From a Good Housekeeping magazine, they were called Keralan Crab Cakes. I made them GF. The original recipe calls for 1/2 c unswetened shredded coconut.

Recipe Ingredients for GF Crab Cakes

1 lb lump crabmeat
1 c corn, frozen or canned
1 c chopped fresh chives
1/2 c shredded carrot
1/2 c finely chopped celery
1/2 c GF corn meal
1/2 c GF All Purpose flour
1 egg
1 T lemon juice
1/2 c milk
1 c canola oil

Recipe Directions for GF Crab Cakes

  1. In a large bowl, combine crabmeat, corn, chives, carrot, celery, chiles, corn meal, flour, and 3/4 tsp salt.

  2. Add egg, lemon juice, and 1/3 cup milk.

  3. Mix well, adding additional milk if necessary until the mixture holds together.

  4. Shape crab mixture by packed 1/3 cup into 12 patties about 2 1/2" in diameter and about 1" thick.

  5. Heat oil in deep 12-inch skillet on medium until hot.

  6. Add the crab cakes and cook 6-8 minutes or until browned on both sides, turning once.

  7. Transfer onto paper-towel-lined cookie sheet to drain and keep warm in a 200 degree oven if necessary.

  8. Serve with chutney.

  9. The magazine listed each at 250 calories, 20 g protein, 20 g carb, 10 g total fat, 3 g saturated fat, 2 g fiber, 113 mg cholesterol, 560 mg sodium. But there's wasn't GF.
