I'm new here and would like a older group to chat with. Maybe we can go down the trail to Skinnyville together.

I have had a few health problems but I am in great shape and healthy now and want to get this weight.

Could use any and all help. Would anyone care to join me in my new adventure?

Inhale positive-exhale negative.

This is some of my friends problems- and sometimes I think /I have problems- don't think so
87-yr old had hip replacement 3 weeks ago and it broke lose. Friday- second time hip replacement.
92 yr old -hurt her back- lives alone and great health. They put her on pain patches-messed up her heart.
66 yr old had a kidney stone- 1 inch diameter- they "blew it up" now he has many-many small ones to get rid of. He's not passing them so in the hospital for number 6 time in 4 months.Stint put in and removed and another one put in and removed-today- back to the hospital stint number 2 not working.

Okey- got to go move the tables out of the church so we can exercise -then have to put them back for bingo tonight. Don't understand- they wouldn't gamble for anything but play bingo- AHHH isn't that gambling? We have to take gifts tonight for bingo prises. Think I'll take lotto tickets. Okey that's the little devil popping out in me. haha

See you all later.
Need a little kick to get energy for your workouts?
They now claim coffee will energize and not dehydrate. So have a cup of coffee- get the energy flowing ,and get your exercise done. You'll feel better, look better, and  exercise is good for what ails you.

Water is still the drink of choice for me.
To find out how much you need to drink, weigh yourself before and after exercise ,working outside, playing in the midday heat-what ever makes you sweat. This will tell you how much water you're losing so you can determine how much fluid you need to compensate for the loss. For every kilogram (2.2 pounds) you lose through sweating, you'll need to drink 1 liter (33.8 ounces) to make up for it.
I don't plan on sweating that much but maybe you do.
Sweat and you sleep alone.

I've had a wonderfully busy weekend, and I see I've missed some wonderful inpsirational postings while away! I do believe that the Power of God has given me the power to do this, and set my inner woman free!

We've found a campground that we really like, a Bible conference RV park. We got ourselves on the waiting list...isn't great to know there's a "watiting list" to get into a Chrisitian campground??

I kept track of everything I ate, all of it unplanned, but tried to make good choices. And unless I've seriously under-estimated portions, I didn't do too terribly bad.

I've cut down on coffe simply by intaking more water. But I do still enjoy coffee and the little lift it can give.

Hi there -- new here! I've had a bit of success, so will share some thoughts today:

On my 50th birthday, my DAD gave me a copy of the South Beach Diet book. Cried....read the book....started implementing the changes....lost 30 pounds, and I've kept it off for a couple of years now. I'm going back on the strictest phase now to jump start another 'reduction'.

Some positive ways to change your thinking:

1) Think in terms of percentages, and strive to lose 10% of your total weight as your immediate goal. It's really hard to imagine losing 100 pounds when you're at 250, but losing 25 pounds (10% of 250) is a much more obtainable number. Doctors say losing even 10% of your body weight can help reduce many health risks. Go for 10% at a time...it really feels great when you achieve success!

2) Think in terms of 'substitution and replacement', not 'do without'. Sugar in the form of refined white sugar, refined starches like white bread, instant rice, white potatoes and white flour pasta are some of the biggest contributors to weight gain. Substitute another chemical for dextrose and sucrose. Substitute flavorful herbs for butter and salt. We threw out the white sugar and replaced it with Splenda that measures like sugar. We use it for everything. My husband is a really good chef, and has found he can use Splenda in everything except recipes that call for melting sugar to make caramel (few and far between, huh?) Replace white rice with brown or Basmati whole grain rice; replace white pasta with whole grain pasta (not 'multi-grain'...make sure the words 'whole grain' are the first ingredient).

3) Educate yourself, so you know what different foods actually DO to your metabolism. Be smarter than the fast food 'pushers'. If something is 'quick cooking' or 'instant', that means they took all the fiber and nutrition out so it would cook faster, and they added lots of sugar and salt to cover the bland taste. In your stomach, those refined starches convert INSTANTLY to sugar, which jumps up your insulin level, which makes you want more sugar, and so on. Try whole grain, nutty breads -- savor the flavor and textures, KNOWING you're outwitting the white flour refineries! Try different olive oils instead of butter or margarine -- teach your tongue to enjoy subtle, light flavors instead of that heavy slam of animal or exotic fat. READ THE LABELS:  if a serving has more sugar than fiber or protein, that tells you the food has little to offer you but empty calories -- the kind that hit your hips without giving you any real nutrition. Make your body work for those calories -- make it grind through the fiber and protein to get to the sugar inside.

