies and cookies over, as I was not going to eat them again. I think she is trying to sabatage me.She is a good friend but you know the kind. Oh well we just have the middle age spread, enjoy life. Wish she wouldn't do that I don't want to hurt her feelings BUT__ I may have to sock her in the eye to get the point across. haha

A group of us are planning on going to Vegas durning the spring break- as several of them are teachers. Maybe I'll be able to do that but I'm sure Alaska is out of the question.

So what goodies did you eat today? I ate a lot of veggies, and rice, chicken and fish. Had fruit and of course my piece of pie. Do you make smoothies? I really like them. I do the berries, and yogurt. soo good.

Guess I'll head for bed, tomorrow is yard sales and I'm a junkie when it comes to that.Crazy I know but love it and have found a lot of things worth good money, but people are getting smarter and finding out the price of antiquates. One young gal several years ago had a big sale her Grandma passed and she sold 50 hummel figurines for $2.00 each. Wow wish I had been there. But the first lady there bought everyone of them.
Motivational moments.

Start the Journey

When you know that you can do it, you can do it. But how do you get to that point?

How do you know, without a doubt, that you can achieve what you set out to achieve? The only way to truly know is by doing it.

The first step of any journey is always taken on faith.

The next step, though, is taken with more certainty and confidence, knowing that the first step has succeeded.

So take that first step, small though as it may be. Once you've started moving, you'll know you can keep going.

Once you know you can do it, success is a matter of taking the time and making the effort.

Once you know you can do it, you'll have access to what you need to complete the journey.

The smallest, most seemingly insignificant success can in fact be quite significant: for it will start you on your way to the best you can imagine.

I know nothing about fish or fishing (I don't even much like eating them) they stink up the house too much when cooking.  So I only buy the frozen breaded ones in a box.  I hate to cook too.

Sewing well I try and enjoy it when it works out.

As far as health goes... As soon as I turned 50 (2yrs. ago) my body started to fall apart from my many years of abuse.  My feet, back, teeth... It was depressing.

Thanks to this site, I've been off pain killers now for a little more than a year.

Anyway enough about that

I've had a Dell for years but am thinking about getting  Mac.  I'm really sick buying Norton Anti Virus every year.  Any comments on the matter?

kansasgal, spread sheets?  I'm lucky if the bed gets made.

I got an inspirational message from the billboard in front of a local church on my walk this AM:

You cant complete the journey unless you begin taking steps!

How appropriate is THAT??!!

Have a great weekend everyone!

okay krismasself,

I'm going to get off this machine and get on my elliptical machine.

Have a good weekend yourself :)       logging off now.

Hi all, MsLile here.  I've been invited to check-out/join this group.  As someone wrote it is harder to lose weight as we get older.  I'm 67 and am a diabetic.  I have been struggling to get my health back after an illness which almost cost me my life.  I  have come a long ways since then, but it is a struggle.  Does anyone here take "alli", the newly released weightloss aide.  I have been using it for over a month and have lost over 12 lbs since then.  I also have hypothyroidism which makes it extremely hard to lose and very easy to gain, but the alli is working.  My doctor delightfully prescribed it for me and guaranteed that it would work.  I just have to make sure that I stay within 15 grms of fat per meal.  So far there have been no drastic side effects and I am pleased with the accomplishment.
Songchild- maybe you and I both need to go to the recipe box and find some very easy ,quick meals. I use to cook all the time, but as of the last couple of years sense I decided to eat healthy, I don't do much. I did the greas, fry, bake(cookie) and all the wrong things.that's great getting off the pain killers. How did you abuse your body, just wrong type eating? Me I drank and smokes- no wonder I had a heart attack.
I also use Norton but it cost only $10.00 with my new Dell- package deal. So far so good I guess. But something cleans my puter so good it wipes out my restore points. I hate that.

Kris your so right- the elliptical machine sure works your body more than this machine.I think if I spend more time on a machind I'd lose faster than setting here typing. How do you like yours? I have the gazell- it's pretty good, but would rather own a toning table- but there your taking big bucks. What about the new bean? Do you know anyone with that? I have a chat friend that has one and says it's a lot of fun.
Went out for dinner -it was my sisters birthday I had a salad, baked potato, chicken breast( took the skin off) and a piece of Texas toast.

