Let's Geturdone- over 50 +
I have had a few health problems but I am in great shape and healthy now and want to get this weight.
Could use any and all help. Would anyone care to join me in my new adventure?
Hey, all
I made it back to the computer. And spent a lot of time just clearing out junk mail and other assorted collected stuff. My backside couldn't take more sitting.
Boy, eating when tired must be a seasonal thing. All I think about sometimes is my next meal. Or next snack. And now that the weather has turned to fall and soon to be winter, those thoughts are focused on warm, comfort foods. What is it with food that so captivates some of us?
Exercise for me has been a hard thing to keep doing. Well, nothing to do but keep on keeping on, I guess. Like my friend used to say, "You don't have to like it; you just have to do it". And I need to remember my motivators: overall health; better-fitting clothes; old age ain't for sissies!
I may not check in often but I'm staying with this group.
Marta
Hi Marta,
We're here whenever you get here. We're all in the same boat, a little sluggish with our 'get healthy' plan. Maybe that's why not too many postings....
I am trying to get a couple of walking buddies. Maybe there will that will help with motivation.
Marie
Hi gals-- Well I'm back. You have always heard "what can go bad does"? Kind of been that way here. Nothing real bad just computer trouble then down for 10 days with some sort of crud. I haven't been out of the house and I'm going stirr crazy. I get out run to get meds and right back home. I got out and went to church this AM-- was there about 15 minutes and got to caughing so bad I had to leave.
Then of couse the 2 weeks with no puter. Well anyway I'm back. I have up the weight while I was sick. All I could go for awhile was ice cream and cereal. Couldn't think about meat or veggies and NO exercise. All in all I guess I'm getting on the mend -- about time.
Need to go back and see what everyone has been doing but think I'll just go to bed and plan on being here tomorrow.
Donna
Hi Donna,
Sure sorry that you have had the crud :( It is no fun to have a cough like that. When I get that way, the only thing that stops it is codeine cough medicine from the Dr. Hopefully you'll stay on the mend.
It is the beginning of fog season here - we have to leave extra time for the morning commute. We are planning to stay home for Thanksgiving so I will be able to avoid the worst of the temptations that day.
I hope everyone is hanging in there and getting in the proper mindset to take off weight. I did better this week. I am getting used to having less calories without getting cranky.
Alice
Alice I need a new mind set. I have gained while I've had this crud and no exercise. It's been 3 weeks that I have done anything right. I feel like a failure. I know don't get down on myself but it's so easy to reach for-- eat it-- and then feel awful Then it the questioning to self. Why did you eat that. It only takes a few BLT-- bite-lick-taste to really pack on the pounds.
I need to get ready for Thanksgiving and I dread the meals we will be having.Last year I did fine but I wasn't having the craving I am now. well noone can do it for me-- it's either do-or get fatter. The choice is mine and mine alone. In case I don't get back here --you have a great Thanksgiving.
Hello All,
Happy Thanksgiving!
I'm doing great with exercise and grazing. Now I have to fine tune my meals. During my little hiatus I gained 12 lbs. Ouch, that hurts! Time to get serious.
Donna, See we're all in the same boat. The most important thing is that you get over this crud. Feel better. And in no time you'll get the food and exercise thing worked out. I know it sounds like AA but 'one thing at a time'!
Good work, Alice, on a better week!
Be healthy!
Marie
Happy Thanksgiving, Marie, Donna and everyone! Our turkey is in the oven and we are making some roasted veggies too. I'll be looking for many low-cal recipes for left over turkey
.
I am hoping to get my eating plan for next week written down today. That's the only way I can control my calories. But I hate it when I run out of the house in the morning and leave some of my planned items at home.
Alice
Well I did fair with the eating today. Not 100% proud of myself, but not too bad. Just hope I get to feeling better and can get to exercising. This caugh-- everythime I start I get to caughing so hard. I have had this several times over my adult life but only twice sense I quit smoking 8 yrs ag. It always hangs on for over a month.
Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving and noone did too bad at watching what they ate. Monday I start back exercising as much as I can and back to the journaling. I think that help. At least I can see where I go wrong.
God Bless you all.
Donna
Hey Everybody!
Thought I'd fallen in a hole? Well, in a way I had -- a hole of more to do than time to do it in!
The new house is finished, we're 3/4 moved and loving it. And that, in a nutshell, is why I haven't been around. My on-line time went kaput!
Consider me ignorant of all that's been happening; I'm starting fresh, since there is no way I can go back and catch up.
Diet wise, I've not been. Period. Probably have gained weight. BUT. I'm back on as of yesterday. This time, I sincerely hope, to keep going.
Gosh, I've missed you folks!
its good to see everyone is starting to come back unfortunately most of us seem to be in the same boat...that only goes to say support groups help...today is the first day of my new attempt to clean up my bad habits..gained about 13 pounds since i was here last.... back to the tread mill and my husband and i are going to start going to the pool at one of the hotels in town...its very small but has a hot tub to go with it, that should help the creaky joints...going to get busy today and get a few things together for a craft sale next weekend...winter has been pretty mild so far and just a inch of snow and the lowest the temp has been is -5...all in all life is pretty good
Hello Out There!!!!! Anyone around??
As I just wrote in an email, I'm OK 60% of the time. Trying to make that 80%. Hope everyone is doing OK.
Marie
Hey, mcs1229! Long time no "see!"
I hope that when you say you are doing 60% ok, you mean with your weight goals, not with life in general. Either way, here's to making it to 80% -- and beyond!
I've been going through heavy emotional stuff. My weight management went out the window a long time ago. But, as alex recently reminded me [waves] it is almost a year since I first surfaced here. Just 1.5 months off. So, new goal: Be ready to get back on the bandwagon and seriously address my weight by my anniversary.
And you all will help me. won't you?
[knock, knock. "Is this mike on?" knock, knock]
Hi gals- I too have been missing in action. Been a long time sense I’ve been here. First my puter, then I was down, and then started working part time, now I’m setting with a dying friend. I have been with her for 7 weeks now. I think each breath will be her last. The Dr. called her daughter yesterday and said call everyone home, they couldn’t wake her. Well a few hours later her eyes opened and she tried to talk, she is really to week to speak.
Ok I need to get the motivation going again. I didn’t know much the last time I was here and what I knew I’ve forgotten. So it’s back to step one again. Any good advice on eating? My exercise is great but not so good on the eating part.
Carol I hope some of the rest of the group shows up. I really have missed you all. I’m glad the house in now completed and you’re ready to get back with us. Where is it you’re living now?
Marie- I would settle right now for 60%. I have gained about 10 pounds in the last few months. I think we need to show up here every day or so with a barrel of ambition, determination and motivation. Do you know how hard it will be to get through the Christmas feeding frenzy? Oh my—that is scary.
Jenika- We had hail, sleet, rain, fog and thunder and lightning and then the sky opened and here came the snow. It is almost melted now but they say we have a ice storm heading this direction. I’d rather have snow than ice. There are so many accidents in the ice- not only cars but people falling and breaking bones. I don’t care for snow that much either but it is better than ice.
You bet we’ll help you celebrate your anniversary with a new weight loss. We need a challenge. Maybe eat no junk till Christmas. I think one day maybe won’t hurt us too much. I had some Nutra System mac and cheese tonight—oh my- I never had anything that I had to force it down with water every bite. Well at least I did get a nice amount of water intake today.
I think I’ll start my journal again of my eating. I got the Wii and the Wii fit and I love it. It keeps track of your weight and your exercise time. I have been working out on it 45-60 minutes a day, then doing the Red for 20-30 minutes so I think that covers my exercise—now for the eating. HELP!
Donna
Looks like everyone is busy.Have a Merry Christmas and hope you all are staying warm. I'll check in tomorrow to see if anyone is around.