It's all in your attitude, as I see a lot of you know from the ideas you have posted. I look at a doughnut or a baked white potato now, and just think 'poison', since those things make my insulin, blood pressure and heart rate go up, up, up. I satisfy my sweets and chocolate cravings with fat and sugar-free chocolate pudding and sugar-free gelatin. I eat sweet potatoes instead of white potatoes; grilled chicken with lots of herbs instead of chicken fried in salt and fat; grainy, nutty brown bread instead of sticky white bread.

...I could go on and on....best suggestion is to at least read the parts of the South Beach Diet book that talk about insulin, the Glycemic Index, and refined foods. It's a real eye opener! I'm not  trying to push this one book/diet. It just makes a lot of sense to me, and helped me to change my lifestyle and eating habits to lose that first 30 pounds.

Kansasgal-Keep posting those inspirations. I actually got to talk to someone at dell that I could understand the second time but I know what you mean about not being able to understand them. Sorry to hear about all your friends problems. That does make mine seem so small compared to theirs. I will say a prayer for them. "Counting my blessings"

Krismasself-Welcome back. glad you had a good weekend. Mine was so so. I ate some good and some bad. Today is a new day. I have found out that if I try to eat nine portions of fruit and vegetables, My milk and soy products that I usually don't have any need to eat the unhealthy foods. So I am concentrating on that today.

Welcome marks1009-I agree with the way you think. I have learned that many refined foods trigger hunger. I have gone to whole wheat and whole grain product and concentrate on eating healthy. I have to understand many of the glysemic foods because I am a diabetic

I could use a hug right now. I have been at school all day getting ready to go back. It is true that the kids are coming. HELP CLWHIT!

Lora

Here's a Hug for you, Lora {{{{for Lora}}}} Wink

Choices, choices...it's so much easier when I have a plan, and not relying on someone else's menu ideas Frown But, hey, the 4 yr old granddaughter made cupcakes (well, a bit of help from mommy, I'm sure)...that's prety special ain't it? But back to my plan today!!!

Hi been getting ready for a big dinner tonight. I'll try to get back on here when I get home.

Kris- that's great a camp ground for the flllowers. My grandkids worked at the summer camp a couple of summers. They really enjoyed, then they grew up and had to work full time like so many of us.

marks- Great advise- loved it and thanks for posting it here.I love anything motivational- well I just love posting and reading.

Lora- Wow someone that you could understand at Dell? I'm impressed.

Oops it's time to go. Church dinner. Why is it every time the church gets together we eat? Chuch can be dangerous to my weight. haha Isn't that the truth -thoes gals can whip up some great meal. I take fruit bowl most of the time. They think it's because I'm a health nut-- shhh don't tell- I'm lazy and that's easy to fix. No cooking.

BBL
Hey KansasGal --

Another easy one is 'AntePasto Salad' -- ingredients follow. Drain everything, cut into bite size pieces where needed, rinse anything with a strong vinegar marinade. Drizzle with olive oil so it's 1/3 of the way up the sides of the bowl (a clear plastic bowl does best here), and let soak for a couple of hours or overnight. Stir a few times to distribute the 'dressing'. Serve alone or with salad greens....the dressing is good over the greens alone, too. This assumes the jars and cans are about the same size -- the goal is to get about the same volume of each ingredient for a good mix of colors and flavors. Our COSTO warehouse store has almost all of the ingredients all the time. We keep this stuff in the pantry so we have an instant party dish. You can also take the jars/cans to the party, drain everything in the hostess' sink and make it on the spot!

1 can pitted black olives      &nb sp; 1 can green olives      1 can/jar sliced hearts of palm      1 can/jar roasted red peppers cut to bite size & rinsed    1 can/jar marinated artichoke hearts   1 can/jar marinated mushrooms rinsed

You can also add a jar of marinated baby ears of corn cut to bite size & rinsed, a couple of tablespoons of capers, and bite size mozzarella balls. Add extra olives to stretch it further for more people. Everybody likes something in this mix, and the best thing about this:   NO SUGAR!!!!
This is what I'm working on now. My goals.

1. HAVE A SPECIFIC GOAL.
Simply saying " I want to lose weight" is vague. Be specific: How many pounds do you want to lose? Visualize yourself after you've reached your goal, and use that image to help you stay strong and committed.

2. GET A PLAN.
Willpower doesn't work!!! To lose weight and keep it off, your strategy must include diet and exercise. Get rid of your expandable clothes, stay away from fast food, and stock healthy food at home.

