This girl has more courage than I ever could!
So, there's a new contender to the Miss UK title, 17 year old Chloe who is anything but a size zero model. She's out there to tell people to be happy with their bodies, which I think is a good message overall. Now, I think it takes a lot of self-esteem and courage to put yourself out there for the media to devour when you know that anything over an American size 0 is considered a cow. But I feel terrible for her because of all the horrible comments people are making to her below.
The question addressed by these "commentators" (who should know better than to post these things when someone has put themselves out there) is:
Has there been too much alteration to the idea of "curvy" versus "overweight"?
What do you guys think?

Reason: Moved from Weight Loss to The Lounge forum
i don't know how it works in the uk, but in the us, for a woman to be competitive in the modeling industry (which i know a pageant isn't), she either has to be very thin, or markedly overweight (size 12, w/ a slight amt of fluff, or a slim 14). a "regular" sized woman (size 8,10) doesn't stand a chance.
as for the op's orginal question, curvy DOES NOT equate to overweight. curvy means you have curves--a waist, breasts, hips--regardless of how much you weigh. and you can sure as hell be fat and curveless.
and that second article was just unconsionably mean. why not set the girl on fire?

That's not actually answering my question. My question was: Has there been too much alteration to the idea of "curvy" versus "overweight"? NOT:Are curvy and overweight the same?
In my opinion, the word "curvy" is too loosely applied when describing a woman.
i.e. Beyonce = curvy
"In my opinion, the word "curvy" is too loosely applied when describing a woman."
I thought curvy was a euphemism for being fat obese or on the high end of having a normal bmi , but now its taken on this positive connotation of being attractive, beautiful and healthy, I dont know how people made the connection with being obese or overweight with health and beauty,
And I would call beyonce thin anyway,

I personally like the new math of language this is promoting. I can't wait, perhaps I can start calling myself a "brad pitt lookalike?"
That would be 'brady'. As in, chiseled, strong and exuding a manly aroma.
Brady. I think I like that term :D
Curvy means feminine looking to me. You know, someone who actually has hips and a butt as opposed to jeans that are saggy in the butt with prominent hip-bones protruding...I think "Curvy" is far sexier than waif-thin and boyish looking. It doesn't have to mean "Obese". Why do people go to extremes in their definitions? The normal, HEALTHY female body does have more body fat than a man's.
Just to throw another cog into the "curvy" debate. ; )
There are definitely a few distinctly different meanings to "curvy". I generally think of it as having better defined hips and boobs - an hourglass shape. Of course, you also see it used as a descriptor for girls who are bigger in general, or as a euphemism for overweight. Fashion magazines and such tend to go by the latter definition.
I also agree that she doesn't look her stated weight. I'm almost that exact weight and height (in my pics I range from 170-180) and look quite different, even accounting for frame and muscle differences. I admire her confidence but think that if she really wants to stand up as a healthy and realistic alternative to those rail thin models, she'd do better with a little more muscle tone and a few less pounds.
Wow, what a diference, you look quite healthy at that weight (I'm guessing you a decent ammount of muscle definition), a world of difference compared to Ms. Chloe.
You look good, and best of luck in your weightloss journey. And i've stated before I couldnt agree more with you about if she wants to stand up as a 'healthy' alternative, she should be promoting health.
Re OP: I believe the definition of curvy should be "hourglass", but I think as some have said its used as a euphemism for overweight. One of those 'politically correct' terms.
these politically correct things amaze me always (i am european and always very suprised what the american invent in terms of these terms:))

i might sound harsh btu i guess the skirt/scarf/pareo speaks for itself.
I think she is very very pretty
I think she is voluptuous and very pretty. More power to her. I hope she wins.
(Edit: Took out the snotty comment. Allowing for more assumptive comments about her being unhealthy)

~And at least she doesn't have to wait in line at the dorms in the loo for the other contestants to get rid of their dinner.
Now isn't this comment just as bad as calling Chloe fat? Why assume that these girls are unhealthy because they're thin?
That comment is ludacris, because these women are 'fit', they are bulimic? Some women work their ass off for their figure, eat right and exercise. And then you have Chloe, who 'lost it once, but is too lazy and comfort ate her way back'. And lets say one or two of them does throw their dinner up, how is that any worse then comfort eating? They are both terrible and unhealthy. You throw utter disrespected towards any of the girls who healthy got to their weight, and a few of them have some muscle mass, and look quite in shape, so I doubt they are throwing up all their nutrients at dinner 'waiting in line' as you say.
this is new how?
then i saw this article, with the body shot, and i was kind of caught by surprise.
she is WAYYYY over weight. Like not even lying. i doubt she's even a size 16, either way, if she really did eat healthy and excercise as she claims, then she would NOT look like that.
This is just as bad as the skinny models. She's huge. That's not healthy, either! I mean, great, she's comfortable with herself, but she's displaying a poor image to society as well. ...Must there be such extremes!? Haha.
