That girl on the Gordmans commercial

Quote  |  Reply
Has anyone seen that Gordmans commercial advertising back-to-school clothes?  The model looks like she is about to break in half!  Her arms look like twigs, and you can see her hip bones about to break through her skin in part of it.

How can anyone possibly think that is attractive?  The girl would be pretty if she'd gain about 10 pounds.

Yeah I've seen this commercial too. When she's walking down the street in the cut off shirt, it looks like her hip bones are gonna pop through her skin
Nupe. Even googled it to see if I could bring it up. But, no luck.

 Ooh well.

You can see it there. I think that is the video bernasha is talking about?
eWwW.  that is really gross.  she should have kept some of that pizza.
Wow.  And she's in the juniors section because she's a junior?
Wow!  I don't even know what to say.  I almost want to write a letter to the company.  Would I be wrong to say that promoting that body type is dangerous and irresponsible?  The camera usually adds 10 lbs.  I can't imagine what she looks like in real life.
oh man gross.

I seriously hope she is just naturally that thin.  It kinda looks like she is wearing the lowest size available and it's FALLING OFF of her.

First of all...why do they have grown women advertising for back to school clothes? I don't think we have gordmans (I've never seen it anyways) - but is it supposed to be a kids store? Or for adults too? Somehow I guess I thought that the whole back to school shopping spree thing went out once you hit that age...guess not....

Secondly, none of what she is wearing looks appropriate to wear to school. So it seems to me that they are definately just trying to convince young girls that they need to be going for "thin" and "revealing" as what is "in" this season to wear to school.

Thirdly...what's with the not-so-subtle messages throughout this commercial? "Fitting in" when you want to? Standing out when you don't (in this shot she's standing as sort of the leader of the trio)? Don't eat the pizza, instead drink coffee, and be so thin that the mannequins envy you? Always flit around from friend to friend, having many friends, but they don't last till the next shot? What's up with that? Anyone else find this super disturbing, especially as a back-to-school commercial?

Um...ew.

Watching her hip bones as she walked creeped me out.
seriously...what was the point of that ad??  she just seemed so flaky!

yeah. that sucks. she is way too skinny! i wish she would eat a burrito.
mmm burrito....
cant see that commerical...

but i noticed this too!

i was watching i think it was a Kohl's dept store ad...

and i was thinking...they never made people this thin before in that age group 10 years ago. clothing is way more slutty too.

i have had to tell so many teens/people at random "psst..hey your butt in hanging out"
because they didnt know how to wear short stuff.
they get totally embarassed but are glad i told them.

but yeh...they really are pushing that super thin thing.
its really disturbing as puberty makes you fat before your grow.
not a good feeling to deal with when that crap is being shoved in your face at that age.

Curses:

I remember when I was in college (just last year :P) those terry-cloth looking mini-skirts were popular. Some poor girl was wearing one that was too short, and when a gust of wind came by *WHOOSH* up it went. Hopefully she will think twice before buying something like that just because it's popular. Or wear shorts underneath.

Too bad she had to learn the hard way. :\

Anyway, my point being, everything seems to be getting shorter and smaller. What gives? What happened to looking classy?
To spite her I'm eating a Naan Bread Pizza tonight. Well not the whole thing, but I'll eat it for her. Because she has clearly sufferd for her 'image' of a 'child'.

Makes me want to be sick. Thank god I havent seen any of these commercials in Canada. I would rally up and burn down the HO.

This is why we have 13 year olds on this site crying because they are 89 lbs.

pfft.

in my opinion, she doesn't look too thin at all, she looks healthy. everything is well proportioned on her body, her arms seem to indicate that she IS naturally that thin.

i don't understand why the idea to complain to the company has been mentioned..girls like this are NOT the reason we have '13 year olds on this site crying because they are 89 lbs', there could be a million reasons they're on here, not just because there's a skinny girl on a commercial!

i think this post was really mean, i wouldn't go around saying how ugly and disgusting a really fat woman looked in a commercial, and it seems like you're under the impression that just because people are skinny that you're allowed to make a judgement on them.

I thought about writing a letter too..

I even had a bunch of guys watch it (guys who tend to like the stereotypical "hot girl"), and even they said it was disgusting!
yeah that was pretty gross, my girlfriend is a model but thank god she isnt that skinny. Certain modeling industries have started putting in place regulations that make sure models need to be a certain age and a certain BMI (about 18) which is really good, but it will be a while before it's a world wide thing.

The thing is, people will do anything to make LOTS of money, and remember there are people out there that do FAR WORSE things than starve themselves to make themselves rich.

It seems everyone in this community is smart though, which is good :D
I don't think this post was meant to be mean. I think it was to make a point that there is this unrealistic body image that the media portrays that specifically is aimed towards young girls. Stick-thin girls are in the media EVERWHERE, not just this commerical. It creates a distorted perception of body image in the minds of many. Needs to be talked about somewhere.
I saw this commerical and thought the exact same thing!  She actually doesn't look too bad when she is wearing clothes that cover her hip bones, but there is one shot with very low riding jeans and her hip bones are poking out pretty bad.  I have a 9 year old daughter and I'm really scared about the images that are being constantly thrown at her.