3. IDENTIFY SMALL MEASUREABLE STEPS.
Implement steps that will fit your lifestyle, not somebody else's. Be sure to move toward a positive goal, not just away from being fat.

4. CREATE MEANINGFUL MONITORING.
If you have to report your progress to someone, you'll be more likely to stick with your plan. "Go public" with somebody who will support you.

5. CREATE A HEALTHY REALISTIC TIMELINE.
Where do you want to be in a year? Fit your goals to your calendar, and don't expect to see results overnight. If you change your lifestyle, you'll change your weight.
marks- that's what I'm doing jump start my metabolism. Think it has gotten a little sluggish laterly. The gain I received after my sugery is so stuborn. Like I said that's over and done with and I should have had it taken off months ago.I wouldn't accept that excuse if it were one of my family so why did I accept it on myself?

Lora- yes my friends do have problems now one of my friends have to decide if they should take her husband off of life support. He said he was ready to go a few weeks ago and now he's in a coma. He is a man of God and know he is going to a better place.

How is school doing? My grand daughter age 23- says she's to old to teach. So funny some of the kids have a crush on her and some thingks she's older than dirt.haha She is a sub teacher K-5.She works at a job in an office selling medical equiptment. They let her off anytime she needs to teach.

Marks- I'm trying your pasta salad tonight. Sounds yummy, If I'd been on the ball I could have taken it to our dinner last night. I need easy, quick fix recipes. I hate to cook.

Well looks like the thread is slow today. Wonder where people are-- maybe getting out and enjoying life? I've been to the gym this am-and going biking when it gets cooler this evening. Should have went early this am and the gym later.

I'm right here......a little slow but getting here.  I didn't get up until almost 11 am.  Husband went to the bread store and surprized me with some good ole pumpernickle bread, which is so good for a change.  I ate a "tomato" sandwich, no meat, just pumpernickle, a little mayo, and a tomato.  Brings back childhood memories.  Our water is off right now.  Called the water company and the have a big leak somewhere, so all the water is off all over town.  First thing I did was look for a water bill receit to see if I'd remembered to pay it.  found it and hubby put it in his billfold to keep for future reference.  They lost our payment a couple of months ago, and its happened to others, so sometimes they are not too efficient.  I've learned to hang-on to proofs of payment.  Looks like it is going to rain here, like we really need a lot more in the area.  Some places are waterlogged now.  Glad that we live on a mountain, at least water runs downhill and doesn't flood us.

Hey everyone I am here too!

mslile-I was eating a tomato and mayo sandwich too today. We have fresh tomatoes just starting in the garden. delicious!

School is going good spent some time up there this afternoon and things are going better. Thanks for the hugs Krismasself, I really need them.

I hope things are going well for all your friends kansasgal. It is difficult to know what the right decisions are sometimes and what to do. Many times our family are better off when we let them go. It is harder on us and sometimes it is a blessing.

Marks where are you?

Where is my twin? Clwhit? Did you abandon me?

And why doesn’t everyone post their picture?

Lora

Hey -- it's ANNA --

Got a call today...I have a job interview tomorrow!  YEAH!  Spent most of the day online researching "Governance, Risk Management and Compliance"  YUCK!  Tried to retire last November, and I've been SO BORED, so now I'm working with a recruiter to find something I want to do, close to home, making the right $$$$.  It's taking longer than I thought it would, so interview tomorrow is exciting. Hope the job will be too. Trying to lose weight to make a better impression in the job hunt!

I succumbed to the dreaded mashed potato monster tonight, though. Hubby made me one of his great hamburgers, and the pile of potatoes were calling my name. Worst thing I can eat, huh?

We need rain here...been in a drought for a couple of years, and no rain all July/August. My roses are pitiful now.

Take care all....I'll let you know how the interview goes!
OK- guess that doesn't work- I started a post and then I had to leave and I minimized it and came back later it was gone. Humm who ate my post?

Mslile- I make a pumpernickle mini sandwich finger food I love. Mix one pkg of Ph. cream cheese with a pkg of dry Italian salad dressing till soft, spread on Pump. bread and slice cucumber thin, place on bread  sprinkle lightly with celery seed and  -cut bread into small pieces maybe 1/4 of the sandwich.Works on ritz vegetable crackers also.

Lora- Well think we need to go find the lost ones? Have no idea why they ran off- I took a shower.

We picked our first batch of tomatoes July 1- and it was flooding at that time. Now the vines have dried, no leaves but the cherry ones are hundreds. Most volenteer from last year.

OK maybe I'll see if I can post a picture. Can we do a before and after one? Guess I'll see if I can find the directions. Can you tell me or point me in the right direction?