Smlite- I am also 67 and diabetic. I was never really over weight until I became a diabetic- maybe just an excuse but anyway that was about 6 yrs ago. I was more fluffy than fat. Want to say what your life threating illness was?Maybe you would like to share-maybe not. Choice is yours. My daughter just bougt Alli today. She has tried many things but doesn't stay motivateed. I think that is the first and formost thing in weight loss. We do something-lose weight bet a little slack with our eating and wham- here comes the weight again, I think we need to nip it in the bud- treat a three  pound gain as a 3 degree temperature. We wouldn't let a 3 degree temp go with out thinking somethings wrong here, why do we just let these pounds slip in one and two at a time? Let one in and the next thing you know it's envited the whole darn neighborhood.

The Young Lion By Orison S. Marden

A young lion, as the fable runs, was one day playing alone in the forest while his mother slept.

As the different objects attracted his attention, he thought he would explore a bit and see what the great world beyond his home was like. Before he realized it, he had wandered so far that he could not find his way back.

He was lost.

Very much frightened, he ran frantically in every direction calling piteously for his mother, but no mother responded.

Weary with his wanderings, he did not know what to do, when a sheep, whose offspring had been taken from her, hearing his pitiful cries, made friends with the lost lion, and adopted him.

The sheep became very fond of her foundling, which in a short while grew so much larger than herself that at times she was almost afraid of it.

The foster mother and her adopted lived very happily together, until one day a magnificent lion appeared, sharply outlined against the sky, on the top of an opposite hill. He shook his tawny inane and uttered a terrific roar, which echoed through the hills.

The sheep mother stood trembling, paralyzed with fear. But the moment this strange sound reached his ears, the young lionlistened as though spellbound, and a strange feeling which he had never before experienced surged through his being until be was all a-quiver.

The lion's roar had touched a chord in his nature that had never before been touched. It aroused a new force within him which he had never felt before.

New desires, a strange new consciousness of power possessed him. A new nature stirred in him, and instinctively, without a thought of what he was doing, he answered the lion's call with a corresponding roar.

Trembling with mingled fear, surprise and bewilderment at the new powers aroused within him, the awakened animal gave his foster mother a pathetic glance, and then, with a tremendous leap, started toward the lion on the hill.

The lost lion had found himself.

Up to this he had gamboled around his sheep mother just as though he were a lamb developing into a sheep, never dreaming he could do anything that his companions could not do, or that he had any more strength than the ordinary sheep.

He never imagined that there was within him a power which would strike terror to the beasts of the jungle. He simply thought he was a sheep, and would run at the sight of a dog and tremb1e at the howl of a wolf.

Now he was amazed to see the dogs, the wolves, and other animals which formerly had so terrified him flee from him.

----------------

There is in every normal human being a Sleeping lion. It is just a question of arousing it, just a question of something happening that will awaken us, stir the depths of our being, and arouse the sleeping power within us.

Just as the young lion, after it had once discovered that it was a lion would never again be satisfied to live the life of a sheep, when we discover that we are more than mere clay, when we at last become Conscious that we are more than human, that we are gods in the making, we shall never again be satisfied to live the life of common clods of earth.

We shall feel a new sense of power welling up within us, a power which we never before dreamed we possessed, and never he quite the same again, never again he content with low-flying ideals, with a cheap success.

Ever after we will aspire. We will look up, struggle up and on to higher and ever higher planes.

Getting ready to go to chuch and wanted to come in a wish you all a blessed Sunday. May your aspirations be many and your troubles be few.

Donna
Ladies- I hope someday we will be feeling like the woman in the mirror

The Woman in the Mirror

Walking past the mirrored glass,
I take a timid peek,
I see a woman staring back,
I'm too choked up to speak.

The puffiness, at last, is gone,
The skin is pink and glowing,
The many pounds that melted off,
Finally, is showing.

When did she get so pretty?
When did God remove the grief ?
How did this miracle happen?
Who provided the relief ?

What a gift! A second chance!
I thank God every day,
For His grace in showing me,
There IS a better way.

I walk, I dance, I make love too,
My heart is filled with gladness,
I'm out of bondage, out of pain,
There is no room for sadness.

This woman in the mirror,
Smiles softly back at me,
She has good cause to be so pleased,
She's finally been set free.