Hi Donna and everyone! Donna, I'm usually not much help with eating because that is my weak area too. When faced with high calorie food that we know we are not going to refuse, my best advice is Everything in Moderation. Some days I skip my regular meals if I have been snacking on bad stuff, and I just let the bad food be my calorie intake for the day. There's always tomorrow for healthy eating.
Today I hiked a trail called the Whiskey Flats Trail with two friends. It is 14 miles long and usually dry in nice winter weather. Unfortunately the snow levels left by the last storm were unusually low. I ended up walking over half the distance in snow that was 2 to 8 inches deep, in my regular running shoes! We lost the trail a few times because of the snow covering it, and spent a lot of time bushwhacking around trying to find it. We finally finished at 4:45, just before dark. I am REALLY tired and looking forward to my rest day tomorrow!
Alice
Donna -- can you be a bit more specific about the help you need?
Are you talking about how to avoid all the holiday food, particularly the calorie-laden extras? Or are you talking about eating at home on a daily basis?
The advice I'd make would vary, depending on which it is.
???
Gals my motivation went out the window. The only thing I was doing right was exercising. I went back and figured my calories intake and I was almost 3,000-- way over my 2.000 and I'm sure somedays were worse. Anyway I am cutting back and I have not eaten any sweets, bread or junk but some homemade trail mix and I'm down 4 pounds in the last 10 days. I guess just writting everything down made me think-- wow-- I really overdid.
I'm going to start doing my journal also again. I have also drank more hot tea and water, laying off the diet pop for awhile. I drink diet rite-- no calories or sugar but just another thing I want to control. I don't need it so I should drink stuff that helps not just fills my tummy.
I guess 2,000 would be about right for me. Going to try to keep it at that and then go to 1,500-- what you all think? I am 5-5 and weight 174 now. My motivation is picking up now. I was 178 just 10 days ago.
I totally relate, Donna! 2000 calories sounds like a good starting point. You may not lose very fast, but you'll get used to eating less again, and then make another reduction to 1500. That's my problem - 1500 or 1600 calories seems like nothing. I always want more. But I know it's just habit, because I had a long period of time where 1500 seemed like plenty.
Today I went to a service for a friend who died last week in a tragic car accident. He took one too many chances hurrying to work on a narrow curvy road, lost control and went head-on into a giant boulder. For the sake of a few minutes, he lost the entire rest of his life at age 43. He was also very heavy, around 300 pounds, and I know that his weight affected the outcome. Sometimes people in good shape have a much better chance to survive such an accident. He lived for about 90 minutes after he arrived at the hospital, but ultimately they couldn't save him.
Alice
Alice- I am trying first to just think of healthy living and not the scales and weight. Every time I get on the scales and have not lost anything I get upset. So maybe my best bet is not to weigh but every couple of weeks or even a month. I think there is a way in the Wii that I can bypass the weight. I think I’ll just work on healthy eating for awhile – what you think? Do you weigh often I hate to be a slave to the scales I’m afraid I’ll get mad and throw them out the window. Haha
I am so sorry to hear about your friend. Yes sometimes when we get in a hurry we take foolish chances. I totally agree that our weight can affects so many things in our life. I still say the fork kills more people than any other weapon.
So do you have big plans for Christmas? We are going to my granddaughters for dinner. We have several friends that have no family here so they are also coming over. I think there will be about 15-18 of us. We do the exchange Christmas Eve, just the family.
I wrote a piece about being busy in my journal if you would like to read it.
Well it’s getting late so if I don’t get back by Thursday you and yours have a safe, memory building Christmas.
Donna
I hope you all had a very Merry Christmas. I got a message from Penny and she'll be here around the first of the year. She is ready to restart also. Am I ready for a new start-- you bet I am.
Donna

It is not a fact that garlic helps with weight loss; no studies have looked at garlic and weight loss in humans. One small study on... Read more