Hi Anna- so where you from? Did you see the Getting to know me post? Love for everyone to fill one out. Best of luck on the job interview tomorrow. We'll keep our fingers and toes crossed for you.

OOps BBL got to go but I'll finish later.

A little about myself.

My hubby and I have been married for 49 yrs. We were sweet heart in school and he was the only thing about school I liked. We married young and people said "it will never last" we were to young-well 49 yrs later we are still lasting.

I worked at Sears in the service department. I had a great crew of 3 service men. We covered a lot of ground for 3 tecs. Then in 90 the store closed and I retired. Tried that for 5 yrs and decised to get a job- became a hostess in our local college. Glorified baby setter was what I was.

My hubby and I took in "throw away kids" they were kids that was problem children of for what ever reason they didn't live at home. No- we were not foster parents we did this on our own. All together we took in almost 20 kids some for a few days and we had 3 that stayed for several yrs. We stopped doing that when my first grand daughter was born 23 yrs ago. Kris so a wedding is in the plans. I'm so happy for you.

Some where in time-- great movie. Christopher Reeves what a great actor, and who was the women both old and young? Can't remember who played with him. I also liked that show in fact I think I still have a video of it. When the motor home caught fire we lost a bunch of tapes and a lot of other thing, but the worse was my daughter home. The battery charge over heated and caught the motot home on fire and also their home. But they all got out alive so not to worry about.

I checked out the overeaters anonymous- looks interesting but I've got to many hours in this puter as is,

So where is everyone? Not sure I'll get back tonight bad storms expected to move in and then off with the puter.so may not get back till tomorrow or whn it quits blowing and lightning.

WATER
#1. 75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated. (Likely applies to half the world population.)

#2. In 37% of Americans, the thirst mechanism is so weak that it is mistaken for hunger.

#3. Even MILD dehydration will slow down one's metabolism as 3%.

#4. One glass of water will shut down midnight hunger pangs for almost 100% of the dieters studied in a University of Washington study.

#5. Lack of water, the #1 trigger of daytime fatigue.

#6. Preliminary research indicates that 8-10 glasses of water a day could significantly ease back and joint pain for up to 80% of sufferers.

#7. A mere 2% drop in body water can trigger fuzzy short-term memory, trouble with basic math, and difficulty focusing on
the computer screen or on a printed page.

#8. Drinking 5 glasses of water daily decreases the risk of colon cancer by 45%, plus it can slash the risk of breast cancer by 79%., and one is 50% less likely to develop
bladder cancer. Are you drinking the amount of water you should drink every day?
Are You a Croaker or A Leaper?
By Pamela Perry Blaine
We don't often think about the effect that our words have
upon others.  Our words do have power and everything that
we say has a positive or negative impact on the people
around us.   There is an old story that is told about an army* of frogs
that went hopping through the forest one day when two of
the frogs suddenly fell into a deep pit.    All of the other frogs gathered around the hole to look
down on their two fallen comrades.  They all began to sadly
shake their heads and to croak out dismal warnings.

"It's too deep!" croaked one frog.  Another frog croaked
that there was no way that they would ever be able to get
out of that pit alive.   The two fallen frogs began to continuously jump as they tried
to get out of the pit, but the frogs that were watching kept
croaking louder at them that they might as well stop because
they were as good as dead and just wasting their time.     One of the two frogs finally gave up and heeded the pessimistic
advice of the frogs at the top.  He quit leaping and literally
"croaked" and died.   The other frog just kept right on jumping and leaping harder
than ever in spite of all the loud croaks of disapproval from
the frogs around the top of the hole. They kept croaking shouts
at him to quit jumping and save himself from all the pain and
suffering he was incurring as he leaped and fell back down to
the bottom of the pit over and over again.

Finally, he jumped even harder than ever and to the surprise of
all the other frogs he leaped right out of the deep pit.    The other frogs asked him, "Why did you keep leaping even though
we croaked and yelled at you to stop?"  It was then that the frog
explained to them that he was deaf and he had thought they were
cheering for him and shouting  words of encouragement to him the
entire time!

A little encouragement can go a long way and as Babe Ruth once
said, "It's hard to beat a person who never gives up."   Our words do have the power to hurt or to heal.  What kind of
frog are you?  Are you a croaker or a leaper?
Job interview went well...went out to lunch afterward and ATE TOO MUCH while yacking with my friends. Will hear next week if I get a second interview. Thanks for the good thoughts, y'all!

Sore throat & feeling cruddy today -- going back to bed now. Have a good day all, and drink LOTS of water like your Momma Donna said!  :-)
